July 31, 200619 yr Lately I've been considering biking ~7-10 miles to school on mainly rural roads and it's starting to sound great with gas hitting $3 a gallon. (It might not be to school, at the very least it'll be a bike to town and back after school, which is basically a block from school). I was just wondering if anyone had any helpful tips that I should consider before starting some moderate biking tomorrow. I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
July 31, 200619 yr Well, considering that it's summer, you might want to bring some water along to stay hydrated. ^_^ You also want to stretch to make sure you won't be hurting later. Oh... and, don't fall off the bike.
July 31, 200619 yr I bike 15 km. when I don't feel like jogging. When I bike, I don't even break half the sweat I get with running. It might sound long when you think about it, but it's nothing once you get to it. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::
July 31, 200619 yr Buy a hydration pack, you're good to go. And make sure you know how to use your gears effectively.
July 31, 200619 yr Be sure to stretch out after biking, especially if you haven't done any biking in a while. Ideally, you should stretch a little before and after, but I think afterwards is most important and effective.
July 31, 200619 yr Wear a helmet  otherwise check how much air is in your tire, and make sure your brakes work before every trip. dude i got pked and lost my full zezima
July 31, 200619 yr Wear a helmet  Word. It may not be a motorcycle, but you don't want to risk ending up like Ben Roethlisisiblbilbergerere This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
July 31, 200619 yr what kind of bike are you getting? i know next to nothing about bikes, i dont even know if i can still ride one  . but im thinking about buying one and using it for the short trips around.
July 31, 200619 yr Wear a helmet  This is a must. I nearly had my brains dashed out against a rock when I was on my bike. My helmet saved me and had a rock this size of a fist jammed into it. If that had been my skull there is no dount I would have died. Hats may look a bit stupid but they really do save lives. Thanks Venomai for this super sig and Kwimbob for the awesome avatar!
July 31, 200619 yr hah its easy ive got a semi racing bike and i can bike the 7 miles to my freinds house, in about 30mins. Not too hard, don't even break a sweat : hows the weather up there. where the rich people live. currently, in the poor area its -1.
July 31, 200619 yr Author what kind of bike are you getting? i know next to nothing about bikes, i dont even know if i can still ride one  . but im thinking about buying one and using it for the short trips around. I'm going to use an old mountain bike of mine with 21 gears Now for my next question, how do you know if a bike still fits you? :P I haven't been on this for at least 3-4 years and I looked at it a few minutes ago and it had waspnests all over it xD Wear a helmet  This is a must. Hm, the area I'd be biking is just plains area with no real rocks scattered around. Ditches are grass (and a bit of poison ivy at the minute >.>). However I'll consider that if I ever go on vacation and decide to take my bike with me if I like it :D I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
July 31, 200619 yr If your knees hit the handlebars, or come close to hitting them, or if it's just uncomfortable then you're probably too big for the bike.
July 31, 200619 yr If you can still ride it and brakes work, and you can plant both feet on the ground firmly, then it works...(thats what i go by). Still wear a helmet anyways, just in case u fall and bounce ur head on the ground a couple of times. dude i got pked and lost my full zezima
July 31, 200619 yr Author Guess I'll have to look at getting a new bike. To ride it comfortable the seat has to be a foot above the base of where it's put in >.o And then I have to stretch to reach the handlebars Next question, choosing a bike! What type of bike should I choose? I'd like to have something that'll do well for when I'm at college, but still be able to traverse the 2-3 miles of somewhat rutty dirt road for the next year I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.

Get a $70 bike from your local target or walmart. It will do. dude i got pked and lost my full zezima

July 31, 200619 yr lol...then again u can always go for a tricycle. ;) dude i got pked and lost my full zezima
July 31, 200619 yr Go to any garage sale in your area and find a lightweight 14 speed street bicycle. They're cheap, fast, and you'll be Tour de France material in no time. Oops, I missed the part about the dirt roads. Okay, get a lightweight MOUNTAIN bike instead. the russians are the best! Hands down!
July 31, 200619 yr Remember that you get what you pay for. If you're going for a bike with front suspension steer clear of "SR Suntour" and other nonbranded forks, look for Marzocchi/Rockshoxx/Manitou and the higher end RST. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.

So in what price range (USD please ;) ) would a decent bike be without having to dip into Wally World? I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
July 31, 200619 yr Author That's not too bad, and I could always find something at a garage sale for a lot cheaper :D I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
July 31, 200619 yr I can't tell you in USD because I've never bought a bike in the US. I'm not really that good for suggesting a normal bike because I was only interested in things which aren't so practical for commuting - I like trials and downhill. However, crap is crap whatever it is being used for. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.
August 1, 200619 yr I also have a few questions about bikes. So I've had a mountain bike pretty much all of my life, and I have been interested in biking some longer distances than just around my neighborhood a few times. My first problem is my seat. Every time I go for more than 5 minutes, my bottom hurts from the seat :wall: . The seat feels soft when I touch it with my hand.. Maybe my seat is too small? I've this bike for like 5 years, so that's probably why :o , but the seat can adjust to fit me fine so I don't think it's the height. Another thing I was wondering was why people use the bikes with the thin wheels. I'm assuming you go a bit faster, but is it worth the risk? I mean it seems like if you hit a rock you would be dead those tires are so dinky. Do you guys ride on the roads that don't have sidewalks? One of the things I hate most when I'm driving is when there's a biker on the road either beside or in front of me. I never know if he is giong to swerve all the sudden into the middle of the road or what. It seems pretty hard to ride a bike with only a couple feet in between you and other cars / grass or rocks. While I was researching biking I picked up a few things that might answer your questions. Yes, they make the bike go faster, but they aren't for offroading where they're likely to hit a rock large enough to make them go off balance. And I think it was the faster you go, the stabler you are. I also read that in some places biking on the sidewalk is illegal. In my state (Kansas) at least a bike has the exact same rights as a vehicle. I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
