Marijuana. As bad as they say it is?

Featured Replies

Just in case there is proof to the contrary on the brain cell issue; My first source indicated nobody has ever died from using Marijuana. Not sure if it could damage brain cells like alcohol can and does do in excessive consumption.

But yes, it would be nice to see the source as a part of the debate..

Government experts now admit that pot doesn't kill brain cells.(8) This myth came from a handful of animal experiments in which structural changes (not actual cell death, as is often alleged) were observed in brain cells of animals exposed to high doses of pot. Many critics still cite the notorious monkey studies of Dr. Robert G. Heath, which purported to find brain damage in three monkeys that had been heavily dosed with cannabis.(9) This work was never replicated and has since been discredited by a pair of better controlled, much larger monkey studies, one by Dr. William Slikker of the National Center for Toxicological Research(10) and the other by Charles Rebert and Gordon Pryor of SRI International.(11) Neither found any evidence of physical alteration in the brains of monkeys exposed to daily doses of pot for up to a year. Human studies of heavy users in Jamaica and Costa Rica found no evidence of abnormalities in brain physiology.(12) Even though there is no evidence that pot causes permanent brain damage, users should be aware that persistent deficits in short-term memory have been noted in chronic, heavy marijuana smokers after 6 to 12 weeks of abstinence.(13) It is worth noting that other drugs, including alcohol, are known to cause brain damage.

Just had to do it. Nonetheless, I think marijuana is bad for you.

Another thing:

Myth: Marijuana is harmless

Just as most experts agree that occasional or moderate use of marijuana is innocuous, they also agree that excessive use can be harmful. Research shows that the two major risks of excessive marijuana use are:

1. respiratory disease due to smoking and

2. accidental injuries due to impairment.

Marijuana and Smoking:A recent survey by the Kaiser Permanente Center found that daily marijuana-only smokers have a 19% higher rate of respiratory complaints than non-smokers.(1) These findings were not unexpected, since it has long been known that, aside from its psychoactive ingredients, marijuana smoke contains virtually the same toxic gases and carcinogenic tars as tobacco. Human studies have found that pot smokers suffer similar kinds of respiratory damage as tobacco smokers, putting them at greater risk of bronchitis, sore throat, respiratory inflammation and infections.(2)

Although there has not been enough epidemiological work to settle the matter definitively, it is widely suspected that marijuana smoking causes cancer. Studies have found apparently pre-cancerous cell changes in pot smokers.(3) Some cancer specialists have reported a higher-than-expected incidence of throat, neck and tongue cancer in younger, marijuana-only smokers.(4) A couple of cases have been fatal. While it has not been conclusively proven that marijuana smoking causes lung cancer, the evidence is highly suggestive. According to Dr. Donald Tashkin of UCLA, the leading expert on marijuana smoking:(5)"Although more information is certainly needed, sufficient data have already been accumulated concerning the health effects of marijuana to warrant counseling by physicians against the smoking of marijuana as an important hazard to health.

Look at the end of the day regardless of your views on smoking marijuana and it's effect on you health/state of mind, the choice of whether or not to smoke is totally up to the individual. If you want to smoke it go ahead but only if you want to do it - it's your life so it's your choice.

Quiet clearly it can be realized that marijuana is not as bad as some harder drugs. However there are things that are not looked upon.

Personally, whilst I do not support marijuana, or smoke marijuana, I realize there are many things that are worse, and legal. However, I despise silly statements comparing cigarettes to marijuana. For one, should marijuana have caught on earlier, it would be in the same safe zone at cigerattes. Something deamed bad, but supported too much by the population and simply heavily taxed for money. However, becomeing popular later it did not seize the chance, and was further studied unlike cigerattes. Anyway, my point was while there are many more cigeratte deaths, marijuana being illegal has a smaller usage population [still large though] and it is difficult to track down what you died from, if you did not admit to it. Plus, many smokers of marijuana also smokes cigerattes.

Anyway, Many times when faced with such questions, I go to the trusty website, http://www.goaskalice.com where you can find unbiased, true, information by experts who seek you help you. They realize the only way to change someone, is to inform them, and they choose. They don't point either way, it's not their job. And excerpt here of one question from the quick marijuana search, and later a few more links.

