Should AUS and NZ remove the Union Jack from their flag?

Featured Replies

If we did become a republic, things like this wouldn't happen. In relation to the flag, I don't think we should change it. It shows our heritage and shows where we came from. If it was re-designed though, I'd like to see something like the coat of arms.

As a brit, I think it should stay, because from what I gather Aus is basically people originating from Britain, and its important to stick to your roots. Not long ago they tried to add black stripes into the UK flag because of how multicultural it is, its an absolute joke. So yeah, I think aus should stick to its roots, god knows i'd prefer to live there than here!...at least, as long as you stop calling us Poms ;)

Well being a Scotsman the Union Jack is a contentious issue here too. My feeling is if thats what the people want then it should be removed, the past is just that - the past.

Anyway I don't think Australia removing the Union Jack is that big a thing anyway -the stupid thing is despised in most of Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland plus parts of Wales (all of those individual flags make up the Union Jack). Plus you guys are no longer under British rule so its not too big an issue.

Wait, if I understood you correctly, there's people against the Union Jack's design and how it presents the Scottish and Irish cross, and how it doesn't present any symbol related to Northern Ireland? :-s

All you Scots can stop boo hooing as soon as you stop claiming stuff on the NHS paid for using my English taxes. Either you are part of the United Kingdom or your not, and if not then you should have total devolution and a presidency. Until that happens you should be proud to fly the Union flag as a symbol of your countrys status on this little island.

Hold your horses, I wasn't giving a personal view, I was just trying to explain how the Union Jack is perceived by some here, and trying to relate that to the issue brought up in the topic. English taxes pfft if you want to be like that, Scottish oil.

So some Brits can join the conversation, and still staying with the Union Jack theme. What do you think about incorporating Wales somehow into the British flag? I'm not sure if Wales is still considered a Principality though.

There's red on it right? Thats the Wales part? No need to .com/yqlhwf]deface it with a dragon.

The Cross of St. George is red lol. Though you could say the white outlining the English cross is symbolic of Wales, even though it isn't. :)

To be fair a dragon would look slightly out of place in a flag made up of several crosses. :D

Wales needs a cross.

The flag that represents Wales is actually the banner of the Tudor monarchy who were on the throne of England from 1489 until the death of Queen Elizabeth I. The present royal family are direct descendants of the Tudor line, which validates Prince Charles' claim to be Prince Of Wales. King Henry VII ordered that his banner should represent the people of Cambria, which is mistakenly called Wales.

Nah.. The Union Jack isn't swear allegience or anything, it's just respecting it's father, per se.

The code in my sig should say 1032 not 0132.

I think that they should keep the union jack on their flag because it is such a rich part of those countries history's...plus it looks good on 'em :D

Pretty much that I cant see why they would want to get rid of it :-k

Probably because if Australia (or any British "colony") declares independance - they legally have to remove the Union Jack from the flag. It's not a matter of "showing roots" it's there because it pretty much needs to be.

Australia has much more British Migrants than other areas such as Asia and Greece. Although it is hard to believe, knowing how many of them we have over here , it is true.

Just start designing :dunno: Not like it'd be THAT hard - even simple stuff works.

i didnt say anything about convicts, i said a lot of people who migrated there were originally British - convicts or otherwise ;) - and thats why the flag's on there

logo.jpg

I don't think so.

If we do we would have to change out whole flag which won't go down well with many people, including me.

Everyone in Autralia is used of this flag, so I don't see any need to change it
