99 Prayer, how did you achieve it?

Hey all, 99 prayer for some reason has been a goal of mine since i started playing rs. Not sure why I just like the skill/cape.

My question is how did you all get it? Did you buy the bones or farm them yourself?

If you did just buy the bones did you get the cash through monster hunting?

I worked it out from 70 prayer it will cost roughly 170mil using drag bones at a guilded alter, considering im on 18m im at a loss.

My lvls arn't that high im 85att, 90str, 85def, 70 prayer, 70 sum, 72 range and 73 mage.

Im thinking i might have to just put the goal aside for now and lvl thorugh slayer untill i have higher stats for boss hunting.

Don't worry so much about going to 99 at your levels. Just keep on slaying raiding up those other skills. Make sure you bank every dragon bone and Infernal ashes you get. Use gilded altar for bones and the ectofuntus for the ash (no need for grinding, just buckets of slime).

If you are serious about getting a high prayer level then make sure you do your dailies/weeklies/monthlies that help out. This includes:

Jack of Trades (4,860) daily

Penguins (28,000) weekly

Troll invasion (38,880) monthly

That's almost 300k xp a month without having to bury or grind a single bone. Then you've also got an potential SoF lamps:

Small lamp (2,593)

Med lamp (5,186)

Large lamp (10,371)

Huge lamp (20,741)

Xp rates are based on 70 prayer. Obviously as you go up the xp you get for these things will also increase.

I think I spent a good 50-100million on prayer and was gifted the remainder by a good friend who wanted to see me get 99 at RuneFest.

I bought the vast majority of the bones I've used as a member. It just isn't viable for me to farm my own when I can "afford" to buy and use them efficiently.

From 70 to about 85 I did it in drabs, buying 1k bones here and then when I had the excess (not often) cash. On the way to SS, and Turm, I set a 0 point (which was 10m) that I was to keep, so I made money through slayer/farm (when they were profitable) and occasional bosshunting, and spending back down to 10m until I had enough bones.

95-99 was funded by ganodermics.

Dragon bones all the way.

I bought bones from farming money 80-95, keeping 2-3m all times and spending cash on 840 bones at the time (one war tortoise). Then later I bought 99 much the same way but with a claw drop thrown in.

I bought prayer all the way from 1 to 99. Not a single xp lamp was used. All with manually using d bones on a gilded altar.

Got 1-82 prayer in one day... Started at combat 113(maxed melee) and after a few bones I was already combat 115

I didn't really train prayer actively for the longest time (aka from 2002 until round when ss/turm was released). It just rolled in by itself through quest rewards etc. I often used various lamps on it (diaries and quests mainly), so I was 80-ish when I decided to go for the push. I kept all bones and inf ash from slayer tasks, plus all my slayer drops (including runes, var rune armour etc, I suffer from packratitis) were chucked in the GE and bones/ash bought for returning cash. It did help immensely that I was on a major slayer binge at the time.

I have 99 banked, just need to get round to using the bones.

The way I did it was stages. Got 70 for Piety ages ago and then once curses were released I made money through merchanting to pay for 95, since then I have gotten 85dg and kill Frost Dragons for money. I sell the frost bones and buy normal dragon bones.

I also waited to buy all my bones when I felt they were at a good price. I payed 2,810 p/bone about 2 weeks ago as I personally believe there will be another bot nuke in the very near future and also the new combat system could have new prayers that people want to train for. If these two things happen then prices could go sky high for bones. After the first big bot nuke they went up to nearly 5k each at one point. I have invested all my money in dragon bones so I actually have more than I need. Hopefully it pays off tomorrow when we see how combat is going to change and if not they should go up a bit whenever the next bot nuke occurs.

My overall advice would be to buy bones as soon as you can before the next bot nuke and then train it up in stages like most other people seem to do.

I made the money from bandos solo/duos and bought dragon bones to use on my gilded alter.

A friend of mine did frost dragons and used the bones himself because he's a DIYer, i do not recommend doing this, if you use frost dragons for cash (nothing wrong with that) make sure you sell the bones and use the cash to buy regular dragon bones as you will save so much time from combat only to spend a few hours longer at the altar.

Garbage maths incoming: Experience rates used with an approximation of 1300 bones being used an hour, easily accomplished by using a medium level BoB. Prices based on current market GE prices.

D bones are roughly 327k/hour experience for 4210k/hour cost. (39.7 hours from 1-99) 167m

Frost bones are roughly 819k/hour experience for 19173k/hour cost. (15.8 hours from 1-99) 302m

23.9 hours saved for 135m, that puts your time at 5648k/hour, something very few people without turmoil can make :P

This is probably quite inaccurate but i think you get the idea, if you make less than 5m/hour like most people, avoid frost dragon bones. (Unless you're close and enjoy the money maker and hate using the altar, so would rather spend more time but have more fun, which is understandable)

^While that math is generally correct, you need to take into account the combat & effigy xp gained from moneymaking. 25 hours of frosts will get you ~4 effigies even now, which is worth about 5 hours of skilling.

Yeah, i meant to class that into the "if you find it more enjoyable/it has useful side effects"

Generally speaking though, if yakless frosts are your primary source of money, it's NEVER going to be the absolute best option to use frost dragon bones for training prayer. He could even do the same amount of frosts and still sell the bones, do a little more altar, but use the additional money to fund overloads or another 99.

I did prayer in chunks, of about 15-20m at a time, and I had a lot of free xp tossed in there from penguins, jack of trades, and so forth. I was also gifted 4k dragon bones from a friend who quit :(
