I've been watching CNN's special on "Genius-level" people lately and how/why they become "superior" to everyone else. They've shown a lot of talented people (A deaf child who plays Jazz music [piano] with professionals, for example, which I think is craziness :shock:) and whatnot, but I found this, uhh...Interesting.

 

 

 

Apparently, your brain is working on a genius level if you can solve the following problem:

 

 

 

"What is twice of one-tenth of one-fifth of one-tenth of 1,000?"

 

 

 

If you know the answer to that, apparently, you are indeed working on a genius level in your mind. I say I found this "interesting" because I consider the above problem to be more "math" than anything, and I absolutely suck at math and even I could figure that out within a few seconds. ONe of the Ancors on CNN said they figured it out in 3 or 4 seconds...I'd say it took me like 8 or so, but that's besides the point.

 

 

 

Is it just me, or is the word "genius" tossed around a bit liberally, then? :lol: Perhaps I'm smarter than I give myself credit for, but I gaurentee there will be many people here who can figure it out just as fast, if not a bit faster than I did.

 

 

 

You probably shouldn't post the answer unless it's in 1 size font or something. Some people might want to figure it out to see if they are indeed a "genius". :P

If somebody was really that desperate to prove themself a genius when infact they weren't all they'd have to do is copy and paste the answer in the reply box and be able to see the answer. So don't expect anybody to admit they couldn't figure it out.

 

 

 

But yeah I agree with you, you're only a genius if you have actually done something at "genius level". I see to many people on this forum saying they have an i.q of 160 when they can't even spell properly. I don't think your intelligence should be based on math questions, because let's face it some people just aren't good at math.

Yeah, that wasn't too hard at all. You are just dealing with fractions, you should be able to do that when you are 10 or 11 years old.

I wouldn't really consider myself a genius. More or less an idiot savant. For starters, my foot hurts and I forgot why. But I do know it involves kicking.

I would doubt 10 and 11 year olds could do that (most of them, anyways) because of how the question is worded. You have to do the problem backwards, plus fractions, plus devision and finally, addition. :P

 

 

 

It's supposed to prove you're working at a genius level because it's worded all backwards from what a normal math problem usually is. Once you figure out how to do it, it's really easy.

instead of getting confused with 2*1/10*1/5*1/10*1000 it would be easier if you said 1000*1/10*1/5*1/10*2 this way becuase now you see it goes 100,20,2, 4

Actually, the last part is multiplication.. but since multiplication is simply repeated addition, I'll let you get away with it.

 

 

 

To all the people who worked this out - would you be able to work it out if it wasn't written down - if someone just told you it, and they only told you once and you had to remember it?

It's possible that it would be much more difficult if it were spoken, not written. Then you couldn't work backwards, because you'd have to work as it was being said. It's still very possible - you just start off with fractions (uh oh!!) instead of whole numbers.

Well I got the answer reasonably quickly and I'm not a genius (I even failed Higher maths when I was at school!!). How does that work? I guess the media must not be telling the truth the whole time then? Shocking...

It took me around 3 seconds. You just need to know that "of" means multiply. Then you just multiply across.

You probably didn't pay attention to the Dr. Gupta's show or something...there's no way he said that if you can do that question you're working on a genius level. If that's the case, most of our world is working on a genius level, defeating the meaning of the word genius #-o