Dear Alice,

Does marijuana have any real, lasting effects?

Signed,

Cannabis

Dear Cannabis,

Rumor always had it that there were few, if any, physical or psychological effects of smoking pot. Recent studies, however, have revealed evidence of some long-term physical effects. Smoking pot causes changes in your brain's chemistry, specifically, inhibiting the function of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, a chemical that transfers information from one nerve cell to another. This accounts for what happens when a person is high--s/he loses his/her short-term memory. Smoking pot interferes with one's intellectual performance and impairs thinking, reading comprehension, and verbal and arithmetic problem solving.

Marijuana smoking is particularly harmful to the lungs, more so than tobacco cigarettes. Joints are most always smoked unfiltered and down to the smallest butt possible and, to get the "best high", one must inhale deeply and hold the smoke longer in their lungs than tobacco smoke. Marijuana smoke contains not only delta-9-THC, but also numerous chemicals similar to tobacco tars, and about 50% more cancer-causing hydrocarbons than a tobacco cigarette.

Marijuana use has been shown to affect male and female reproductive systems, and to affect fetuses during pregnancy. The reproductive cells absorb and hold more THC than do most other body cells. Marijuana somewhat reduces production of testosterone (the hormone that causes development of facial hair, muscle tissue, and the male reproductive system). This might cause a problem in men who are marginally fertile. Some studies indicate that testosterone levels return to normal shortly after a person quits smoking.

So, yes, there are some side effects of smoking pot, both short and long term. Research is continually being done, but as of yet, lung cancer seems to be the most clear-cut physical disease resulting from continued use.

Interesting how the official oldest person in the world is 114. And how, for the last 10 years, there hasn't been anyone recognised as being over 119. Also interesting how the person with the longest confirmed lifetime in history was 122.

It's funny how the official story is usually wrong about things like this. Either way, pot will save your life if you smoke enough.

What the hell? Your loopy, mate.

Ever heard of medicinal marijuana? Anyway just thought I'd say how back in school I had this mate (well a small group of them [the "stoners", if you will]) who became a pretty chronic user and basically ended up with an obvious memory deficiency and a lack of motivation.

Case in point: don't become a chronic user, it can make you an addict and is the major instance when you become addicted to marijuana. Chronic users are the only users who should be called "stoners" because they are the ones who show obvious detremental affects from the drug.

A google search as a reference? You know it's odd how users are the ones who constantly say 'it can cure cancer' and 'it can never harm you.' I'd rather die from cancer than take my chances and become a chronic user; i've seen what it can do to people.

I agree with what you say and i'll add to it. Don't use it. At all. People say it isn't addictive and it may not be, but you will have more after you've tried it once. Eventually, you'll become a chronic user and it'll start messing with your head and by that time you'll have alot of problems.

It won't do anything good for you.

I've been smoking marijuana for about 3 years now almost everyday. I can honestly tell you I feel no different then I did before I started, my marks are exactly the same, they didn't drop or raise, mentally I feel healthy, I keep active, and I haven't lost my motivation.

Truth is there isn't a downside, I love getting together with my buddies and having a great time, just relaxing and playing halo is the best.

As with any substance, some people will choose to use marijuana responsibly and some people will abuse it. The substance should be judged upon it's effects on people, not how people decide to use it. Marijuana is safe.

Answer me this? Why do you smoke it? And why did you smoke it in the first place? Peer pressure?

He said he smokes it almost everyday, that's borderline chronic use if not chronic use. From my friends experiences, that kind of use isn't harmless as you suggest. Of course, in moderation, (as with most things) it can be more or less harmless.

Why do you smoke it? And why did you smoke it in the first place? Peer pressure?

Most people start smoking because they want to know what its like and if they like it. They keep using because they like it and it isn't harmful to them. Peer pressure is just a buzzword, it does not accurately describe what goes on in reality. Go ask the stoners at your school (if you go to a public highschool, there will be plenty around) how many of them ever experienced "Peer Pressure" to smoke pot. See for yourself the reality of the situation.
