magekillr
why do recent horror films suck? because they are full of blood, gore, and a typical theme of mass murder....none match the quality of horror and suspense that they once reached... i am never scared during the horror movies of today...just annoyed at the mass amounts of gore tonight on AMC i watched "Misery" (another Steven King movie)...and was BLOWN AWAY. absolutely stunning, scary, suspenseful, and the whole movie i got pissed at commercials lol movies like this...and movies like the Shining are the true horror films...not this crap that is just massive killings. sure some horrors might be predictable at points...but this movie kept me on my seat the whole time i wasn't scared much...but i was "disturbed" i guess...like at one point it's thundering and raining out...so i knew something would happen (typical synopsis to represent a change in tone in a movie...thank you 11th grade english lol)...but the "psycho" person comes in the room and is all dreary..and the guy goes "what's wrong?"...she goes on to tell him stuff..then b4 she leaves she turns her head and goes "this is my gun...*clicks it with an empty chamber*...sometimes i like to load it and shoot it"...then leaves THAT^^^ is true horror...an event that could totally happen at any time..and subtle things like that discuss
GordanFreeman
I don't think it's fair to say that all horror movies that have been made in/around the present are horrible, but not many will actually scare you. I think that many horror directors focus much more on the "quick scare" that a guy with a huge axe/chainsaw popping out from the dark corner while the two teenagers are making out might give the teenagers that actually pay to go see these horror movies, instead of focusing on what would really scare you: how the characters develop, the plot, and the story. I'd say they also probably focus way too much on the special effects. Special effects and quick scares can be great in horror movies, but not when the plot, storyline, and characters suck. magekillr
Hey, The Ring scared me :uhh: every1 says the ring scared them :\...well not every1...just a lot more than i expected i dunno, the only thing that scared me about that movie was when the mom was at the sink and goes "No..i saw her eyes..."...then it flashes very quickly to a disfigured corpse inside the closet.. that's the only part that scared me tbh
1_man_army
In my opinion, the reason why horror films have been disapointing recently is because they seem to follow the same basic formula. When Im at the cinema watching a horror film now I can read when/if something is about to happen which ruins the experience, the 'shocks' are no longer unexpected. Also, since the 70's & 80's pushed the envelope so much for the genre there is virtually no subject that can be completely shocking so what direction is there left to exploit that can be groundbreaking? He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. - Aeschylus (525 BC - 456 BC)
re4p3r1
horror films lately have become too 1 dimensional. theres always a stupid horror film where a crazy guy with a knife decides to go kill some teens. they need to start using their imaginations, the last horror film i saw and actually like was the latest in the SAW series
Mercifull
Modern American teen horror = suck Horror even less than 5 years ago tends to be of a much more superior quality than what gets made at the moment, its a shame. Harrington
I agree to an extent, that most recent horror movies haven't quite been up to spec'. You're right that they often follow the same formula and try to scare you with a big noise, instead of actual suspense. Of late, I've also found that trailers tend to give away far too much and when I finally see the movie, I'm left with this distinct feeling of deja-vu for 90 minutes lol. In saying this, there's been some excellent horror movies in the last decade or so... The Descent The Crow Event Horizon to name but a few :)
magekillr
Modern American teen horror = suck Horror even less than 5 years ago tends to be of a much more superior quality than what gets made at the moment, its a shame. exactly man..but they don't seem to want to go anywhere else with them... i never enjoyed horror b/c i was sheltered inside this genre of non stop murder and gore and saw no real art being made... then i watch old ones and i am in love
Harrington
You wanna know how to judge a good horror just by looking at the box? The certificate... if it's not an 18, don't touch it is my rule. It's not 100% effective as some older horror movies which were originally 18s have been dropped to a 15. The only modern exception to the rule I can think of is Silent Hill, that was a 15. p.s. sorry I'm not sure how certification works in the States. 00 Quanta
The Exorcist was unexpected for people when it came in theaters over half the people watching ran out of the room showing the movie, some were scared and others were dizzy or something like that... Artemis495
I'd become fairly numb to horror movies in the last decade, esp slasher movies, but a few movies did make me change my mind: The Ring - Hardly any gore, lots of suspense, and you don't see the Bad Thing till the very end. Final Destination - The first one was INTENSE - and it's a slasher movie without a slasher  FD 2 and 3 got stale really quick though Saw - Yes, it's bloody, but the main plot (2 guys in the bathroom) is engaging and suspenseful... even though you KNOW it will end badly. Mercifull
The reason you feel you have become numb to horror movies in the last few years is because they all tend to be gory rather than actually scary these days. 00 Quanta
Asian Horror Films > American Horror Films American horror films started getting lame and not scary since probably 2000 Asian horror films find ways to make the movie scary still... The Grudge - Ju-On, originally Asian film that was copied, american version wasn't even scary compared to the Asian version Shutter - Thai horror film, would scare the hell out of you if you watch it

goldphishies
You're being a bit harsh. There are a few horror movies that are up to speed lately, like the Ring (1&2), Saw (1-3), and Primeval. Primeval wasn't scary, it almost went back to the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street stuff, where it's all suspense. Freddy Kruger FTW!! He'll kill you while you sleep!  :ohnoes: :ohnoes: [>>Thanks to Yaff2 for Reaper,Trooper, and DOOM sigs, Navyplaya for nature sigs, Hardwick246 for gold sig, ThruItAll for Darkwatch and guitar sigs, and Aijiru for avvy!<<][>>Refresh for new Siggie!<<]

PumpkinPete112
Shutter - Thai horror film, would scare the hell out of you if you watch it And of course America remakes FTL! Shutter(2008)-USA Version :( The problem is we see the "monster" too much. Old films like the original " Haunting" has nothing but noises and some moving doors and such, but it scared the life out of lots of people. The second a horror movie starts nowadays, we see the beast. If they kept it hidden our imaginations would run wild and scare us more. Sig
