Guttural Vocals?

megadedhed

Recommended Posts

Death grunts, cooke monster vocals, death metal voices, or whatever you want to call them.

I've recently discovered that I can do the guttural vocal technique, and im wondering if anyone else can...

If you can,

Got any tips?

Well, not everyone can scream, or grunt w/e you want to call it. My brother's friends got some new band (they sounded quite cool, considering they're 15 years old), but the grunter was nothing. Sounded like he was burping his lyrics in the mic.

OH I see now. Well, my tip is to try to mix it up a bit with the gutturals and the raspier screams. Don't just do all of one, it gets really monotonal. Just thinking off the top of my head, Shadows Fall does a pretty good job of using the gutturals sparingly to add extra emphasis to certain parts of their songs.

Metal fans, check out my band!

Depending if you just want a flat out scream or a deep grunt [as in a lot of death metal] or maybe just a very rhaspy grunt [black metalish] I'd imagine the technique would be a bit different.

I've never really "tried" to do it. I'd think that a lot of it is just finding what you can do the best. You really have to have the right kind of voice to do some of the deep growls though.

Guttural vocals are awesome. Like NATHAN EXPLOSION!

I try to do them, and hurt my throat. But I can do it a bit. woo hoo!

Nathan: No! We never drink before a show! NEVER.

Murderface: I've been drinkin' all day!

Rest of band: Me too, mes too, me too.

Nathan: ... ... Me too.

Screaming isn't music, it's a headache.

How about someone sings for once instead of killing what's left of music?

Supermonk, proving you wrong since 1992.

(Chocolate) milk before singing. It'll build up the slime lining your throat, which'll make your throat feel less 'raw'.

Depends on what you like. If you really into country music, screaming doens't really fit there, no. But sometimes it really adds to the music, if you have a good scream  Try for example the chorus of The Hunger by The Distillers. And they're not even metal

Obviously you're not into modern metal and/or stuck in the past, like many music "aficionados" are.

Naturally, music is constantly evolving and changing. Best bet is to just live with it. Otherwise you'll just be another one of "those" guys....you know, the ones that act like their choice of music defines their character, and enjoy railing on everyone else that doesn't agree. :|

I guess I am stuck in the past, even though I never was there.

I'm only 14, so I wasn't even around when classic rock was around.

I like older music and pretty much hate all new music. Yeah, I hate hip-hop, rap, death/black/blue/macaroni/whatever you want to call it metal, newer "rock," punk, and "emo." There is maybe 1 band that I like that is new.

And I guess I am living with it, because I have to listen to the crap everyday on the bus and everywhere I go. And no I won't hate you if you do like it, because if I hated everyone who did, well I would hate pretty much everyone.

I totally agree with you on rap, but to group most metal in the same area would be kind of a stretch.

Well, I do like some older metal, the softer stuff. I don't like anything with screaming in it, which most new metal consists of.

believe it or not... i cant think of any rock stuff without screaming in it... even softer rock...

besides, guttorals were invented in 1954, BEFORE the creation of rock and roll, in a blues song....

There is a difference between singing loudly and screaming...

I can name you at least 50 classic rock songs that don't have screaming by looking at my Itunes list, heck, probably off the top of my head.

And I honestly don't care if it was made before rock, I just don't like it.

If used correctly in a song, guttural vocals can be so much more musical than simply singing along.

Guttural vocals are the "extreme" end of "singing". If used well they can bring a good song into a great song.
