Sometimes, the past isn't so easily forgotten, and sometimes it greatly affects someone's reputation. This is one of those times.

The occasional steroetype is alright, as long as its a bit of a joke.

 

 

 

But the sterotypes saying that all muslims are terrorists is crap.

Stereotyping isn't wrong, if used properly and in the right context. It's a method of simplification, just like some tools used in economics, which are pure simplifications of reality used for analytical purposes. Just as others have said, there are positive and negative stereotypes. What if you used a positive stereotype in a sarcastic manner? I guess it works both ways... In short: no, I don't think stereotyping is wrong. I think it's one of our methods to help cope with such a diverse and complex world.

To be constructive, stereotypes have historically served to protect. They are only bad when they cannot be changed in light of evidence that they are not true. Initial stereotypes help to protect and help to predict.

Obviously stereotypes are formed for a reason, that a no-brainer. But just because your part of a group of people, dosen't mean you should be judged like all of them; everyone is different and unique.

I know myself I am very stereotypical when it comes to certain people. But I keep it inside, I only think these things. My stereotypes would never stop me from approaching someone or from being their friend, I just have a prejudgement of them in my head before I speak to them. I am sometimes wrong, which should probably prove to me that I should stop, but I can't help it. The thing is my stereotypes are not always a negative thing, just a guess at who the person is, and what their interests are based on looks.

Prejudice is judging someone before you know them, not necessarily just about sexuality, it can be anything, clothes, hair, race.

I think that both of these quotes are at the heart of the matter. Stereotyping does simplify the world, but the world isn't simple and people don't appreciate being simplified. I think that education is necessary to get people to understand when they make stereotypes. It may not be possible to reverse stereotyping, because we stereotype before we have a chance to stop ourselves - it's automatic. However, we can at least recognise when it occurs and do our best to make up for it.
