First ever try at Photo Manipulation... C/C

Well, lets see what the public thinks since my family likes it :anxious:

These are all pictures that I took myself from various places.

I'll include some background and descriptions.

A couple favorites:

I took this picture during spanish class. The phrase "To be or not to be"

kept ringing in my ears, so I decided to immortalize the inspiration.

Then manipulate it :P.

From the sig I made an avatar:

This picture was taken when my family went house looking in some fancy place.

You had to pay to get in to look at the houses..

In one house's backyard there was this very colorful leaf off of a beautiful plant.

The coloring was simply remarkable, so I saved the memory.

And the avvy to accompany it:

Then there's the sig and avatar that I currently have on.

I was sitting with some friends watching the rain, and I noticed the drops hitting the pool of water were impacting quite nicely.

Took a little time, but the drop placement in the pic couldn't be better.

Believe it or not, this picture was not manipulated into being black and white.

Those were the actual colors present. Here's the original picture, unedited:

Hope you all like ::'

That last picture looks cool and I love how you manipulated it. The others are cool too. Better than I could ever dream of doing.

for a free program just like photoshop try paint.net, very good and free, so uberly exelent value for money and has nearly all the features of photoshop, minus the variable filters (so great for manips, not as good for sig making) and the set out is simple and easy to use =)

ill find a link, 1 sec

http://www.getpaint.net/download.html

...I don't see many manipulations. All you've done is applied a filter. :?

The "To Be" is just an invert.

The Plant is just a rotate and a filter. (Oh, and a crop)

The last one you've just upped the contrast and cropped it.

:-s

Yeah I don't really think you can call these a photo manipulation...

I sugest you try working with a larger idea in mind, and don't limit your self to 1 stock image. I've have (and seen) photo manips with upwards of 5 and 6 stocks in them.

I'm testing out some new things in GIMP. Layering is interesting. I'll post some things and see if you like them a little later.

Well. I'll post some progress, and see if I can get some feedback.

Here are the two original pics I used:

(took myself):

IMG_2440.jpg

(^ Took this backpacking last summer... an amazing sight ^)

(and one I found on google):

Sunset.jpg

What I did was crop, resize, and filtered (film grain) in Photoshop, and

layered in GIMP. THis is what I have to far:

Anyone have any ideas of what I could do to improve and finish this?

And, I am wondering how you make text like this:

beamo12.gif

and this:

zaquier3.gif

(note, those two were not my work... although I wish they were ::' )

Help appreciated :)

In regards to your latest work:

It's the same thing. You've just put one photo ontop of the other, set it to something like lighten/soft light, flattened it and added a filter.

You can do more. Brushing for adding depth or making a particular thing stand it is common. Do more with a manip.

And, I am wondering how you make text like this:

Simply highlight the letter(s) you want to be a different colour and change the colour of it.

and this:

Usually with the text wrap (or it might be warp, I don't know).

Something that is messed up with GIMP is the text. Whenever I try and make text, GIMP closes and gives me the "send error report" message.

Any answers? -.-

I hate TIF's definition of a manip when all people do are add a few filters to a stock and change layer styles. Real manips are the ones with as Nad said 5 or 6 stocks in them, changed, manipulated and combined to form a whole new piece.

Well, considering this is the first time I have even considered doing anything of this sort, do you have anything constructive to add? No? Okay, bye then.

He gave plenty of constructive information. Just doing the same thing over again, in this situation - just doing a filter, doesn't get you anywhere.

I, and i'm sure JR, do not think that this being your first "manip" is an excuse. You can learn things before you post.

It's true, I can learn on my own, but I'd like to get help from a community. Mainly specific things to add/change in my work, and definitions to this lingo you artists use :?.

Also, Cad, I've seen some of your work, and it's quite nice. Would you happen to know of a tutorial or something of that sort? Perhaps someone could post links to different sites that have topics like this.
