Pitch

Please use this topic as a resource for your combat training (and please continue to contribute in the event of future RuneScape updates on combat - see the end of the OP for instructions on contributing).

[spoiler=Original Pitch]I'm hoping this data can be useful for wikis, fansites, and F2P players by allowing us to better find the best monsters to train on for each combat method. I then plan to use this data to better pinpoint the best training method for each of the three combats.

EDIT: Thanks everyone, both of the goals for this topic are complete!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Results: Training

  • Melee: Deadly Red Spiders
    • Gear: Rune 2h sword or Gravite 2h sword, full Rune armour, charged Rune Gauntlets, Carapace Boots, Amulet of Strength, Team Cape, Explorer's Ring. For Rejuvinate: Rune Scimitar and Rune Shield.

  • Ranged: Lesser Demons / Warped Bats / Ghosts
    • Gear: Magic Shortbow, Arrows of choice, full Blue D'hide armour (or full Batwing armour for Ghosts), Carapace Boots (or Batwing Boots for Ghosts), Amulet of Power, Team Cape, Explorer's Ring. For Rejuvinate: Magic Shieldbow.

  • Magic: Fire Blast on Ice Warriors (preferred method: High Alchemy or Superheat)
    • Bat Wand or Tower Mindspike or Gravite Staff (depending on your choice of spending), Bat Book (if using Bat Wand), full Batwing armour, Amulet of Magic (or Arcane Blast Necklace), Team Cape, Explorer's Ring. For Rejuvinate: Bat Shield.

Please leave a comment if you find better methods.

A list of most (if not all) of the things found outside of: Dungeoneering, Quest, Random Event, Melzar's Maze, and Wilderness enemies. They should all be correct as they were manually found today. Sorry about the bad formatting.

I largely feel like the list is complete :) I'm not seeing/thinking of anything else that could be added. There may be some monster data that needs to be edited though (e.g. specifying the location(s) of monsters that are repeated in the list and have different combat weaknesses/levels).

As for training, this is what I've found:

[spoiler=Some data]

Ranged

Here's what I got so far (79 ranged); unless otherwise specified all of these values are using momentum (I checked momentum vs. manual use of abilities to verify that momentum should be used over the manual method) and using Mithril arrows:

Greater Demon: 29-30k xp/hr

Hellhound: 29-30k xp/hr

Lesser Demon: 29-30k xp/hr (24k xp/hr with momentum, weird huh?)

Ghost: 28k xp/hr

Warped bat: 28k xp/hr

Deadly red spider: 26k xp/hr

Flesh Crawer: 26k

Catablepon: 24-25k xp/hr

Hill Giant: 18k-20k xp/hr

Giant spider: 17k xp/hr

Not crazy-accurate values, just good enough for comparisons. Actual xp/hr would be lower for those stronger monsters as you would have to heal or eat/bank, so in reality Ghosts or Warped Bats are likely the best way to train as you don't have to heal (and possibly Lessers? I'm unsure how powerful they are).

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Magic

Did some magic (level 70 magic).

Fire blast:

Ice Warrior: 44-45k

Ice Giant: 38-39k

Air blast:

Black guard: 26k

Hill Giants: 23k

Hobgoblin: 18k

Like with ranged, these values were done pretty quickly so they aren't 100% accurate as far as XP/hr but instead done with the intention of simply ranking and comparing to the other methods.

Alching and superheating are definitely (unfortunately) still the way to go with magic. It might be useful to try something like Ankous with Earth blast but I imagine that'll still be quite expensive for lower amounts of xp/hr.

Also, no more Crumble Undead :(

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Melee

I've been told Deadly red spiders are best for melee (with a r2h).

Results

The monsters for training should be:

Melee: Deadly red spiders

Ranged: Lessers/Ghosts/Warped Bats

Magic: Nothing (high alch/superheat)

Leave a comment if you find otherwise.

Would you like the monsters in F2P Dungeoneering to be listed as well? The combat level will vary of course, but the general weaknesses will always be the same. If yes, I can definitely contribute :)

It looks like Wiki users have already jumped on that: http://runescape.wik...eering/Monsters

(At least, on that specific page they did; it looks like they forgot to edit the individual pages of monsters haha)

I've edited in info on training.

  • 1 month later...

Honestly, I use Batwing boots for both. They've got the highest stats of any F2P footwear, and for mage boots they don't seem to affect either melee or ranged all that much.

THE place for all free players to connect, hang out and talk about how awesome it is to be F2P.

So, Kaida is the real version of every fictional science-badass? That explains a lot, actually...

Is there a reason why ranged users use batwing boots, yet melee users use carapace boots? I'd think it should be the other way around.

Using the combat triangle:

  • Melee armour is strong against ranged attacks, it's weak against mage attacks.
  • Ranged armour is strong against magic attacks, it's weak against melee attacks.
  • Magic armour is strong against melee attacks (that's some strong cloth, haha), it's weak against ranged attacks.

-----

For Melee:

  • Deadly red spiders use ranged, so melee armour is best. (There aren't melee boots so ranged boots seem like the best alternative, mage boots would be a bad idea as they're weak to ranged.)

-----

For Ranged:

  • Lesser Demons and Warped Bats use magic, so ranged armour is best.
  • Ghosts use melee, so mage armour is best.

You were correct with your concern with ranged, I had some things mixed up, I've updated that (thanks!).

-----

For magic:

  • Ice Warriors use melee, so mage armour is best.

eoc combat made this annoying :c.

Yeah :/ The whole reason I did combat was so I could AFK and take breaks from skilling, now that's gone (I don't play anymore, though, so I guess all worked out).

I imagine it's interesting for PVP, but I don't understand forcing it on PVM. I do like that they finally made different weapons/armours more useful, but at the cost of enjoyable combat.

Just throwing it out there, but a law or nature staff is going to be more accurate than either a fire staff or bat wand + book. Also, Caitlin's staff saves air runes (which are more expensive than fire runes) and is more accurate than a fire staff.

For the record Gravite staff = 550 accuracy, Law/nature staff = 530, bat wand = 450, bat book = 50, Caitlin's Staff = 50, Fire staff = 10.

I realise that it doesn't really matter, since high alching is still better xp, but thought it would be something useful to add.

If I want to train prayer as well, are ice giants still the best?

Probably (maybe someone with more experience can say more definitely). Air-blasting Hill Giants was supposedly pretty good (as they're weak to it and drop big bones) as well.

Ok so... what exactly should I change it to? Remove the things I have listed currently and put just Law/Nature Staff? Thanks :)
