Swiller2
I heard the term on an episode of Snuffbox last night so I had to Google it out of curiosity. To my surprise they sound kind of good. As an American I had never heard of these before. I love all the ingredients that go into them, so I plan on trying to make some of my own this week sometime. I was wondering if some of my fellow British Tifer's could give me some info./opinions on the Scotch Egg. Are they any good? How common a food are they? When are they usually eaten(special occasions or whenever)? Have you ever made them yourself? If so could you post any recipes or tips & tricks. I would really appreciate any feedback as I am super curious about this food. Thanks a bunch! :) Edit-First off thanks for all the replies and input from you guys! I tried to make a few and it did not go well. Asked on Reddit and got a few tips, will be trying again on Sunday. MonkeyChee
Are they any good? They're ok but I'm not much of a fan. I know some people who love them though. How common a food are they? Do you mean how often do you see people eating them/on sale etc? If so not hugely common but they're on sale in most supermarkets here as far as I know. When are they usually eaten(special occasions or whenever)? Only if lunch is a special occasion  But yeah just as a normal small snack type food I suppose. Have you ever made them yourself? If so could you post any recipes or tips & tricks. I've never made them.
Danqazmlp
They are lovely. I used to only eat the outside and leave the egg for some reason, but now I love the whole thing. They are a really common food here, you'l see them in even the smallest supermarket and probably even petrol stations. They are just a snack food though, like a sandwich or a packet of crisps, just something to eat for lunch. Sometimes you can have them with a salad or with cold food too. Want to be my friend? Boris5000
Are they any good? They are alright. You have to be in the mood for a Scotch egg. How common a food are they?Available in snackpacks in most supermarkets. When are they usually eaten(special occasions or whenever)?Normally eat them at picnics, large family gatherings. They really are a snack food. I don't think I have ever seen a "Gourmet Scotch Egg". Unless you count the ones in M&S, but you should always buy Percy Pigs if you ever end up in M&S. Have you ever made them yourself? No. Luck be a Lady
Will H
Are they any good? They're fairly good, I wouldn't consider them as anything special though. How common a food are they? Pretty common and availiable at plenty of supermarkets. When are they usually eaten(special occasions or whenever)? I've only really eaten them from buffet tables at parties, but I think a fair few people eat them as snacks. Have you ever made them yourself? Nope, I have no idea how to make them. Also, never underestimate the power of correctly prepared fish & chips. ~ W ~
Fat_Slug
Not that keen on the sausage meat unless it has chutney/pickle with it. But I tend to have it with a picnic kind of meal. Ginger_Warrior
If you don't cook the chips properly, they'll either be raw or they'll have a "burned" taste and they're really soggy. I don't like fish anyway, especially cod. As for scotch eggs? Disgusting... a meat 'n' 'tato pie please. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |

What is there to prepare incorrectly. You forgot love. But really, using the right type of oil and the cooking time is important, I've had chips that were orange that didn't taste very good because they used a weird oil, and somewhere else I've had cod that was encased in so much batter that eating it felt like a mining operation. It's not difficult to do it right, but I've seen lots of chippies still mess it up. ~ W ~

Good thing my local chippie did it perfectly, and I used to live 1/2 an hour away from whitby which supposedly does the best fish and chips, so I've never it badly cooked. OT. Scotch Eggs are amazing, my dad made them a few times and they were much nicer than store bought ones, then again most food is... :) Why can't the Big Bang be done by the hand of God?It could have, but it is next to impossible because it also could have been caused by the flying spaghetti monster, or one of the other infinite number of deity possibilities. Resistance
Scotch eggs vary GREATLY in quality. I have tried a lot of scotch eggs and there is a massive difference in recipes. The variation can be as much so as cake is.

It varies on oil temperature, to the starchiness of the chips (and whether they've been pre-fried to create its unique crisp fluffiness), to the saltiness of the batter, to whether they contain MSG or not, etc. It's a lot of things for consideration. On the topic of scotch eggs - it's an acquired taste really. I wouldn't say I crave them, but I wouldn't mind eating one. As others have said, the quality varies greatly on where you buy your produce.
