August 1, 200619 yr New prayers look good - makes my 60 prayer worth while. Shame I'll be on holiday when one or two of the updates are released/ Me too. I think this month looks kinda mediocre. I like that they're redoing old stuff, but there's no big special update in August. As Jagex stated, august is the time for hollidays :P wow, no holidays come to mind for august off the top of my head except my parents birthdays... Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain says: what [bleep]in holiday is in august? Mike says: omfg Mike says: is there one? Mike says: hold on Mike says: i'll check Mike says: isn't one
August 1, 200619 yr bloody refers to the blood of Christ and is a pretty big slang there. I'm American by the way but love English literature. Canterbury Tales FTW!
August 1, 200619 yr Hmm, all languages are 'made-up' It is true that the English (although the term loses some meaning doing back this far) made up the word holiday as a compounding of two old norse words. However, seeing as it can be traced back upwards of 600 years I would have thought everyone would have had time to get used to it by now :) So as you can see we're going to have to blame those norwegians for the word holiday. Btw, Vacation is actually derived from latin and dates from about the same time (I guess we made that one up as well :)) Back on topic now: THose prayer spells look useful. I guess I'm going to have to ecto all those bones I've been saving
August 2, 200619 yr This thread is a splitt-off from the august update discussion thread in General P2P. I have allowed the discussion about the difference in language to continue here. - "I am willing to die...I mean try" - Jewelfire (Want to go bossing?) -"we tried, we cried and we died!" - Limparse (What happens to old farts and tarts on monster-hunts) - "...and we found out that there are as many ways to get to warriors guild ...as there are elders trying to get there" - Lysi *snods agely* sorry... *nods sagely* - Brammy -"Equality is being treated the SAME as everyone else; not having special treatment and unique things added in to everything." - Sy_Accursed
August 2, 200619 yr No offense to English people, but I couldn't image calling my trunk a "boot". I could call an Elevator a "lift", because thats...what it does...But the "boot" thing...I'm glad they changed that. The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past. - Me!
August 2, 200619 yr Of course, we all know that the modern English language was predominantly stolen from French and Latin, don't we? This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
August 2, 200619 yr With my *very* basic understanding of linguistic principles, I'd really like to know how English and 'American' are supposed to be different languages. Some of the words have a slightly different meaning to different people, some of the spelling is different (flavour vs. flavor, etc.) and new words are used to reflect local culture and customs. Other than that, the two languages are exactly the same. The rules of grammar are identical, and about 99.98% of the words still share a meaning. General 'American' probably isn't even different enough to be considered a dialect of English... kind of a non-issue really. August 2, 200619 yr Of course, we all know that the modern English language was predominantly stolen from French and Latin, don't we?England stole their language of Latin and then America comes along and makes a pathetic attempt to steal it chnging a few words in it like 'gas' and 'cell phone'. :notalk:
August 2, 200619 yr Petrol and a mobile phone? :P America can keep it's language and England (and Aus+others) can keep theirs. Why not just agree to disagree? :-w
August 2, 200619 yr People should know better than to drag stuff from RS forums to here in OT. :| :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::
August 2, 200619 yr :boohoo: but like everything, america steals it and makes it better :D Roflmao  You're joking right? "The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is."

August 2, 200619 yr I find this discussion rather funny and interesting - please go on. Just do not drag stereotypic insults and hurtful assaults in it My 2 cc: The United States of America was colonised by europeans in the 16th century and from that century till our days its been a mix of people all over the world settling down in that country. The reason the language is so "generous" with its pronouncing is because its been influenced by spanish, italian, irish, norwegian, swedish, danish and so on. /2 cc - "I am willing to die...I mean try" - Jewelfire (Want to go bossing?) -"we tried, we cried and we died!" - Limparse (What happens to old farts and tarts on monster-hunts) - "...and we found out that there are as many ways to get to warriors guild ...as there are elders trying to get there" - Lysi *snods agely* sorry... *nods sagely* - Brammy -"Equality is being treated the SAME as everyone else; not having special treatment and unique things added in to everything." - Sy_Accursed
August 2, 200619 yr Of course, we all know that the modern English language was predominantly stolen from French and Latin, don't we? Tsk tsk tsk. Bubs, you disappoint me =; . English is mainly a gathering of both Germanic and Romanic languages. The first roots of English were to be found in the period after the Romans left England and when the 'barbarians' settled in. These tribes, the Anglo-Saxons (from nothern Holland), the Jutes (from Denmark) and the Scandinavian Vikings eventually fought out many wars, and became more or less one people, that spoke a common language, which is the ancestor of modern English. But then the French had to meddle in, and when William the Conqueror conquered (what in a name? :P) England from these gathered tribes in 1066, the ol' English was mixed with traditional French and it became the English that sorta is what it is today. Thanks to those Dutch and Scandinavian tribes, English is a Germanic language, not a Romanic one, like Latin, French, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese. Imagine the world speaking French all of the time. Ca sera dr̮̫̉̉le, n'est ce pas? Bill Hicks":dhj2kan9]Since the one thing we can say about fundamental matter is, that it is vibrating. August 2, 200619 yr okay look 1st of all ENGLISH RULES 2nd All languages have words borrowed from another language and changed slightly (except latin) Vulgar Latin (the Latin that was spoken on the streets) originates from Faliscan, Osco-Umbrian and Venetic, 3 older Etruscian languages. Classical Latin that you find in books is based on what Roman writers developped based on this vulgar Latin, that they didn't want to use in official circumstances, like in books, in court or simply when the aristocracy spoke with eachother so that they could distinguish themselves from the 'plebs'. Every language orginates from another, there's no ancient primal language or something. It's like Darwin's evolution theory: some sounds were used to identify things, and eventually a primitive language was formed. Then the words that remained were the ones that were better in some way than other alternatives, survival of the fittest. Who now still uses the word ignoramus when you can just as well call him a fool? Bill Hicks":dhj2kan9]Since the one thing we can say about fundamental matter is, that it is vibrating. His Briton ancestors were driven off the islands and into northwestern France (known as the Britannia Pennisula, of course  ). They spoke a largely Gaelic/Celtic variety of German. Eventually, William sprung on the weakness of the leadership and disunity of the Angles (the tribes of Germans/Scandinavians that had migrated to the Isles) and conquered Anglia. the russians are the best! Hands down!

August 3, 200619 yr That was not needed. Why do people enjoy bashing every American thing there is, up to its language? August 3, 200619 yr That was not needed. Why do people enjoy bashing every American thing there is, up to its language? That's what I'd like to know. Live and let live, people.
August 3, 200619 yr That was not needed. Why do people enjoy bashing every American thing there is, up to its language? I know what you mean. There's a topic about how we don't use the metric system, there's a topic about how our government is run by a bunch of lunatics, and now there's this. When are you people going to stop? Our language? C'mon, it's starting to sound like some people are just desperate to bash America...
August 3, 200619 yr Yeah, the whole Anti-American got old quick for me. It's like people just pick something about the US and start making fun of it. Even on discussions with American sitcoms recently. 'z0mg, they're all the same!' and 'they're not good blah blah' when pretty much the only internationally acknowledged sitcoms are American. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::
