Slender - Terrifying New (Free) Horror Game

From a fansite:

"Slender is a first person horror game created by Parsec Productions where your only goal is to find 8 manuscripts about the Slender Man, a paranormal creature.

The more directly you come in contact with the Slender Man, the faster your sanity drains."

Basically, you run around a dark forest armed only with a flashlight and try to collect the pages while not being taken by the Slender Man. It only takes a few minutes to play each time and it's really difficult to beat. You will feel like you're being watched the whole time... because you are. This game is very, very good at making you jump. Don't turn around.

Has anyone played this before? My record is 6/8 pages and I think you'd need to memorize the whole map if you want to make it to 8.

There are some download links here, but I haven't tried them out (remember this is just a fansite, so you might want to scan them). Look for a torrent or something if download links aren't working, there have been a lot of people downloading it recently.

EDIT: These download links should work:

Yeah, my record is 7/8. I kept running into trees and after that you're done since he's so fast. Pretty thrilling game, even the people watching me play get freaked out.

I played it a couple of times, 6/8 was probably my record. It is really atmospheric in a dark room with decent headphones. The ambient noise/soundtrack really helps make up its shortcomings in other areas, though after two or three lives it gets pretty dull.

And since then the scariness of it decreases proportionally to the amount of tools I see playing it on Youtube.

since the whole thing is just build up to a jumpscare.

UGH jumpscares. I was going to try it, but now I'll just check it out on Youtube. That's the problem with SCP-087, too. They show that they're capable of building up a suspensful and creepy atmoshere, and then resort to the cheapest move in the book.

Come on, there's really no such thing as a scary game or movie if it doesn't include a jump scare. The only reason a suspenseful atmosphere is even scary is because you're scared that something is going to pop out at you.

Found one page, got bored.

It should really only take 30 seconds to find your first page, you must have a pretty short attention span. And if you didn't even have an encounter with the Slender Man you didn't even experience the game!

Having a jump scare is allright. Being centered around a single jumpscare is the very definition of a bad horror game. Stuff loike the penumbra series and amnesia understand this and have a lot more than a random scream/monster appearence.

Slender is only a jumpscare. It has build up sure, but nothing to write home about. Never really understood what made this game popular, and I watched pewdiepie's original video when it came out, and even then I didn't get it. Just shows people will gobble anything that involves a face cam on youtube.

It's success as a horror game has a lot to do with a key thing. Along the same vein of the SCP: Containment Breach, it's a game that centers around a character with a huge mythos behind it. It's not all about the facecam like you're suggesting, but also because there are volumes and volumes of stuff created around this terrifying idea, much like things from the SCP series. (Also Pewdiepie had crappy LPs of slender that didn't do it justice because everything he does is forced >_> I much preferred 666theheartless666's LP.)

It might not be the best horror game in the world. Its tenuous grasp to the horror genre hinges really on the work driven behind the Slender Man rather than what the game presents. You also have to remember that this game is in beta and isn't finished. So if you know nothing of the Slender Man story, you'll probably find it boring rather than an exciting release you'd track closely.

To clarify, I found one page, kept walking, saw the Slender man out of the corner of my eye, kept walking, turned left, and saw this horribly-rendered piece of [see edit] thing waving tentacles at me, then a cliche fuzzed-out white face, then got an endgame screen. That's when I decided I was bored and didn't play it.

I completely agree - it's not really a great game at all. It's a fad, and it will die a fad; it only got popular because it's free and it's supposedly horror, so people think it's funny to play and watch on youtube.

Edit: I removed a certain swearword because it wasn't automatically censored. I am not sure if the rules have been changed regarding this specific swearword.

  • 3 weeks later...

I heard about the game, decided to give it a go seeing as it's billed as 'terrifying' but it is really a massive let down

Started the game collect 4/8 pages kept seeing a lanky, faceless MIB agent in my flashlight randomly, then wham I am hit by static and a grainy CCTV of a white oval...no scare value at all, replayed the game a few more times same reaction (or lack thereof) to the Slender Man catching me 'terrifyingly'.

Wish I never wasted the time downloading and playing now...prefer to go play some of my old Silent Hill games on Playstation 1 & 2.
