Ugh... Fender make unbelievably high quality guitars - You don't wonder why the best players play them?

Oh, and Newstead doesn't play Fender basses.

What is so special about the guitar other than it looks good and James Hetfield uses it?

It doesn't really have great specifications, it's the lowest end LTD you can buy. LTD guitars come in *50, *350, *400 and *1000. The * represents the model name (EX, M, MH).

Anything above the *400 series is pretty much a great playing guitar.

Arent Explorers really badly unbalanced. You should get a set of paper weights

You move one of the strap buttons to neck joint and it balances it out. Otherwise, yeah, they tend to nose-dive.

Yeah when I had my first explorer, I was thinking... "woah this thing is neck-heavy..." With time, it's fairly easy to get used to.

To the topic author..

If I were you and I were to get an explorer, I would avoid a bolt-on neck... don't be afraid to spend the extra money on a set neck, it's worth it.

If you don't care about that and it's just wild looks you want, try a Jackson Warrior instead, I thought it was more playable than an EX-50. A Warrior is more comfortable than something like an explorer or an ML.

Best guitar IMO is Les Paul.. shame about the price, but it sounds sooo nice.

The best bass hmmm... i do like basses from Wesley Guitars Ltd but i'm not sure...

Les Paul is just the model (hope that's the right word), you can get one for below 100$... - not a very good one, but a Les Paul nonetheless. It's the Gibson Les Pauls that tend to cost. But even then, if you get a studio version, it doesn't have to be excessively expensive.

I prefer Jackson to ESP. I haven't checked the current prices of ESP, but I have to say Jackson costs much.

But looks nice, ESP has good guitars too, especially if you play heavy metal, it should rock.
