In recent months i've realised the value of the words "I Promise."

 

More importantly, i've realised the value of breaking a promise.

 

 

 

Simple question, do you make a promise and keep it no matter what?

I don't make a promise unless I'm 100% sure without a doubt that I can fulfill it (excepting for exceptional circumstances)... of course that means very few promises, but that just makes them all the better.

I think it is unreasonable to expect anyone to hold themselves to something regardless of what may befall them. That would just be punishing them for an oversight on their part, it is possible to break a promise without being thoughtless or uncaring. That said, it is obviously also possible to break one uncaringly.

 

 

 

For this reason I see a promise not as something that is set in stone, but more as a statement by a person of how much something means to them. Something which they would like to commit to but shouldn't be held to should unforeseen circumstances arise.

I do my best to hold to every promise I make. It sucks when someone breaks a promise but not everyone has a good memory (I'll admit mine isn't very good).

yeah, thats true. i was just thinking, sometimes it seems like we've lost the value of what a promise really means. There's circumstances you can fight past to keep your word and one's you just can't, but I think half of it's the trust you get from someone knowing you promised and you held your word.

 

 

 

I've had mates say "yeah promise ill be there" and then just buggered off with another mate or something, it's times like that it feels like it's lost its meaning

I can't add anything more to that. The meaning of the word has been raped, but I still try not to give out promises unless I can fulfill them. A promise means you are COMMITTED to doing something, not "Sounds interesting, maybe I'll turn up at 7pm and maybe I wont", i.e. a light version of saying "no thanks".

I never really promise anything. In my opinion, somebody's word should be believed, without any need of swaring or promising. This way, I value much more trusty people than people who make promises and keep them.

I can't recall off the top of my head ever saying "I promise" to anyone. Maybe that means I value it highly, or not at all. I don't really know. :P

I try not to make promises because I am very unreliable.

When I say "I promise" I mean that it will now become my number one priority and I will do everything within my power to do whatever it is I said I'd do. After you break a promise or two it just gets hard to have people trust you.

I made a promise to make 12+ people free pixel sigs.

 

 

 

I made that promise in July this year and im still working...

 

 

 

Its the hardest promise ive ever made and its driving me insane... :wall:

Anyways I forgot the last time I made a promise. If friends say, make a promise for this and that, then I'll probably break it.

 

 

 

A true promise is when a person is willing to make it, not by force etc. , or offer it out from their hearts. To me, anything else is not really worth it.

 

 

 

And yes, some people have forced promises on me, which I will half-heartedly remember.

I've promised a friend of mine quite a bit lately. And she knows well enough that I'll deliver. Even if they are somewhat odd promises to have made :lol:

Unfortunately, the term "I promise" has been diluted by people, including myself, by over-using it. Usually though, I can tell the difference when someone actually means it, and then they'll keep it.

People these days are so untrustworthy. Words, feelings and trust is thrown around and abused like it means nothing.

 

 

 

It just sickens me, so i never make a promise i can't keep but if i make one, i will not break it because that could hurt someone or break someone's trust, and i hate what it feels like when someone does that to you.
