So I am going to try farming...

Featured Replies

Haven't done farming in a long while and have only dabbled with it (hence my level) any advice? Thanks!

Herbs = money

Trees/fruit trees = xp

Balance the two.

Basically what the man above me says. I would however say it may be worth planting trees and fruit trees as much as possibly to begin with to reach the required farming level for the more profitable herbs. Check out the Mother Gaia in the AoW here in the forums.

Agreed. As a side note, I also grow limpwurt. I do it more for herblore, to avoid paying for them in the GE, but a one of my clan member also mention it's some type of profit (3 roots per patch. 5 patches total = 17640gp).

Marigold also profits flowerwise.

Forgot to mention, aside from marigolds being profitable flowerwise, if you want you can grow the crops you want to use in supercompost or to pay the farmers to watch your trees. For you, you'll be growing sweetcorn and tomatoes for your oak and apple trees. Sweetcorn is actually cheap to buy thou.

Also check out quests with farming xp.

Excellent advice. A lot of people get turned off by having to grow really low XP crops and having to expend a large amount of effort for little gain. Doing as many quests as possible that grant farming XP early on will help you get over that hump.

I really suggest you check the Farming guide in the Archive of Wisdom it has excellent advice and it really helped me when I started farming.

Quests alone will get you from 1-34 farming. At that point toadflax and ranarr are your best herbs to farm. That can be done every hour and a half. Trees can be done once or twice a day depending on when you planted (16 hour grow time iirc)

Thanks so much guys, I wasn't on runescape much yesterday (Nor will I be today) so I will start to get down and form properly tomorrow. I'm going to use you advice and check out the guide. I've planted some stuff in the Falador patches to start of with... hopefully my sweetcorn won't die this time. =D

If you fancy some power farming try hitting the allotments in turn, by the time you get back to the first one, your flowers are almost ready, plus you can keep an eye on the patches, so no need to pay the farmers. Check which crops you'll need to pay farmers to watch your fruit/trees and get a fair supply of them.

But make a plan! Think about the travel routes you can use, and the bank stops you'll have to make. Once you get a routine that suits you, you can start sticking in extras, like pickpocketing farmers to replenish some seeds.

Using jute fibres to pay the farmers for sweet corn prevents dying. It also adds a bit of farming xp, and the seeds are cheap. The Yanille patch is close to the teleport spot.

Allotments seem to be helping at the moment though. I have only done a small amount of farming but I have got 2 levels already. I doubt they will be useful at high levels though.

Some allotments are nice, I like farming watermelons as they are nice and cheap-ish xp and I get to use them to pay the farmers to protect my pineapples.

Oh thanks for that. =D

Allotments are slow xp, and poor value because their gp/xp ratio is not very good. You also have to do a whole separate run for them and it's one of the slower runs in the skill. I mean, they're better than hops, I guess, but generally not worth doing.

Oh, OK thank you. Although at the moment I think I am still going to go do allotments as I am still at a low level, once I need about 10k exp per level or something I think I will move onto only doing things with high exp ratio. I have also planted two oaks and I think they are ready to be cut down. =P

I will be doing apple trees next I think.
