Wow... funny I should run into this thread on my first time on Tip.it in over a month... because I just got my braces...... TAKEN OFF, not just 4 hours ago :D :D :D :D :D :D

Oh man it felt so great to be able to feel my teeth again, and it felt so weird to eat an apple because i keep thinking i will get a lot of food in my braces and teeth.

The first week of having braces is the worst. It's hard to eat food, and your body thinks it is food so you keep producing saliva, which is gross. Eventually that goes away and you won't notice them at all, until you smile that is. Phew thank god mine are off i feel so great its the best ever.

Oh and howcome you can't have ribs? I had ribs just a couple of weeks ago and they were no worse than any other meat or food. The worst are apples unless you eat them cut up and chew with your molars. But ya, I never restricted myself to any food, you can eat any food fine as long as you have a drink to help get the food out of your braces.

Oh how I dreaded the days when I wore braces. I wore mine for 1-2 years (I can't remember how long exactly). I know how they feel tho, it's such an annoyance and can be quite painful at times.

The thing i hated about them the most was that whenever my mouth would get used to the tightness of the braces, it would be about time for my next appointment where they would tighten them even further #-o

You'll get used to them tho over time and learn like what are good things and bad things to eat with them.

The only real problem I have with my teeth is an overbite and some kind of minor alignment thing - they still look perfectly normal though. When I went to the orthodontist he couldn't give me a straight answer and said that if I did get them it'd be three years plus a retainer every night for the rest of my life. The way I figure it my teeth look perfectly normal aside from the overbite, and it is most definently not worth the paperwork and insurance to get them, plus the social ridicule. I promptly declined.

I had braces during high school, and at first they chafed and caused plenty of canker sores. Your mouth gets used to them and makes more saliva and the skin inside your lips get thicker when you've had your braces for a little bit. Proof? When you finally get your braces off, your teeth feel kinda slimy and I couldn't suck in my cheeks like a fish anymore. I'm a little sad about that...

I'd have to say I've never had any social ridicule because of my braces =\

Lucky lucky you. I live 15 minutes away from a military base, so it seems as though half the people I know need to be rigidly conforming to one extreme or style or another, and are therefore unable to tolerate anything remotely different from their middle class suburbanite spoiled MTV customs. It's perfectly fine if one of them gets braces, but once somebody whose family "can't afford" to shop at American Eagle (which is rather funny I think, given the fact that my family rakes in somewhere around $90k a year, and we believe in college and cultural experience moreso than iPods, plasma televisions and $120 skating shoes) they feel that they are simply more exotically, radically different and intolerable due to the fact that they form different opinions.

I know that many people have the same rant about "preppies" and such, but my qualm is not with the way they dress or the music they listen to, but the fact that they believe that it is quantifiably superior and their shortsightedness, as well as refusal to acknowledge reason and converse willingness to embrace various logical fallacies brought forth by multi-billion-dollar media conglomerates and associated parties is simply unbearably aggravating once you come to terms with the disheartening fact that you'll have to cope with such numbnuts for four years of secondary school.

Excuse my off-topic rant, back to the point - if I get them then 50% of the people with whom I must interact with during school will be baselessly and unrelentingly hateful towards me. 'Nuff said.

I was able to eat anything I wanted after about 1 month, including ribs. They hurt again the first 5 times you get them tightened, maybe for a day or two but after that you can practically eat ribs the day you get them tightened.

But however, there's 1 thing I can't eat... Chewing gum + Starbursts.

The starbursts make the gum into a mush like wet toilet paper and it sinks by your braces.

Also since braces push your teeth in the wire will be going back but every now and then the dentist might clip the end of the wire off, I suggest asking him to do that if it still pokes you once you haveto get your braces tightened for the first time.

Well I have had braces for three and a half years now, and "should" get them off this summer. I know it will all be worth it, but you know what really bugs me? I had braces during elementary school for at least two years and yet I had to get them again...

Now what you do is play a brass instrament (preferably French Horn for the small mouthpiece) and get your lips so soar that they practicaly fall off. :-#

Ya, I know a few people who play in the band and have braces, and what I know about them? IT IS NOT FUN.

I play cornet in the school band, really small mouthpeice also. Several times my lips cut open from playing over an hour with the really high notes. :-X

Good thing is whenever you don't want to play just say you can't cause you just got your braces tightened.

Ugh. I got them Thursday. They suck! I have to eat really soft things, nothing hard. It really hurts my teeth. One of the brackets broke off the first day lol. Didn't they give you wax to put on your brackets if they hurt? They gave me that stuff.

after a few days (or weeks i forget lol) they stop hurting and u can eat anything like they arnt even there... i would know ive had em since 3rd grade (when i wuz 9) and now im in 6th grade going into 7th grade (turning 13 next year) and im gonna have em till like 10th grade (16 years old)

what about those invisalign things, theyre like plastic mouth peices that move your teeth slowly into the desired position, if i ad to get braces i would rather get these than armor over my teetth

Invisalign? I actually wanted to get those, and begged my parents to let me get those instead of braces - until I learned how much more money they were than them. =\
