Bubsa Posted April 17, 2006 Share Posted April 17, 2006 I just watched Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves while thinking: What makes a good bad guy? Now I have the answer: Alan Rickman :P He really is brilliant in this film. He's dispicably evil, and yet you love him for it! His charisma shines through his humour so well, particularly the way he enaunciates the lines during the wedding, where is patience has been tried for the final time. While being so funny and charismatic, you still find him very believable as a character, which I think is a great bit of method acting. Although, he manages the brilliantly drawn out, exaggerated, dramatic death. tintmangbpack Posted April 17, 2006 Share Posted April 17, 2006 I was watching the Sting a few nights ago, and I noticed how great Robert Shaw was in that movie. He basically was the best in all the scenes he was in. Personally I think a good bad guy needs a physical attribute that sets him apart from the other characters, like a scar, limp, hook :D , or some other noticeable mark. I also think that the bad guy needs to be able to do very evil things and not even think about it. To have that complete apathy towards doing evil really makes a bad person bad. megadedhed Posted April 30, 2006 Share Posted April 30, 2006 what makes a good bad guy? a good villan IMO is someone who the charrater can like...someone who the viewer develops some type of feeling for, wheither it be immense hatred or a liking of, a good villan must be a 3 dimensional charachter with more then just an "im evil" thing going for him Sigs made by Runemetsa, Nuzza, Dark_Shadow, Kuroi and Me.liquid blobs attacking eachother American Anime... You have to be able to recognize the villain and actor by this one look, it makes you feel more comfortable with the character, and more in-touch with the movie. ____ Posted April 30, 2006 Share Posted April 30, 2006 Aye, Rickman is supurb in Prince of Thieves. The supporting bad-guys let him down a bit though. A bit too soft compared to his performance. More so towards Michael Wincott (Guy of Gisborne) than anyone else. I think he just didn't get it up-there to make him makes the deeds he had done. The best "Bad Guy" per se, is perhaps David Thewlis as King Einon in Dragonheart. He brings across the coldness even with the apparent goodness from half a dragon heart. Perhaps not one to like as a character, but very well done. Following that I would have to say Christopher Lee from most of his bad guy roles. Especially his portrail of Francisco Scaramanga during The Man With The Golden Gun. Granted there is also the more recent Lord Of The Rings exposure which has him in a not so loveable position, but again very well done. Lastly on my list I'm backing Robert Davi for his role of Franz Sanchez in Licence to Kill. I tend to develop a liking for many James Bond villians. And I rank Sanchez next to Scaramanga in terms of lest "outright evil". There is also Jaws, but given his lack of exposure I can't really say much on that. indy500fan Posted April 30, 2006 Share Posted April 30, 2006 personally i really enjoyed Gary Oldman as the bad guy in Leon: The Proffesional. he was also the bad guy in The Fifth Element, but that is a different sort of movie, doesnt really count. apperantly he has played in True Romance (im going to watch that today, so i can remember what he played), Air Force One, Lost in Space, Hannibal, and the Harry Potter movies. for some reason i dont remember what he played in any of those, even though ive seen them all. :? but less specifically and more on the topic, i find that the movie makes the bad guy, not exactly his traits. if they build up how bad he is the entire movie (whether it is subtle or not is a moot point), it really makes the character bad. having said that, you can get a good bad guy right from the beginning. think star wars episode IV: a new hope. vader comes on the ship, is taller than everyone else, dressed all in black, deep voice (like pete said), picks up someone by the neck. the movie hasnt had time to build up to it yet, but you already know he is pure evil. conclusion? i have no idea what makes a good bad guy :lol: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I agree, Alan Rickman is the quintessential bad guy. My heart is broken by the terrible loss I have sustained in my old friends and companions and my poor soldiers. You know the end result, but it was just so amazing how he used everyone and managed such a long rule. I think it was more to do with the actual character he was playing than his acting. Just a little bit too "out there evil" for what would've been suitable. Christopher Guest from The Princess Bride (he was the Count). He's so calm and matter of fact in that movie. It was great, and is one of my favorite movies. But king of the bad boys is of course Mr. Walken, and what do you think of Agent Smith in the Matrix series? :) And the old Dutchie Rutger Hauer. I'm undecided on when exactly Smith, as a character, lost his evilness and moved to just "die already" like you get with a lot of useless characters in movies :-? The first is the classical, deep-voiced and powerful genius who always makes a crucial mistake in the end. The second one is the more or less realistic villain, characterized by wit, overall intelligence, know-how and manipulative yet flawless behavioure. That's why my vote goes to Kevin Spacey, who was brilliant in Se7en and The Usual Suspects as an anti-hero described above.
