January 12, 200719 yr This is probably one of my most extreme views, but I'm an advocate of 'love' as something that grows, not forced. Perhaps for love to grow there needs to be force. Besides it's there tradition, no matter what you think it's been going on for hundreds of years. You can't throw that away because you don't like it.
January 12, 200719 yr There is only one absolute in the world, and i quote: That's a self-refuting statement. Is it absolutely true that there is only one absolute in the world? If so, then that makes two absolutes, and your statement is void. Ah, but can you prove it that it is the only absolute? There may be more, we just havent though of more yet. Yeah, I suppose you could say something about 'The following statement is true' but as I say, thats not very far going. Perhaps the better term is base absolutes. So I suppose its the only known absolute in the world. Hang on, can we even prove that? My brain hurts. :( ~ W ~

January 12, 200719 yr Author I made this thread because I remember a Hindu seminar I took a part of. I wrote something along the lines of 'arranged marriage doesn't deserve to exist now, it belongs in the middle ages.' Teacher was pissed off  Good thing we don't get marks for that :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::
January 12, 200719 yr You might want to describe "work," Darkmage. If a marriage kept together by the threat of violence is your idea of a working marriage, you can have it. I want a wife that loves me, not one that is afraid of me. And, yes, violence is what keeps the arranged marriage crowd working. Otherwise, what happens if the daughter does not want to marry the man? When you are learning, you are growing. If you stop learning, you stop growing. If you stop growing, you die. Train hard, eat fried chicken, and take a one-a-day. (And cook that broccoli 'til it's yella and pour cheese all over it)

If x generation did not like it, why would they force it on y generation (kids)? You might want to describe "work," Darkmage. Most of them actually love each other and junk. I will admit that there are quite a few that do not, but I would not call it barbaric. I am in no way supporting arranged marriages. Apart from you didn't demonstrate the existance of an absolute, you simply stated that it existed.

January 12, 200719 yr So you're telling me if I have a wife I have to always be with her? What do you want? A weekend wife? I don't think you understand. Look at your parents. Is your dad always with your mom? NO. HE. CAN. BE. BY. HIMSELF.

January 12, 200719 yr I'm from India most likely my parents would pick my girl but they'll have to ask I I'm in love with her or not. Ya, arranged marriage is in my culture but most people in my culture follow their heart. :

January 13, 200719 yr Enslave? An arranged marriage is not slavery, get your facts straight. This is slavery http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enslavement Arranged marriages are just like normal marriages in most ways.Pick the culture where females are essentially slaves in their own home once married (in an arranged marrage). I don't really see a difference to real slavery. Kinda like working for "slave labour" (ie: getting paid next to nothing for a lot of work - like illegals in a lot of American businesses) but without getting paid for it.

Because there's nothing about forced/arranged marriages that is respectful to those involved. So why should we respect it? As far as I'm concerned, culture has no meaning when it comes to right and wrong.
