Thoughts on Punk vs. Emo Music

Well, given that the definition of Emo is very debatable, with sub-genres such as emocore and screamo, it's very difficult to analyze. Though most people do agree that emo is a sub-genre of punk itself. It seems as time progresses it's nearly impossible to label any band as a certain genre. Look at all of them closely tied to punk: hardcore punk, horror punk, Anacho-punk, Christian punk, crust, garage, Oi!, psychedlic punk, death punk, pop punk, DIY punk, politico-punk, emo, emocore, screamo, skacore, ska punk, reggae-punk, psychobilly, rockabilly, alt-county, post-hardcore, alt-hardcore, celtic-punk, funkcore, not to mention all the cross-genres with metal and hardcore.

All this to say: just listen to what you like. I've got over 350 bands on my hard drive that I consider "punk". Some bands are on the "popish" side (such as Best Interest, Billy Talent, Alexisonfire), some quite hardcore (such as F-Minus, The Unseen, Straightfaced), and everything in between. There's certain sub-genres I don't care for in general (such as old-school-UK-style, including new stuff like Artic Monkey), but I'm sure there's a band or 2 in every that I like. It's a case by case basis...you either like a band or you don't.

I like you :P

Real punk = The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Buzz[roosters]. (To name a few.)

Yup. "Real" punk as its regarded, is the stuff from the 70s and 80s when the anarchist movement came into play. Most people just seem to think any 4-piece with strumming and distortion is punk these days...most of the stuff in the charts is pop punk and emo punk sadly...

There's so many sub genres of punk that you can't compare it to another style so close to itself. I mean, most of the stuff in the charts is emo-punk.

Emo (at least these days as its in its third wave) is simply emotion fueled music - "emo" bands like Dashboard, FSF and Jimmy Eat World...it's not all that my chemical romance stuff in the charts and it's not all about dieing and crying in the corner. Most of it's full band acoustic.

At least, that's what I gather. Feel free to slate me on how From First To Last are teH em0 g0dz omFG

While it's hard to argue against this, as these bands had an integral part (at least in terms of popularity) in the beginnings of punk rock, I think it somewhat depends on where/when you come from. My first introductions to punk were in mid 80's when I started skating...listening to Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Exploited, Agnostic Front, 7 Seconds, Dead Kennedys, The Cramps. However, I didn't really get into it until I started listening to The Descendents, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, so for me those are "real punk rock". It's just a matter of what I like and a certain amount of nostalgia.

I must say I've opened up my tastes a bit in recent years (I used to be fairly strict in style I liked). It's amazing the number of good bands out there that are crossing genres to make interesting new sounds. I like what bands like Against Me! (folky), Flogging Molly (celtic), and Bigwig (metal-ish) are doing right now. I also like quite a bit of the screamo stuff...I think Aiden is a great band.

Another incredible aspect of current times is how easy it is to find new music these days. Back in the day, we all pretty much listened to the same 20-30 bands (at most). With Mydisgrace (saw that term for myspace recently...thought it was funny) there are so many bands it's overwhelming. I have a list of ~100-150 punk bands I've written down to check out (just added Time Again...very good, BTW...thanks TheEmoSanta)

Depends what you classify as Punk. If your talking about bands like The Sex Pistols then i agree punk is better. If your talking about bands like Greenday who are not really punk then i disagree.

agreed-green day is not punk. there old work was though, but it was quickly morphed into pop :?

good charlotte isnt really punk either, there ok but i dont think there really punk-mainly pop :o

dont call emos bad. emos and emo music are hard to categorize, but its very offensive if u talk them down just because they think other things :( . (im not emo)

punk ftw though!!!!! \m/-.-\m/

I was very worried that the kids had completely lost it!

Kids? I don't know if you were referring to me, but I've not been a kid/minor for a while.

not aimed at anyone specific, but I must admit I was assuming a little...

Seems most round here are pretty darn young (tho maybe not so much in the Music and Movies area).

Just to clairfy, by the way, i'm 18  .

To me one of the only "true punk" bands left that I like is bad religion. Their lyrics, unlike a lot of "punk" bands out today actualy mean something, and are well writen. A great band in a genre i'm not the most interested about.

You're talking about political punk. Lyrics don't mean they're a punk band, i could whop out a ukelele and sing about how the government is screwing me over and that wouldn't constitute as punk...

Also, I don't recall Sex Pistols ever selling out. Unlike someone ~_~

I listen to "Emo" music once in a while, but mostly stick to metal and punk (New age i.e Billy Talent). I think "Emo" bands just put more feeling into their songs instead of just writing them in 5 mins. Although I am not "Emo" I don't find any of "their" music bad or anything, MCR is quite good the only bands I don't like is the "emo" bands that just throw verses together consisting of cutting and so forth and just sing it, most emo bands just think about what they are singing then others. I'm not a big fan of the original punk, just the new age.

I was actually just taking a pop at the people who moan on about what is and isn't punk. The same people who think that they are more hardcore than person X because they listen to so many bands that no one has ever heard of. The same peopl who think that what they listen to is the only 'real' punk music and that everyone else just likes poser music.

The kind of attitudes that come forth on every thread about punk music.

Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.

Hell, that happens in almost EVERY thread here in the Music section. Just look at the "Whos the better drummer" thread. People try to discuss two drummers that are in popular bands, and some people feel the need to flame them for even mentioning those drummer's names. Sad :/

Metal fans, check out my band!

Emo music is not punk music, and I am outraged by anyone who thinks different.

Punk bands have their roots in 60's bands such as The Velvet Underground and The Who, and furthermore, draw inspiration from movements such as that of Glam Rock, epitomised by acts like T-Rex and Bowie. Punk as I know it is defined by acts such as Ramones, Iggy and The Stooges, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Buzz[roosters], Talking Heads, Stranglers and the list is endless.

Thats punk music, and its miles better than emo... which is more pop than anything. I disagree that its all about "wanting to die" as someone put it, and I won't criticise anyone for listening to it, because at the end of the day, if they enjoy it, then thats what music is made for - fans enjoyment.

Its just not my cup of tea.
