Today we got our english and french midterms back(I'm in French immersion). I look at my french and go 'WOW!' 88's, 90's, 85's, heck, even a 95 in History! But then I see my english . . . 71 in Enligh, 80 in Science, and the lowest, a 50 in math(my worst subject).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Anyway, my question is, when you get bad grades, how do you break it to your parents?

I usually keep them informed on my progress so if things don't turn out how I hoped, atleast it won't hit them that hard. Math's not really an issue for me anymore and I regret not taking pre cal now :(

They've know forever I've hated math, and that I am horrible at it, but this is the first time in my LIFE getting below a 70.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I know this is unofficial(literally, my school doesn't make teachers do mid-terms and they are totally optional), but it's a sign of where I'm standing, and I really don't wanna do bad!

I'm horrible at math too... I have a 65 in Geometry for midterm. :( I usually just kinda tell my parents about it and then tell them that I'll bring it up, then I work as hard as possible to get it back up to a C.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This is the first time I've gotten below a C as well. :?

My problem is that I don't try hard enough. We have about 30 worksheets a term, thats about 30% of our grade, and I fail those. Somehow I ace the test(90-95), but thats only 60 percent of our grade. Participation/effort is the rest.

Ive never gotten anything worse then 80%.. I dont even study and I pull high 80's from exams.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kinda off topic, but its about school. When I was in grade 2 or 1, the teacher gave us a worksheet and we were supossed to name the images on the paper. And one looked like a fairy, so I put fairy. When I got it back it had a big red X right beside it with "girl". My mom thought it was outragoues.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I got 88 in math, 83 in language arts, 85 in social studies and 87 in science 8).

Ok, i say dont worry about your english and your science, as those are both good marks still. But ya, math probably not. Just work hard at it. Study it. I dont like math all that much eaither, i find it boring. But as long as you can get all the rules down, then youll do fine.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As for your parents, let them know. Perhaps ask them for help, and get them to do something. If they come down too hard, you cna always black mail saying that its their fault for not pay enough attention :twisted:

I'm in grade 12, but my parents haven't been involved in my education since elementary school (My mom at least. My dad, never). The only person my marks matter to is myself.

Every time I've failed a subject I've just thrown it out first, followed by the best :P

 

 

 

Mum usually is just 'meah' about it since we both know I'm paying to do it again :x

That's what I'd do.

I tell my parents straight out and express my (genuine) disappointment in myself when I do get a really low mark. Recently, I got 70% in my English assessment but much to my surprise, I was ranked 19th out of 64. I told my parents the bad news, and then the good news so I'm sure they had mixed feelings about the result.

My parents don't care if I get good or bad marks, they don't nagg when I get bad ones and they aren't happy when I have good marks, it's a pretty good deal :P

Yeah, I usualy do that as well. Also, I try and just tell them yeah, I screwed up. Your parrents probaly don't want to hear "well the teacher hates me and..." that stuff, they want to hear that yes, you messed up and are working on it.

I hide everything from my parents and am surprised when they randomly get my report card..

You can try a glass half full approach...

 

 

 

Tell your parents that you have tried your best and as a result done well in the subjects that interest you. You can't be expected to get straight A's and excell in everything, because if you are, you'll probably face a lot of disappointment later on in life.

 

 

 

This is not to say that you should be complacent, of course..

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

For the time being, think of your mid-terms as preparatory exams and try to work harder from now on. Hopefully, you'll improve by the end of the school year.

Although the passing grade at uni varies quite a bit between subjects, even the same subject - just during a different term :P I've had a subject where the passing grade was like 65% and another where it was 45%. Quite strange. More so when you repeat a subject, get almost exactly the same marks in everything, but instead of failing - you get a credit :lol:

I got to an international school here in the Philippines so the passing grade is 60%, but in normal schools passing grade is 75%, and if you're lower than that on the last quarter you go to summer school...

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

OT: At first when I started to do bad on Math my dad would get mad, until It continued to happen and would be happy if I just got over a C.

Geez, this is kinda sad. A good amount of individuals I know [including myself] 'suck' at Math, the most lovely [ :roll: ] subject I've ever known.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Throughout my years of being in school [i'm currently a Freshman]; I've always managed to pull off Math with a... B, save 8th Grade [best year ever; straight A's / A+'s], because I suppose our Arithmetic teacher was fairly lenient.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

But, anyway, on-topic-- you should worry about it [one would not get anywhere if he or she didn't], and explain the situation to your parents that it's fairly self-inflicted, if that was the case. My parents aren't particularly 'fair' when it comes to education [but at least I don't get flogged with a pointy stick if I don't get straight A's], but if they know about the grade and its 'whereabouts', chances are, the situation will improve.

Oh, and the school I go to is kinda lenient; 60% is a passing grade [a D], but, with the competition to be accepted into Universities nowadays, one might as well go to a Community College-- a big fat 'D' slaughters everything.
