What are the qualities of a good community?

I have been a part of the RuneScape community for over 4 years. During my time playing RuneScape i have seen over 4 generations of players. As many of you are aware, the RS community isn't as it once was. Im not going to rant about how bad it is. I am simply looking for an explanation, why do things change the way they do? Was it the discovery of manipulation? Scamming for example? Was it the lose of virtue in the common player? Im not going to get into virtue, for there is no one definition of it, as any of you that have read "The Dialogue's of Plato" know. It seems that something has set the community astray. Instead of the once always welcoming friendly atmosphere I once knew, it seems that true friends and the quality of people as a whole are in a serious dearth. Maybe it is the desire to have a word, or even a sentance, in the story of RuneScape, that causes people to ignore character, kindness, or generousity? I challenge you to your very core, are you yourself a true player of virtue? Do you pocess the qualities that truelly contribute to the common good of a community, thee community?

Why try to avoid the inevitable? Runescape will be going downhill no matter what you do because there will always be those immature players who would not stop insulting others just to be reminded of how "great they are" compared to others. They would not stop doing that even if it was the last phrase they uttered. Of course we can congratulate players on a level up, help new players out(I see that everyday), but there will be the immature brats who view RuneScape as just a "game" where you can mess around and not what it truly is- a community of quite a few highly intelligent people. These players cannot be tamed- no matter what your thrown at them. I do see your point though, being nice to one player can cause that player to open up and be kind to other player and so on.

You seem to think that we are talking about something as simple as life and death, yes in it's own way a community does take on a life of its own. But im not asking to perserve the community, im asking to fix it, to cure it of the most deadly kind of disease, hate. The RuneScape Community is fatally infected. But YOU can help to cure her.

See my friend you prove my point, but not as you may think. When you are called a noob your instinct is to "shut them up," maybe it is because you do not pocess the courage to attack the real source of the problem? Why are they calling you a noob? Do you think if you shared the same philosophy of RuneScape that you hold to be true, which is most likely one that consists of maturity and kindness i hope, that they would not too see and beleive the way you do? Are you so quick to give up on people? Then maybe my cause is already lost, maybe the community is too far gone.

Furthermore I ask one thing of you, on your every day life in RuneScape can you find the time to do ONE thing that you wouldnt normally do. Wether it is helping a new player out, making a new friend, being nice to someone, congratulating someone on a level-up, doing something with a friend, etc. I beleive we CAN change the community, wether it be one deed at a time, or changing the way a person thinks or acts.

All I ask is that you do ONE thing that can contribute, wether it be small or large, to the community. Be nice to someone! Lend a helping hand! Do something with a friend!

CONTRIBUTE! HAVE COURAGE!

I'm behind you 100%. I've played for 2 - 3 years, and the whold gaming experience has gone downhill. Sometimes it's just best to curl up in rogues and cook lobbies and burn willows. 99 Cooking and Firemaking here I come! [59k lobbies and 142k willows left] That should last me till most of the noobs quit right?

I always talk to people if I see them say something to me and they are being polite. If i don't say something then its because your being a jerk or I didn't notice you say something (reading forums or changing songs). I try to be as nice as I can to everyone so I guess I'm in :) .

I've been with your cause for as long as you have. ;)

It's not just Miniclip <.< I hate when people say that. It's more kids talking about RS at school than anything. But yes Miniclip helps with the world with noobs.

Quit RuneScape :)

Since RS2 and Miniclip came out, the community has gone downhill in a way. I'll join your cause!

Once again, I'm going to say something.

Just as much crap is going on now as has ever been...(except for the very beggining).

The thing is, as time goes on, more and more people know about all the scams and what-not that can be used. Also, with more players and items come more and more ways to scam and abuse. So the variety and number of incidences have increased, but proportional to rsc, there's hardly any more going on now than was then.

That I agreed with(and was about to post), but the real message of this post is to try to rectify this problem - just to do your part in improving the community person by person.

I think the problem with the community is, as with many other games, elitism. There's hundreds of thousdans of 30-60's out there who've only been playing a few months, and a small percentage of them have taken up the ideas of begging and scamming as a shortcut to rising higher. Why? Because it's legitimately tough to get high in any stats without working your socks off. Alot of these beggars/scammers/blaggers are purely and simply, lazy.

I've always tried to help out where I can; if someones stuck or lost, I'll always lend a hand without using those two words I see all too frequently "How much?". Hell, if I've got something spare, I'll donate an item of some description if someones legitimately fallen on hard times, or if I'm just in a whimsical mood. Guys, it's a game. A game is to be played, a game is to be fun. It's not about who's got the highest max. hit or who's stacking full Guthans... it's about interacting with other players and helping each other reach those high levels.

So seeing as I do it anyway, and will continue to do, I'll scrawl my signature :)

I help people depending on if I have to go out of my way to do things.. If it's quick or on the way to what I'm heading out to do. I'll help Unless it's questing since I hate them. For some reason I wind up getting help requested from the most thick-headed players ever so that's a reason I don't like helping much.

And shepherds we shall be, for Thee, my Lord, for Thee.

Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,

that our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command.

So we shall flow a river forth to Thee,

and teeming with souls shall it ever be.

In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti.

im always nice O:)

add me if you want proof :)

I always tell the truth even when I lie

hmmm, while i constantly hear stories about the community going down hill, i never seem to notice it. ive never had anybody be paticularly mean to me, but i do tend to keep to myself. secondly, I think the main reason the runescape community has gone down hill is that the avarage age among players has gone down over time. that is also the main reason non members is so much worse then members. however, age isnt everything. im 12 right now and have been playing for about a year and a half now, and while its not always true, i try to at least be nice and courtious to people, not taking their training spots etc.. becasue, while these may not be "rules" as in real life, when you do this your basicaly just a "[bleep]". also, there has been a big rise in people who play the game for levels, but who dont paticularly like it. this is where beggers, scammers etc come in. again, this can be attribuited to the younger base of players.

Once again, I'm going to say something.

This is agreed, but in RSC everyone was a lot nicer in my opinion. I don't know if this is what you are referring to when you say way beggining though...

Yup. 'Course, that's how I first heard of RS, so...

I'll sign. Usually I try to be nice to ppl unless they're acting like flaming idiots (which, sadly enough, happens a lot  ). If they're acting like idiots, I usually find a way to mess with their minds

perfect grammar is one thing, typing like a drugged monkey and enjoying it is another

AMEN!

I always say gratz when I see someone level up. Why not, in the first place? It takes around 1,5 seconds to type, and you can make someone happy. I always like it when someone says something to me when I level up.

So please, do it. It won't hurt you at all. It takes about 1,5 seconds. Thats not much. Infact, it is almost nothing.

BTW: I'm not 100% sure if I'm always trying to be nice, and wÃÆÃâÃâánt to always be nice. Jerks go straight into ignore. When they say randomly noob at me, I say n00b yourself back. Or show them my santa. They shuts them up most of the time anyway.

So I'm certainly not always nice. And I don't want to be it either.
