1_man_army
LONDON, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko, poisoned in London three weeks ago, died on Thursday, the hospital treating him said. "Litvinenko died at the University College Hospital at 9:21 p.m. (2121 GMT) ..., " a spokesman for the hospital said, reading a statement. "He was seriously ill when he was admitted to UCH on Friday November 17 and the medical team at the hospital said it did everything possible to save his life," he said. The critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin had said he fell ill after meeting two Russians at a hotel. He had been investigating the killing of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, also a vocal critic of Putin, who was gunned down at her Moscow flat on Oct. 7. Britain's anti-terrorism police were called in to investigate the case after doctors determined last week his illness was caused by poison. Litvinenko's friends accuse the Kremlin of orchestrating a plot to poison him, but Russia has dismissed the allegation as "nonsense". http://today.reuters.com/news/newsarticle.aspx?type=TopNews&storyID=2006-11-24T005912Z_01_L23515828_RTRUKOC_0_US-BRITAIN-POISONING.xml&WTmodLoc=Home-C2-TopNews-TopNews-3 It seems that since Putin took over in Russia it has been going backwards and this seems to be another indication of it. Its believed that Litvinenko was killed by the FSB (formerly KGB) over his claims that the FSB ordered the killing of Boris Berezovsky, the assasination of Anna Politkovskaya (who both held powefull position in Russian society and were vocal critics of Putin) and the possible KGB involvement in 1999 Russian apartment building bombing (which killed almost 300 people) in order to re-enter Checnya (which Russia did despite no evidence of Chechen involvement. Litvinenko's doctors first thought that he was poisoned using Thalium (which was previously used in rat poison) however, no traces were found in his blood. It is now suspected that an unknown complex poison was used which many suggest points to FSB involvement due to its vast resources. This whole affair reminds me of the assasination of Georgi Markov who was killed in London after he was poisoned using Ricin which was delivered via an umbrella with a Ricin vial in its tip. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Litvinenko http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_apartment_bombings http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_Berezovsky http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgi_Markov He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. - Aeschylus (525 BC - 456 BC)

KCHughes
Going backwards? Russia is better off now economically and socially than it has been in its entire existence. And you surely can't forget the Beslyan school killings by Chechen extremists and the Moscow Theatre bombing? Yeah, Russia had NO reason to re-enter Chechnya... the russians are the best! Let me remind you that before Putin there was Boris Yeltsin, the most incompetent leader Russia has ever had, who got Russia INTO the Chechnya situation in the first place, who was never in office because he was always sick, who allowed for free-for-all laissez-faire to turn Russia into a nation full of Mafias. Yeah, Russia was great before Putin. the russians are the best! Hands down!
Bubsa
We don't know for certain yet that he was assassinated, but yeah, it's about as likely as me using smeg in a post. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.

Necromagus
I would like to thank many people. My doctors, nurses and hospital staff who are doing all they can for me; the British police who are pursuing my case with vigor and professionalism and are watching over me and my family. I would like to thank the British government for taking me under their care. I am honored to be a British citizen. I would like to thank the British public for their messages of support and for the interest they have shown in my plight. I thank my wife, Marina, who has stood by me. My love for her and our son knows no bounds. But as I lie here, I can distinctly hear the beating of wings of the angel of death. I may be able to give him the slip but I have to say my legs do not run as fast as I would like. I think, therefore, that this may be the time to say one or two things to the person responsible for my present condition. You may succeed in silencing me but that silence comes at a price. You have shown yourself to be as barbaric and ruthless as your most hostile critics have claimed. You have shown yourself to have no respect for life, liberty or any civilized value. You have shown yourself to be unworthy of your office, to be unworthy of the trust of civilized men and women. You may succeed in silencing one man but the howl of protest from around the world will reverberate, Mr. Putin, in your ears for the rest of your life. May God forgive you for what you have done, not only to me but to beloved Russia and its people. 1_man_army
i just heard on the news that its official he died from radiation poisoning... Yeah it was just confirmed on the News that he was killed by radiation poisoning and that "major doses" of Polonium 210 were found in places he had been. I think if there was any doubt before that this was the KGB then this just removed it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6181050.stm He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. - Aeschylus (525 BC - 456 BC)

Hobgoblin11
I know it's probably not the time or the place to say this, but watching the news they had a shot of him before he was poisoned, and he had hair. He looked completely different before he was poisoned, and in my opinion, he looked much more like a Russian spy without any hair. Sorry, just had to point this out. On a more serious note, this is extremely worring. What did he know that made someone want him dead? We don't know for sure yet, but it was most likely the Russian government that wanted him dead, but why? Oh, and Bubsa, it has nowbeen changed status to a murder investigation. Polonium 210 is not a chemical you can just dig out of the ground, it can either be made by inerting Bismuth (Bi 209) into a nuclear reactor, or by extracting the immensely small quantity of it that exists in Uranium ores. It is also an alpha emitter, which means that it has high powers of ionisation, but only over ver small ranges. This means that you basically have to ingest it for it to hurt you. Now you tell me how else you could manage to get this extremely rare chemical inside you, short of someone placing it in your food/drink/whatever. I feel also for the staff that treated him, as they may now be at risk from radiation poisoning, something which they were not aware of until very late on. 99/99 Fletching, 99/99 Cooking, 96/99 Strength
BlueLancer
I must agree with the above poster, without hair he reminds me of the character Voldemort, too much. If you're not sure who that is, search it up on google and then compare the two pictures. I watched Putin commenting it at the Helsinki EU-Russian summit on a few news channels, he looked very nervous though with no signs of perspiration or anything. I wouldn't say it's beyond belief he would have a stake in either one of the murders. Either way, it's probably not a nice situation to be in. You're in front of the cameras with billions of people going to watch what you say, and you're being directly accused of murder.

Doomster
The guy is going to be a bigger embarrasment to them dead, than alive. There must surely be less suspicious ways (eg. arranging an accident), unless whoever was behind it, wanted to send a message to anyone else that they could get to them wherever and whenever.
