I have nothing against dell... however

Dell is fine for the ordinary e-mail user. If you ask for a gaming computer from them though it costs and arm and a leg, but that's called buisness and thats also why alot of people buy from newegg and what not.

And here's where the however comes in... one thing I dislike about dell is the way they have the inside of the computer hooked up. Everything is jury rigged and thrown in there with green tabs and you can't interchange anything. The most you can really do is put in some RAM. My sister wanted a CD-RW drive, the dell came with a CD-ROM so I was going to put one in for her, only to find that I can't put on in, so now she has an external, which is just more unneeded clutter on a desk already filled with junk and wires. If you want a new video card in a Dell, good luck with that. They've got little tabs everywhere telling you your about to 'void a warantee' hell, they don't even leave you room in the case for an extra hard drive.

Also, they really try to push merchandise and sucker people. Some guy could get by with just a 2.8 ghz processor and 512mb of RAM to do normal daily stuff, instead Dell tells him he needs 3.5 ghz, and 2 gigs of RAM, along with a $150 video card marked up to $400

Like I said, dell's great for the mom who wants to use msn, but I still personally don't like them one bit. Probably because I'm not a mom wanting to use msn...

Zonda, ive never had any problem with space in the case that came with my dell. Allthough, adding another hard drive was a problem, because i had to completly remove both hard drive bays, in order to add the second hard drive to the empty bay. And while managing to do that i cut my finger 3 times :S.

Anyother installations i have not had problems with though.

I'm going to regret speaking up, I just know it, but... wasn't that a little harsh?

I think he was just joking, parodying a humorous overreaction to a minor problem.

I could be wrong, but I personally saw that post as being purely in jest and have no doubt that the user knew full well that nobody in their right mind would throw a laptop out the window over a battery problem.

Ok, I've poked my proverbial stick into the hornet's nest, you may now flame me...

If you dont take steps to ensure that you're protected, you void all right to complain when stuff goes wrong.

Apparently it isn't just Dell's laptops the Sony batteries were used in, so we could expect more recalls.

I'm surprised they only just did this now, after there have been reports and videos of them bursting in to flames for several months.

The problem could even be more widespread because I believe the Sony laptops batteries are made by Mitsubishi... So any laptop which uses a Mitsubishi battery could also have the fault. Such notebooks include Apple, HP and Lenovo.

Although, HP has claimed "It is a Dell Issue" and that they are not affected by the Investigation.

So what is going on here. Has Sony been knowingly selling dodgy batteries to Dell, or has dell been requesting the batteries to be made cheaply so corners have been cut.

Knowing Sony, I'd guess it was the former :P

Small quote from one of the articles linked in the slashdot thread:

Spokesman Rick Clancy said the companies had conversations in October 2005 and again in February 2006. Discussions were about the problem of small metal particles that had contaminated Lithium-Ion battery cells manufactured by Sony, causing batteries to fail and, in some cases, overheat.

Update: "Apple Battery Recall Official"

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission just made the Apple battery recall official. It'll affect 1.1 million Sony-made batteries in the US alone. Between all the PS3's bad press and these battery recalls, it's not going to be an easy year for Sony, is it?

Looks like I was right about it not just being Dells that got recalled.
