August 28, 200619 yr I can barely use the American system of measurement... Metric would only confuse me more.Considering most Metric conversions are either multiply by 10 or divide by 10, I think even you can do that :P O.O I did not know that.
August 28, 200619 yr wat was with the thing u said on sayin the date day, month, year......they dont...? It was just a small thing I noticed. I think everywhere besides America is day/month/year instead of month/day/year as in America. But I could be wrong. And since we learn/use metric in science and school, I don't see why we need a seperate system. :? I agree. Also I noticed that people use M/D/Y lol.. I find myself always changing it depeding on what number is bigger lol :-#
August 28, 200619 yr Since America is the only country on the face of this Earth that doesn't use metric, I think we need to switch. Metric is so much easier than our standard system. We should also switch to celsius. I think fahrenheit is just a dumbed down version of celsius, a 0-100 scale instead of 0-32. And maybe switch our dates to day/month/year. These are things the rest of the world has, and America is just weird not using them. Anyone agree? Wow, you've really thought this through! You should be the world leader!sarcasm> Seriously, did you ever consider for one tiny moment that it would cost America billions, if not, trillions, of dollars to britishize everything? All the street signs would have to be replaced, all of the Fahrenheit thermometers in America would need to be changed, every single item of packaged food would need to be changed for their expiration dates, weight, etc. America doesn't just change things on whim. GWB doesn't wake up one morning and say to himself "Today, I think I'll make our country conform to the mold that every other country has set!" Not to mention the fact that America is already trillions of dollars in debt. And some people may like The Customary system. And I don't see Ray Bradbury writing a book called "Celsius 232.7777777777778" There's no sig here. Move it along...
August 28, 200619 yr i learned it this way and i'm used to it if somebody changed it to metric i'd be like nuh uh i'm like it this way better I grew up and learned everyting with Belgium Frank, but now it's changed into Euro's...at first it may look a bit stupid but i'm used to it now
August 28, 200619 yr I'll have you know that America is ALWAYS right in everything they do, every other country are just ignorant, poor, and uneducated. //sarcasm I really wouldn't fancy any kind of switch...we would soon be like that global community from the Left Behind series. And I would rather confuse people with my scary, different way of measuring things. I really wouldn't call it an era. It was more of a definitive time period during which dinstinctive characteristics were expressed in similar ways.
August 28, 200619 yr Why are we using temperature as an example? That's terrible! Both F and C are flawed in how they measure temperature. Cold = absence of heat. Absolute zero = -273.15 C. Absolute zero = negative heat? How do we have negative heat? That doesn't make sense. Kelvin ftw!

That's maybe not as hard as it would be to switch America to metric, but it's close. And it seems they're coping with it fine. Me doing staff.
August 28, 200619 yr i learned it this way and i'm used to it if somebody changed it to metric i'd be like nuh uh i'm like it this way better its not hard to change as most people think. For example, last year I switched the way I wrote my e's by just writing one one page paper. This year I have switched from print to cursive. One day the government will give the old switch-a-roo another try, but until then we are stuck.
August 28, 200619 yr We already tried it, nobody liked it. If other countries cared about us switching, they'd help pay for it. Until then, we'll help pay for some of your crap you're doing reguardless, and you'll let us do what we do. The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past. - Me!

Kelvins is great if you're dealing with temperatures that low, but the numbering system is REALLY high if you're talking about the normal temperature outside. And Tigra, I laughed at your viewpoint. I agree somewhat... I'm currently transitioning from a Wizard to a Mage and a Priest to an Archpriest. Lol both are nonexistant in the top 25. Hopefully I can change that. :D

August 28, 200619 yr Am I the only person who writes dates yy/mm/dd when available? You sure are. FREAK! Bill Hicks[/url]":dhj2kan9]Since the one thing we can say about fundamental matter is, that it is vibrating. And since all vibrations are theoretically sound, then it is not unreasonable to suggest that the universe is music and should be perceived as such.

August 29, 200619 yr All the street signs would have to be replaced, all of the Fahrenheit thermometers in America would need to be changed, every single item of packaged food would need to be changed for their expiration dates, weight, etc. This isnt entirely true, here in Britain miles are used on road signs instead of kilometres (dont ask me why) and until recently most food had both measurements of weight so it wouldnt be that difficult to implement the metric system. August 29, 200619 yr First of all, America isn't the ONLY country to use it... We're just the only rich country who uses it. The other countries are Mynamar (near India, Nepal, and Bangladesh in South Asia) and Liberia (a country on the coast of West Africa) Neither are very well-off. They're both dirt-poor. We're among great company, huh? However, being incomprehensible to Europeans aside (at least from all the whining I see on the board, it seems to be) the Imperial system has its merits. Centimeters are too small, and meters are too large. And no sane person uses the other measurement systems. Decimeter, anyone? I'd like to see you spread out your fingers and measure me a decimeter. I can certainly do it with an inch and a foot, but not with a decimeter. No one uses it. I like being 5 foot 8 inches. 1.8{something} meters makes me feel short. As for the fahrenheit scale, 0 was a solution of ammonium chloride, water, and ice. 100 was his body temperature. How hard is it to remember two numbers? 212, and 32. Wow. Isn't that hard? Granted, it's harder than 0 and 100, but it's kinda hard to break the habit of our Fahrenheit scale. Every time I hear "it's 40 degrees celsius" outside, I reflexively think where my coat is. It's kinda hard to break the "40 is cold, 70 is warm" thing. As for the conversion thing, pretty much all of the US containers have metric measurements on em. The cars have "kilometers per hour" on it. What more do you want? As for the date, who cares? Wow. We have a different format. Oh, no! I'm melting! I can't covert a simple number switch that can be comprehended through context! You show that YOU'RE ignorant by thinking that Americans will listen to Europe about their system. I took the time to learn your system, as it's required in international commerce and science. Why can't our nation use our gallons and miles at home? Besides crashing multi-million dollar Mars probes, how has the Imperial System hurt anyone? If we're so ignorant, how come so many people from around the world come to our colleges? If we're so ignorant, why do we have so many successful mega-businesses? Basically, we don't swtch not because we're too lazy, but because we're just used to the way we were brought up. It's not like the system is dysfunctional. I can measure kilogram with 2.2 pounds. Converting is okay. I really don't care. What I DO care about, however, are people who tell me that I should ditch a system that I've grown up with because they say so. On whose authority? I'll use the metric system when I have to, just like you'll use the Imperial system when you have to. If you think that we're stupid because we refuse to change, then you're the naive and ignorant one. People like stability. Change isn't stability. Therefore, we don't like change. Finally, most of Europe switched to the Euro because the Euro is more stable than their "homegrown" currency. Lira, anyone? "I'm gonna go buy a box of cerial, mom!"Okay, honey! "Take the 15000 lira I gave you yesterday!" Notice that the only country with an actually valued currency (England) DIDN'T switch. People will only change if it helps them. Changing to metric will irritate and confuse the idiots who don't know the system. Those idiots have votes. Therefore, NOTHING will happen, and you're just being attention-grabbing and irritating if you whine about it. What's the point of whining if you aren't going to get anything done?
August 29, 200619 yr Oh my God! This topic again?! Get over it!! America uses the customary or imperial or whatever you want to call it. Really, what difference does it make whether we switch or not? We decided to stick with our way. That's what we chose and that's the way it will stay. I see no point in whining over this like some people do. It is stupid to try and say that we NEED to switch. Why? Why do we NEED to? It's not like people are dying because we won't switch... We were brought up using the customary. Not just the people but the country as a whole was brought up with customary. It's almost a part of our heritage... We should not be forced to switch. I swear the topics piss me off...
