Does my old method of killing steel dragons still work?

Featured Replies

I used to kill steel dragons all the time back before the evolution of combat update occurred. I know the update is very old now, but I'm for the most part used to it.

The way I killed steel dragons was this: I used wave, blast or bolt (with chaos gauntlets equipped) spells, mainly the fire ones. And while doing that I used antifire potions to protect myself from the fire of the steel dragons, while holding an anti-dragon shield of course.

I know what some of you might say, in fact people have told me before that this is not the best method to kill steel dragons.

The question isn't whether or not this is a good method. I use that method because I want to put the death, blood and chaos runes to good use. My question is does that method still work? I'm not sure if antifire potions will still fully protect me from dragon fire. Thanks a lot.

Metals are weak to water magic in eoc so its better now than pre-eoc.

Though you won't be using any chaos runes to do it and will only use death or blood if u use ancients.

As Sy said, they're weak to water now, so it would be best to use Water Surge (Wave may be just as good, not sure if damage scales to level of weapon still).

When using abilities (which is highly advisable for the vast majority of situations and especially so in light of Revolution) you won't use runes. For Water Surge you'll only need Air and Water Runes. You'll still need some, as Revolution sometimes fires off an auto-attack and you might accidentally use one yourself if going manual.

As your Herblore level is too low to use Super Antifires, you should use Antifire Potions (or Flasks, which give 36 as opposed to 24 total minutes of protection per inventory slot, if you intend to camp a very long time).

It would be wise to buy a Dragonfire Shield (Magic) as a normal Antifire Shield is melee-class and may give a penalty to accuracy.

You will also be needing a wand of some sort, as staves are almost all two-handed now. Your considerable options are:

Wand of Treachery (Level 70) - Cheap-as, but mediocre.

Abyssal Wand (Level 75) - Affordable, the tiering system makes it more superior to the Wand of Treachery than a 5-level difference might seem.

Virtus Wand (Level 80) - Somewhat expensive, but the same is true as the above in that the tiering system makes it a very effective weapon. Degrades, but degradation costs are minor.

Seismic Wand (Level 90) - Batshit crazy expensive. Godlike power with a heavy degradation cost. IF you can somehow afford this, use Earth Surge for slightly more damage despite their weakness.

Oh yes, my elemental fire staff is no longer one handed, in fact it's now two handed.

Oh man killing the steel dragons seems to have become harder than it used to be.

And it's not like I can use melee on them now either, because protect from melee no longer protects me from melee attacks.

I am totally screwed.

So is it not possible anymore to have a staff that gives me unlimited amount of a specific rune AND hold an antidragon shield at the same time? To be honest, I'm now scared.

Also, there is one question that remains unanswered. Do antidragon potions still protect me entirely from dragonbreath?

You cannot use a staff for unlimited runes and a Shield, Sorry.

But seeing as if you use revolution you will use almost no runes you will be fine even with a very low number of them.

I would suggest the same as G V T above for wands to use.

You're correct about melee, but Mage is best at Steel Dragons anyways as water magic is their weakness.

AntiFire potions do fully protect as long as you have an Anti shield or DragonFire shield (magic) as recommended above.

The equipment may have changed slightly, but I feel like Steel Dragons are easier to kill post-EOC.

Now I have another question, are fire spells now ineffective on steel dragons? Because I have a lot of fire runes in my bank, but not nearly as many water runes though.

If you have 500 water/air runes and use Revolution, you should be able to kill several 100+ steel dragons without an issue before those runes run out.

“I had a feeling we weren’t coming back from this fight when it began.”

“Do you have any regrets?”

“I don’t. It seems surprising, I know, but I wouldn’t change a thing. This is how it was meant to be.”

“Huh, you never really notice how lovely the day is until you realize you’ll never see it again.”

“Mmmhmm.”

They are Magic-weak, so any Magic attacks will be quite effective against them. However, using their specific elemental weakness will increase your accuracy slightly. As well as this, you simply want to use a spell requiring a Magic level equal to or higher than that of your weapon. I assume you can afford an Abyssal Wand, so you would need to use a spell requiring at least level 75.

To be honest, I prefer being able to hit for major damage when I'm able to it than do it accurately, but that's just me.

I'm not gonna kill steel dragons nearly yet, in fact there are other monsters I'm gonna kill before that happens.

But when I do I will go back to this thread and read the advice.

Ok, I will buy myself an abyssal wand before then.

I just looked up abyssal wand, and wow it costs about 10M coins.

I'm sorry, I don't think I will be able to make THAT much quickly. Especially considering the fact I make most of my money by fighting monsters and high alchemying their drops. Granted, that's not the quickest way, far from it, but it is the most fun in my opinion.

Wand of Treachery should be almost as good. You can then use water surge to maximise your accuracy and damage output.

I just wanna say thanks for all the help, guys. :-D

I'm glad you answered all my question.

Take care.

Sorry about bumping this thread, but I have another question.

Would it be enough to just bring the runes, my mystic robe outfit, my antidragon shield and antidragon potion and not bring any staff at all?

You need to at least carry a wand for casting spells. Wand of Treachery should be good enough for killing steel dragons if you use water surge.

If you attack the dragons from a distance, your shield and potion will protect you from all damage, so you don't really need to wear mystic robes.

You can't cast spells without a magic weapon in the main hand I don't think....

I don't wear my mystic robes for protection, I wear them to increase my accuracy when using attacking spells.

Unless that has changed and it doesn't work that way anymore.

Ugh, fine I will buy a wand before I kill the steel dragons. It doesn't look like I have much of a choice.

In the past combat spells would be auto-spells even if I wasn't holding a staff. I understand that it probably has changed with the introduction of evolution of combat. Which I have been getting used to.

You cannot use a staff and shield together though :P staves are now 2 handed, so you'll have to get a wand.

Armor, with the exception of "power armor", does not boost the accuracy or damage that you do. It only provides HP and defense, against the proper combat style.

Power armor, is:

Fremy armor (rockshell, spined, skeletal)

Demon slayer

God wars (bandos, armadyl, subjectation)

Nex armor (pernix, torva, virtus)

And the degrade-to-dust armor, sirenic, maleovent, and tectonic

Ego Sum Deus Quo Malum Caligo et Barathum

(And then those only slightly increase your damage dealt, without any effect on your accuracy.)

You forgot to mention void which is 10% to accuracy and 5% to damage.

Void is useless... Havent seen anyone using void for bossing or even slayer :s

I've seen a decent number of people in Void at Celestial Dragons.

I'm not sure how much it is used elsewhere, but I wanted to mention it as it wasn't on the list of Offensive Armor.

It is definately better than Fremennik armor (rockshell, spined, skeletal) especially for dragons (or elsewhere) where you have no chance of taking damage.

Also the accuracy boost is good if you are missing any of your attacks while in other armors.
