Very fast posts. Hard to keep up

Should've seen original Dungeoneering, we went at like twice this rate.

Now for me to fill out those details about myself:

Height: ~1.75cm

First: putting details about yourself out on the Internet is a bad idea in my book. Second, either you typo'd or holy crap you're short.

And Earth, that makes me glad I have parents that would understand if I was up late trying to fix my computer.

Also, yes, Rocco, destroying an obnoxious kid's things is a great! way to teach them not to be sulky and stupid whenever they don't get what they want.

That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm not saying that it's the go-to method for child discipline, but in some situations it is viable (such as with an obnoxious spoiled brat (which I am in no way implying you are)).

True, it works when they aren't sulky in the first place.. But then they go 'the world hates me, attack everything'. Or, some of the time, at least..

Yup, I'm short. Though I'm only the 4th shortest in my class, 3rd shortest when not counting the only girl. The shortest one's actually one head-lenght shorter than me.

And posting details about my general appearance would be the least of my worries, my avatar is my school picture and you know my full name.

You mean there are other people shorter than 1.75 cm? I have pencils that are taller than you!

(I'm just joking around :P)

I know, "normal" height is between 1.80 and 1.90.

I think you missed the joke.

On a note to nex, there are several good systems that could be used to run the type of game you seem to be interested in (Shadow run/ dresden files RPG [to a certain degree]/ GURPS cyberpunk) Pm me for details about them.

Another system that you could use as an inspiration would be D20 Modern, which is more or less D&D 3.X with modern tech and that is mostly compatible with 3.5 (largest issue is that the class systems are very different, and D20 modern got rid of actual currency and instead uses Wealth rolls to determine if you can get items). Pretty much all of the content for D20 Modern is freely accessable online as a part of the OGL MSRD: Modern System Reference Document

(Note that I have not actually played it, I just know about its existance)

From what I have heard the World of Darkness system has an add on/setting that would work well as well. Obviously if you want to run a game any system is unnecessary (but the ready made rules makes things a fair bit easier). That being said, I think d20 modern is the only system listed that has a srd.

Well I'm chipping away at it, making a concrete background and such. I'm trying to decide the leveling system, and whether Feats and Ability Scores of some sort should come into play. There's also the question of what the 'magic' should be, I'm thinking of several sorts that I might very well combine in the end. For once, Artix Entertainment might have provided a sort of positive inspiration (of course, they only provided recent exposure, the idea itself is long-standing).

Had varsity tennis practice at 7AM in the morning at an indoor court because the outdoor ones are snowed in. My body was definitely NOT designed to be active right after I wake up.

Elves are actually very slow according to some settings. Less initiative due to longer lifespan and all.

Also, Nex, you could always look into Dark Heresy or Rogue Trader. Designed for 40k, but you could splice your own game into it using the basic system. Both have heavy emphasis on characters not being "Big damn heroes" and actually dying very quickly if they try to take on something which is too much to handle.

Yeah...Characters dying, unless it doesn't really mean anything, doesn't bode well with the Tavern...

Since there is a strong tendency to ignore the warning signs and complain that 'I could'a taken them' when the Mod says that you crawl away with your last good finger, instead of springing up on your broken legs, picking up the gun from the molten magma and firing a pistol 500 meters, passing through a tiny hole with a series of randomly swing blades and a room full of hostages, to press a button that will deploy a health kit for you...

Or the ever popular 'What I do is use my face as a weapon.'

It is also extremely difficult trying to think of mundane, but challenging, encounters, persistently.

Also virtually everything is too much to handle...

[hide]

'There is a cave, do your explore it?'

'Er...No, I could easily expire from a small tap.'

'Oh come on, it will be boring if you don't do anything.'

'Boring! I picked up a newspaper, got a paper cut and had to spend two hours in ye olde hospital because I don't have first aid as a skill.'

'Yeah, but that was at level one, you are level five now.'

'...And you promise I won't die from tripping over a rock or something?'

'You have my word.'

'Ok...I enter the cave.'

'As you enter the cave you feel a thin web, like a spidersweb.'

'OMG RUN AWAY!!!!'

'You run away.'

'Is anything chasing me?'

'No.'

'I take up position at the mouth of the cave and wait for something to happen.'

'Nothing happens.'

'Ok...I examine the web.'

'You re-enter the cave and trip over the trip wire. You fall into a spiked pit and are impaled on the spikes.'

'What! NO! NO GATING! I WAS LOOKING AT THE WEB ON ME!'

'There wasn't any web on you.'

'"a thin web, like a spidersweb"'

'Yeah, it was a trip wire.'

'Am I dead?'

'Yes'

[/hide]

If death is reasonably likely then the game has to be rather restricted to prevent headbutting the spiky door, or getting knocked out, from occurring 'too' often.

Personally, SPECIAL (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck.), with the levels and perks system thrown in.

Lumps a lot of skills together and unifies the XP system so you aren't reliant on finding locked doors to level up your lock-picking level.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Good thing I never did get around to making my own game then. I wouldn't let it be a walk in the park. (It wouldn't be difficult either, just no, OMG I WIN [cabbage]) I am one of those people who believe in not everyone being so damn epic all the time. Maybe one person in the group at most.

The problem is....everyone wants to be that person. To be perfectly honest, sometimes, not being epic, can lead to some epic moments for your character. That is how I see it anyway.

Well, good news. The guy who sold me the computer, came and picked it up last night. Sooooo, I may be able to get something in the works after all. I was thinking that, I'll hold the sessions over IRC, and then, use my writing ability, craft a story to post here in the Tavern of the happenings of each session.

I think it would be a neat little project for me to hone my very rusty writing skills. I haven't written anything in months. And I am craving some storytelling. lol

unifies the XP system so you aren't reliant on finding locked doors to level up your lock-picking level.

Most system creators identified that flaw when creating their respective games.

It appear that tavern members are not most system creators.

What is this system you speak of??? I do not know of such things as "levels" or "XP". You speak a foreign language!!!

There are various advantages to an non-unified system...It means that you can get better at an individual skill far faster.

For example...If you happen to only really use a rifle and lockpicking, then you can level those skills up directly, rather than having the game nerf you for puring.

Inversely, it also prevents people from becoming really good at one skill and then using the massive/easy XP they get from that to level up all the other skills.

It also supports longer games, since most 'unified' games have some form of asymptote in overall level, at which point it becomes near impossible to level up.

In a non-competitive game, ie parties or single player, the second point is invalid, and the first point doesn't really factor, since few single player games nerf puring. And non-competitive games rarely last beyond a few months...so...

However, Tavern Competitiveness means that people nerf or people binge...And don't want to reach the celing in five minutes.

Ergo, a unified system is exploitable.

However, it takes a lot of strain off of the moderator, and given that Nex is dealing with a major concept, simplicity is preferable.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.
