Loge_05
Today, the British Governemnt pledged stop feeding kids the "rubbish that they have been given for decades". New Education Secretary Alan Johnson has outlined new rules which restricts the amount of 'junk food' being served to children. When asked whether there is enough contractors he said, "If you put the investment in, which we're doing, if you insist on the quality and you insist that our kids can no longer be given the kind of rubbish that they have been given for decades, you will find the contractors." What I would like to ask is how you find the meals in your School? Is it the same type of meal over and over again or is there some variety? Do you think this will be an improvement or not? Mr_Putter
Personally I think this is good. They serve salads and vegitables and healthy things in my cafteria at school, but I would say 70%+ of the sales come from fries/pizza/burgers...Mostly fries. People like to complain that they should have the choice, then they make the wrong one. Then they blame everyone but themselves. This is a good idea, I think every school should do this, and while you may not see a drastic decrease in obesity among teens (thought there would be one to an extent), I guarantee it would build better eating habits and the people would grow up with those and be healthier. Phil
If kids want to eat the stuff they will find a way to do it. For example, there's always ice cream vans sitting outside schools these days selling everything that is unhealthy. If there wasn't the kids would walk to the nearest mac'ds, shop, burger van etc.

Bubsa
I'm glad the schools have taken this step. Jesus, I know our "chicken burgers", it's like a heart attack in a bun. What Phil says may be true, but I do believe the schools are making a good step in banning this junk food. It's one less resource and, hopefully, it might be an indication to children that this food really is smeg and nothing more. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you. We were located off the business district of our town and didnt want anyone getting hurt. Its a great idea not to allow kids to leave however i do believe we should have freedom of choice in picking our lunch and not having to worry about sneaking out just for some subway. Arcticrunite
Nope, we were FORCED to stay into school. They wouldnt let us out unless it was a damn good excuse. We had like a whole squad of police men patrolling parking lots watching for us. But yeah they wouldnt allow us to leave. It was like a weeks suspension and if any tests were done during then it was a 0/100 :(

Pete_the_Viscous
I once went to a school where there were patrolling policemen to stop people getting out... but it was a rough school, and, frankly, they were needed. Glad I didn't stay there. School (or rather college) food is quite good. The sandwiches used to be terrible, but they've really improved lately. As for hot food, there's a reasonable selection, and they've started doing more salady things recently. Not sure whether or not they'd be affected, though, not being a school. deviantart account
megakiller32
I go to a private school, so the school chooses what it feeds us, and i think the food is very good, not all the junk you get in state schools :| Quit Runescape 30th May 2006.Thanks to Hawkxs for my signature :)

woopidoo2
Why not forbid All of these ''School Meals?" Here in The Netherlands we all take food from our own homes, eat it at school, and if we feel like a small snack (Mars, Snickers, 0,5 liters of cola, orange soda) you buy 1, or 2, and youve ate einuf before the next class begins. simple as that. for fries and burgers you go to a snackbar, but not to school where ur supposed to learn, not to eat. ? Do you think this will be an improvement or not? Great improvement if you ask me. But yeah I agree it's a start, with what the schools are trying. In my school would be great to go out to have some decent food, but we are surrounded by 4 gigantic wals, and for each wall you have an entrace, with, or is closed or have some "security" guys that wont let you go out... So we have to eat school food, and yes, they can keep us locked at school :( ~komodo
Giordano
I think you're old enough (high schoolers I mean, I'm in 8th though-HS Sept.) to pick your own food. At my school (and the high school I'm going to) has a "Health Plan". They say EVERYTHING is healthy. They serve ok meals, but I'll like some soda or burgers once in a while. Where I live you cant go out unless a good excuise and a parent's permission. Come on, we are old enough to pick our own foods. They school should teach us responisblty on choosing what we eat. If you eat fires and soda everyday it's obious you're gonna turn into a 300 pound Peter Griffen. "The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is." All the public schools in my area are open campus, but my private school is closed campus... We are about 30 second car or like 5 minute walking distance from a Wal Mart, KFC, Carls Junior, Quiznos, a Mexican Restaurant, and more... But we have to stay at school... :( Although, since we are private we have 'decent' lunches: Mondays- Pizza, real, not fake microwave junk Tuesdays- Taco Bell Wednesdays- Random thing, calzones, pasta, etc. Thursdays- Carls Junior  Fridays- Pizza Again We also have coke and candy machines, so it is liveable, but why can't it just be open campus!? SAGE
Er well here we have to bring our own or buy food from the blatantly overpriced canteen. Can't leave the school at all unless your in Year 12.
Lionheart_0
Our school serves a alot of unhealthy foods, but also searve alot of healthy foods as well (i.e. salads, muffins, wraps). Surprisingly enough, alot of people eat these foods. Even the fries are alot more healthy then fastfood resturant fries (working at wendy's, i know this). Also we are allowed to go whereever we want during highschool. Like many people just leave and walk around the neibourhood, and then just go back to school, get board, and go out more. They even encourage us to go outside during the better weather! There is a large mall about 10 minutes up the street from the school, and has a full food court, and a McD accross the street. All in all, i think its up to ourselves if we want this unhealthy food. Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! Behave or I will send my Moose mounted Beaver launchers at you! weezcake
Personally, I think this is a good idea. I was angry about the SFUSD's (San Francisco Unified School District) decision to ban junk food and sodas in schools. But I decided that I don't really need that kind of food and started eating a bit healthier (though I still eat junk food :P) I drink less soda, eat less candy.. which is good. I haven't eaten a burger from a fast food joint in almost half a year, though I did get a burger from Carls Jr. at the Silo (where the restaurants are on campus). *martha stewart voice* It's a good thing. ==================================Retired tip.it moderator.Teaching and inspiring.
