Acne

I used Accutane, but it is some hard core stuff. Causes depression pretty badly, and dries you out a lot. I mean a lot.

Yes, that is what they claim, but there is really no depression associated with Accutane. In fact, recently there has been a study which reported no findings that linked depression to Accutane.

The reason the "depression" warning was first introduced in the late 1990s/early 2000 was because Rep. Bart Stupak's son killed himself and his father believed it was because of the medication he was taking. He felt it necessary to make it a personal vendetta to add the "depression" side-effect to the medication. What many neglected to mention was that his son was a constant drug/alcohol abuser, so there goes that.

This is a heavy-duty drug, just as Indy said, though. For men it is much easier to take than women, who have to have a pregnancy test and wait one month before taking it, and who have to take blood tests every month to monitor your body. There is heavy dryness involved, along with possible rashes, back pain, headaches, nose bleeds, hair loss, and a plethora of other symptoms. This is the sort of "last resort" when it comes to acne treatment but it's a 50% chance it will work.

The way acne medication is usually prescribed is by giving antibiotics first such as Tetracycline, Erythromycin, and Minocycline. If that doesn't work, then it's onto topical medications of the same form of antibiotic. There's really no over-the-counter medication or solution which will be as effective as prescription. Benzoyl peroxide seems to help if you apply it regularly.

Just be aware that acne is genetic and hormonal, so food, stress, and such things do not affect it (or at least there have been no findings of it). You will grow out of it, but if you want a quick fix, you won't really find one. Each of these medications are taken over months at a time until you see an effect.

Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that it causes birth defects in children, so men and women must use at least two forms of contraceptives to ensure that no procreation happens. It's actually government regulated through the iPledge system.

And this stuff is legal? Sounds pretty potent. Is there any specific chemical in it that causes all that stuff or just everything combined?

It's a high dosage of retin-A (Vitamin A). We take vitamin A in every day, but in high concentrated dosages such as this there are some side effects to the body.

When I was taking it my face was hardcore dry. Not regular "oh man I feel dry", it was tight, and flaky, and my lips were chapped the entire time I was on the medicine. I'd sit there at night with a thing of Vaseline and keep putting it on around the mouth area. It hurt like hell whenever I opened my mouth, because the corners of my mouth would be dried and would break and bleed. All that wasn't that bad, I could deal with it. I was supposed to go see the doctor again if the side effects became too serious, but it was working and I didn't want to stop. What I couldn't deal with was another side effect (I am guessing, since it happened while I was on it). It was called Dermography or something, anyways it translated into "Skin Writing". You could literally write on my skin by just dragging a fingernail over it. Normally when you drag your fingernail over your skin it makes a little white line, I guess of dead skin cells. When you did it on my skin, the line would get really red, it would push out about a mm, and would get about 2mm wide. I could literally write on my skin. I wrote my name on my hand and it stayed like that for about 10 minutes. Which turned out to be a stupid thing to do, seeing as how every line itches. My whole body ended up itching actually, just from wearing clothes. By the second day I not moving at all, and just sitting in the bathtub full of water. The third day I was on the verge of bursting into tears, my mom took me to the hospital that night. This was only about 4 years ago when I was 16  . Some medicine fixed it up pretty much right away.

So it kind of sucked, but it did work.

Ya, im rarely bothered by acne, i think it must be genetics.

Yeah, it seems to be that way. I had a bit, no worries now though really. ::' As for a cure? Ask a doctor, like someone previously posted. Time always helps, althogh its the suckiest 'cure' there is.

I used to suffer from pretty bad acne in my early teens. I tried a lot of facial cleansers - Neutrogena, Clearasil, Clean & Clear. Apart from popping them, there wasn't else much I could do. Nowadays, it's no longer a big problem. I still choose facial cleansers and moisturisers with salicylic acid though. Whether it's effective or not, I don't know. But they still cleanse and remove make-up, so it works for me.

Yep, that's pretty much all Minocycline is.

Minocycline is not retinol (I thought?), but is broad range antibiotic used to treat bacterial based (infections) acne. Is retinol really a major component in antibiotics?

With Accutane, instead of fighting the cause of the acne, it targets the oil glands with lots of retinol by making them inactive and, in turn, "atrophying" them to the point where they shrink and become relatively inactive. No oil gland activity, no acne.

Personally I've had some "so-so" acne when I was younger (these days I have a very small amount/no pimples), and by that I mean it wasn't unbearable, nor was it great to live with. I've found that it was mostly caused by stress, but that can be different from person to person mind you.

I didn't really care for those products that claim they cure acne, I've tried one of the really older types called Oxy, garbage really. Didn't really help, smelled funny and just a waste of time I found. So I kinda just lived through it day by day, having a good diet really seems to help. Eating alot of greasy foods, drinking tons of soda, no exercise, alot of stress seem to be some of the most common things that affect acne.

I don't really have advice for what to "cure" acne with, just live with it. It's most likely only until purberty ends. My advice is just to try and not freak out about it, eat healthy and clean your face and neck daily, and just remember, your not the first one to have it, nor will you be the last.

Don't drink soda, period.

FOLLOW that advice.. for me, personally if i drink say a mt. dew or two with a day i have one of those water-pimple things UNDER the skin they suck...

wash your face with soap and it will get all the oily stuff off, just keep it clean.

prevention is best

dont use regular soap, it drys out the skin and makes it worse...

right now i dont have any acne.. just the pimple here and there which u can just pop and squeeze out ALL of it till blood starts coming (yeah gross i know but it has to be done)

I recommend that orange nutrogena soap, and after u wash ur face with that use a cleanser... it should say CLEANSER on the bottle... the orange soap stuff with take off all the oils and the cleanser will keep ur face from getting dry and prevent more....

the alcohol ones can also dry out your skin and make it worse....

and they make your skin feel greasy (usually) after a while.

someone also said "shaving cream subdues acne" ive had a bad experience with this.. had a breakout after using some ocne, but ive also been told from others that it does work...

Zinc pills also help, its good for healthy skin...

another way is to exersize and sweat, it cleans out the pores. just make sure to wash ur face after...

thats my 2 cents... goodluck...

I was put on the antibiotics that insane described for my upper back. My face was never too bad, but my back wasn't pleasant at all. I've been using them for some months now and my back is a lot better, was just a bit of scarring left over.

3 Parts Lime Juice, 2 Parts Soap, 1 Part Brown Sugar, 1 Part Boiling Water. Let them Dissolve overnight in a bowl.

The next day, gently pour a bit onto your face and rub it in slowly. Its done miracles to my face!

I've heard toothpaste on them can work wonders :P

Toothpaste? I've never heard that one. I have heard a bunch of crazy ways to get rid of them. Someone said to put ear wax on it to help. I don't do it though.

Yea, it's kinda gross.
