Free To Play Extravaganza | Prismania | Mammoth Outfits

The free-to-play version of RuneScape gets some serious love in this week’s update, with two new bosses and a tasty combat upgrade being the tip of the iceberg. Treasure Hunter will also be rocked by a boosted Prismania event, which offers up to 60% extra XP. Finally, some frankly fantastic mammoth outfits have arrived in Solomon's Store – check them out!

The free-to-play version of RuneScape has been given a powerful boost with new bosses, combat improvements and dungeoneering options.

F2P Bosses

Free players can now take on the mighty King Black Dragon by getting to his lair via the Wilderness. Only the bravest and best-equipped need apply. The drops, dragon bones and black dragonhides, are now sellable by free players, but can only be buried and processed by members. Note that the Edgeville artefact cannot be used in free-to-play worlds to access to this boss.

Similarly, the Giant Mole and hard-mode Giant Mole bosses in the Falador Mole Lair are also now available to battle in free-to-play worlds. As the Agility requirement for the short cuts in these boss fights was higher than free-to-play characters could reach, we have taken the decision to remove the short cuts from both members' and free-to-play worlds. This should create a more streamlined and enjoyable bossing experience. Mole skin drops are now sellable for free players too, but only members can hand them in to Wyson.

HINT: Free-to-play characters taking on this boss may wish to craft a special shield by finding the clingy mole drop. Attaching the mole to the anti-dragon shield can create a powerful ally for taking on these bosses.

F2P Combat

Combat options for free players have also received a super overhaul today. Perhaps the coolest part of this update is that dual-wielding is now possible. Not only does this look great, but the ability to use off-hand weapons can really revitalise your combat builds and set ups. In addition, a host of new combat abilities has also arrived:

  • Attack: Havoc & Flurry, Decimate, Dismember, Destroy & Hurricane
  • Ranged: Needle Strike, Snipe and Rapid Fire
  • Magic: Concentrated Blast, Dragon Breath and Wild Magic

F2P Dungeoneering

Some new weapons have also been added to the dungeoneering reward shop for free players. They are made of gravite, a powerful substance indeed, and can be purchased with reward tokens earned by Dungeoneering:

  • Off-hand gravite longsword
  • Off-hand gravite rapier
  • Gravite knife (a thrown-weapon that does not require ammunition, like Crystal chakrams)
  • Off-hand gravite knife
  • Gravite wand
  • Gravite orb

To help you, more Dungeoneering gear (up to Level 50) has also been made available to free players. This can only be worn in Daemonheim but is sturdy and will doubtlessly help with training the skill, earning tokens and unlocking the gravite weapons.

And that’s not all! The free-to-play game has also seen a host of bug fixes and improvements. Enjoy the new experiences and 'Scape until your heart’s content!

Treasure Hunter | Prismania Plus

From 3rd March until 7th March, Prismania will be making a welcome return to Treasure Hunter. Ready those Keys because this time it’s Prismania plus, meaning that all stars and lamps are not only prismatic but will offer an extra 10% XP-boost to a different skill group each day.

Solomon's Store | Mammoth Outfit

Fancy looking like a tusked, hulking brute with a giant trunk and even bigger axe? Well now you can thanks to the new mammoth outfits that have just come into stock in Solomon's Store!

Inspired by last year's Acheron mammoths, this is your chance to stomp around Gielinor like a prehistoric rock star.

Have fun!

  • Corrected a typo on one of the RuneMetrics interface tooltips.

  • Players returning to RuneScape after an extended break are now set into legacy combat and interface mode by default.
  • The Goebie reputation interface no longer occasionally shows progress towards a milestone as completed too early.
  • Resolved an issue where the prayer renew buff icon was vanishing from the buff bar after teleporting.
  • The master quest cape is now correctly greyed out when keepsaked if the requirements are not met.
  • Players no longer need to log out and in to re-equip their keepsaked master quest cape or completionist capes after achieving the last requirement.

Ninja Fixes

  • The camera no longer resets when entering a Barrows crypt.
  • Players can now use multiple prawn pennies and pounds at once, up to a maximum of 1000 charges.
  • Keybinds 3, 4 and 5 now work in deposit boxes for depositing backpack, equipped items and beast of burden respectively, as with banks.
  • The frozen key now holds up to 100 charges, instead of 10.
  • Incendiary shot now deals damage in a 3x3 area.
  • Players now have a few minutes’ grace period when logging out where they won't be prompted for their bank pin upon logging back in, including when switching worlds. This functionality can be toggled off in the Miscellaneous settings interface in the Game Settings window.
  • Players can now toggle the retro cosmetic look of their skillcapes in the Miscellaneous interface in the Game Settings window.
  • Players can now enable an option in the Miscellaneous settings interface in the Game Settings window to automatically teleport urns to Ernie when they are filled. This option also enables auto-studying the Invention skill accumulators.
  • The XP output of the Invention skill accumulators has been increased from 1,000 XP to 2,500 XP.

100 charge Frozen Key is hands down the best update of 2016.

“I had a feeling we weren’t coming back from this fight when it began.”

“Do you have any regrets?”

“I don’t. It seems surprising, I know, but I wouldn’t change a thing. This is how it was meant to be.”

“Huh, you never really notice how lovely the day is until you realize you’ll never see it again.”

“Mmmhmm.”

Out of curiosity, does the cost per charge remain the same or is it 10x cheaper now?

still 10k per charge

Ah okay, thanks.

Some wonderful updates by the quality of life updates overall :) - but what about making excalibur active by left-click on default, or at least a toggle for that? That would seem more useful than whether it's the second or third option...

I presume most of the people who want those two items have them by now. Aside from that, Nex prices and drops are pretty terrible and dismal.

You say only one as if there is any reason to get more than one...you make a t80 then go KK to make a full set of t90

For keepsaking and/or placeholders and/or collections. In my case, I need 6 emblems... Though I guess few in the game actually create a cohesive, well-done outfit for their character. It's either no overrides, hide most/all, or overload of garish Solomon's gear. Oh well.

And the tier 90 defenders look terrible, though I suppose that would be expected, since drygore weaponry looks like crap as well.

(By the way, getting a placeholder bronze defender when you have any higher-tier defenders is/was a total pain. I had to die with all my defenders. Why can't I just go in the room and get a bronze defender? The lady in the guild is evil.)

I'm not F2P but I think this is a nice update. RuneScape has always prided itself as being "the world's largest Free MMORPG" but I feel like the F2P side has been greatly neglected over the past couple of years. I think this is a good step in the right direction... because it keeps F2P players interested in such an old game which has really been targeting P2P players to spend money to keep it alive.
