How do YOU feel about the Death Penalty

Featured Replies

The only way I would be pro-death would be if they reformed the exicution method. Tie them to a tree so the relitives of the victom could do as they wish to the killer is very high on my list of acceptable reforms.

Heh, I'd like to see that.. Or public beheadings.. Much cheaper than the current method.

You guys are getting too brutal. :P . Killing them is harsh enough.

Lets say they kill your mother. Now what?

Nah. Murder by itself isn't usually good enough. Let's say he raped and murdered her, and he has a prior armed robbery that put the cashier into therapy after being in such a traumatic experience.

I don't feel tuned in tonight. Was that a serious comment?

I don't know, I guess I posted it because it is so redundant that it is funny.

For those who don't understand - an individual deterrent is one which deters the individual from re-offending.

Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.

Well, I'd kill the guy! I really don't care how he dies though.

Thank you 4be2jue for the wonderful sig and avatar!

If someone is caught as a child rapist , murder, ect. and they are found guilty I say keep them in prison, don't kill them.

And I don't mean like most prisons. Don't give them any sort of luxury's. You know, 2 bland meals a day, locked in a blank 9x9 cell with hardly any light. Don't give them a roomate or anyone else to talk to, nothing to do.

Trust me, doing that for the rest of your life is much, much worse than just dying. And much more deserved for scum like that.

If they were a child murderer, give them one roommate in their small cell. Make their roommate an ex gang member or someone who use to kill huge guys with tattoos.

I wonder what would happen to the pedophile...

Oh, the expense is easy to figure out.

The actual execution is not that expensive, but it's the lawyer costs and such that the State incurs in the prosecution and appeals of those on Death Row. Lethal Injection is cheap, lawyers are what sucks up the money.

If I became a lawyer, I'd do some charity and make it free for a bit :-w .

Seriously, I think they should do something with them rather than letting them sit there rotting away while they stare at the TV. Maybe put them to work like someone suggested?

Noble, but charity doesn't pay the bills.

I agree with the poster. If it is proven that you have taken the life of another, you deserve death. I don't want my tax dollars going to giving some murderer cable.

I've never felt fully comfortable one way or another with this issue. If there was an infallible way to prove someone committed murder, I would probably for the death penalty. There can always be errors though, and that really has kept me from choosing one side or the other.

Putting a guy in his cell as a roomate to beat up or kill the pedophile is comepletely pointless. Nadril just said it would be better to have him be in prison all his life not just be in there a week then get murdered by an "ex-gang member who kills big guys with tatoos"? What the hell is that sposed to mean? You don't like big guys with tatoos?

I agree with Nadril..I mean if i was gonna be executed exactly 1 week from now yes I would be sh****** myself. I wouldn't mind dying BUT knowing exactly when its gonna happen and how its gonna happen. Terrible. But it would be much worse sitting ina 9x9 cell for the rest of your life. Although personally. I would hate it so much I would eventually find a way to hang myself. -.- So then they would take me too a padded room...for the rest of my life...wear maybe i can tear out some pad and choke to death. ::'

I'm for the Code of Hammurabi. That was my basic stance in the last topic and it hasn't changed much.

I am against the death penalty for many practical reasons (innocent people killed, more expensive than imprisonment, applied more during cases of murders of white people than murders of black people, does not work as a deterrant to crime).

I also think that morally it is wrong... because revenge is a decadent emotion that won't actually solve anything.

Finally, I thought the point that Ghostranger made about the families of victims wanting closure is an interesting one. Though I'd ask whether it is closure or just revenge? Many months ago I read about victims of crimes meeting the perpetrator and apparently this helped them to find a sense of closure once they understood the reasons that the crime was committed. Though I don't remember details about this program, or about the severity of the crimes committed in it.. it makes me wonder whether the death penalty will bring real closure for the families, or whether understanding is what is really necessary.

For it is the greyness of dusk that reigns.

The time when the living and the dead exist as one.

I don't know why or where it came from dusqi, but for some reason I lean heavily on the side of you and mad with this issue. :P My two problems are, like I mentioned - that point about the victims family. But it's also fair to say that it was only one instance and who knows where their opinion stands in the grand scheme of things.

Your point about revenge makes me think. How do you think we define the difference between revenge and justice? Obviously the example about the family seems more revenge based, but at the same time - do we believe that capital punishment can be more justice than revenge? I know the DA for our district fairly well and he seeks the maximum no matter what it is, because he believes it is what's just. If it's the death penalty, that's the most just. If it's life, that's what's just. Is it justice or is it revenge? I don't know...

Too many issues for me to think about tonight. :P

And how expensive could it be to shoot them with a single bullet in the head then burn the body and dump it in some mass-grave? Go cheap like the people you're executing. Doesn't have to be multi-million dollar humane deaths all the time.

Give 'em to Scouts earning their merrit badges! Sure they may not be the best at aiming, but appart from shipping charges its FREE.

Pionering, Firemenchip, Riffle, Archery, Citizenship,....

The killing part isn't all that expensive. For some reason I'm thinking it costs $80, not including the last meal. That is just for the shots.

The reason it "costs" so much is from lawyer fees. It takes a lot of extra court room time to get someone on death row.

I think capital punisment (execution) is a medieval thing in a modern world. The worst offenders could be put to forced labor; At least they are of some use then.

Well, what about the people who already do forced labor? Coal miners are just some of the many.

In my opinion, i completley support the death penalty. 'Cause if I were to kill someone right now, I would accpet the death penalty if it was brought upon me. In the words of Ron White:

In Texas, we have the death penalty and we USE it!

Death penalty should only be administered to the lunatics who mass murder or cerial kill and dont care or feel regret. Otherwise the rest have a possible place in society if taken through the system right.

Some people are like slinkies, normally they are dull, but they always give you a smile

when you push them down a flight of stairs.

I'm against it, if they did something bad enough to warrant a death penalty; let em rot I say.

"Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

i totally agree. imagine spending your life in an indonesian prison. (sorry to any indonesians out there but some australians [where i'm from] have been imprisoned in indonesia lately and thier prisons look/are made out to be a terrible place to live)

Indonesian prisons are Hilton hotels compared to some prisons in the world. Watch some documents where the reporters actually sneaked into Syrian, North Korean and Nigerian prisons. You won't believe that another human being could treat you like that even for the slightest crime. (Systematic flogging with iron [bleep]e-empowered whips, removal of fingers for asking why you are there, prolonged starvation, using fire on you...)

After a serial killer spent a few WEEKS in the worst prisons of the world he would beg for the life of himself to work in a coal mine for the rest of his life, failing that he'd probably just take his own life. He produces energy for the country and has practically no living costs other than food (and probably a tent).

The death penalty is morally wrong, because "an eye for an eye" will leave us all blind. How can you condemn a person for a crime, and punish him by doing that exact same action to him?

Furthermore, the death penalty is irreversible. You can't be "un-death penaltied". Especially with new forensic methods like DNA-stuff, people serving life time were freed because they were convicted for a crime they didn't commit. That would be a bit tricky when put to death, now wouldn't it?

So I think they should be sent to a REAL prison (here in the Netherlands they are Hilton hotels with tv, internet and libraries) and be put to work (e.g. hard manual labor!) to be of service to the community.
