Guide to cropping!

Since most people dont know how to crop, here is a small ad easy guide how to learn it.

First of all, why do you need to crop?

Because it is really annoying to see al that white! And cropping a picture only takes a couple of seconds!

Where do you need to crop pictures?

I advice to do this in Paint.

Usually, Paint is standard on your computer.

Where to find this?

Start -> All Programs -> Office Accessories -> Paint

Cant find it this way?

Right-click on your Start-button. Take Search. Search for: Paint.

First of all, when you need to crop, youll need a picture!

How to take this picture?

Press PrintScreen-button. (PrtSc).

Youll now have a screenshot of the whole screen on the moment you took the pic.

Now, open Paint.

Right-click, paste.

When you now Save the picture, that aint cropping!

It will look like this:

cropdv8.png

This is a big: NO!!!

Its easy to do, but people hate it to look at!

People hate you for it!

So, what do you have to do.

In paint, select the region you need.

Here you see the region selected (the dotting pen line):

cropmn4.png

Now, right-click this region and select: Copy.

Open a new Paint-file.

Just go to File and select New.

Paste your region their.

You are not finished yet! But you are almost their!

If you would save it now, and your screen is to big, its horrible!

Some people think their Paint will crop it itself. This isnt true!

If your screen is to big, and you save it, you will get a lot white space!

And that looks even more horrible then the first picture I posted.

Here is what youll get:

cropqf2.png

Its bad for the eyes

Now, what you need to do:

When you just opened your Paint, make the screen very small!

Certainly smaller then the window you are going to paste!

Heres a picture.

Might be hard to see Just make sure the window is smaller then the one you are going to paste.

cropmf4.png

Now, paste the window, and the Paint-window will become larger itself and fit into it!

Here is the picture youll have when you paste it into it.

Its perfect!

Just save the picture now.

File -> Save As -> Now just save it as .bmp or something.

You now have a nice cropped picture.

Its fun for the eye to look at.

Just perfect.

Have fun cropping!

Their might be other ways to crop, but this is as far as I know the most simple.

Its done very fast!

Now, make sure this isnt your cropping level:

Ok, this works on a Windows computer, but I know some people who have

Mac's.

To take a normal screenshot, press Shift, Apple, and 3 all at the same time.

To take a cropped screenshot, press Shift, Apple and 4 all at the same time.

A slection tool will come up and you can select the area of the screenshot you want to take.

Hope this helps,

Paint! - UGH!

http://www.irfanview.com/ - The flattened cat rules!

While mostly a viewer, it has the option to capture, and can crop. There is also a plugin to add "PNGOUT" optimized PNG saving. Another trick up it's sleeve is pixelation, to hide stuff without an ugly hole.. the "face full of squares" effect.

A great piece of freeware / donationware.

Your guide is great, I hope to see less white space on some TIF Screenshots. Well done! =D>

I don't use paint either. A tool I use is called The Gimp. Its free and it quite easy to use and is a great little program. I've made my sig in it, its great for cutting out objects as you can get right into the nitty gritty and cut it down. Great program and its free, I recommend it.

Pokemama - You mentioned you had something that could convert .bmp to .gif. Anyone who could maybe PM me some tips on making some small, simple animations using freeware programs would be greatly appreciated.

Nice guide! I hope that it will improve the quality of pictures on TIF by removing white space. Suggestion: save images in .png format. Png's have better quality in less space.

I'll add it, ty for info.

This depends on how old your version of Paint is. Older versions of Paint don't do PNG at all. JPGs from Paint are very fuzzy because they are low quality (high quality JPGs can be made by other programs). GIFs made directly from Paint are also low quality, and lose tons of colors making them look bizarre.

Thus the use of imagemagick (see http://forum.tip.it/viewtopic.php?t=564049 ) to convert your high quality BMPs directly to GIF (or PNG or whatever).

The result is a nice, crisp picture suitable for the forums and even the Tip.It website!

BTW, Kill_Life, I've been advised that this guide (although superb, of course) can't go in the AOW. :( However, it was suggested that it go into the Gallery where it might also be added to their tutorials list. I know the Help and Advice forum sticky would likely also add a pointer to it. And possibly we could add one here, perhaps in the stickied "how to write a guide" guide.

it's a lot easier to get over yourself when you look at intelligence the same way you look at beauty, or height, or eye color: being smart is easy, but being good is hard ... being smart is handed to you, being good is handed to *nobody*.

Let me know your thoughts.

I don't really mind that it won't go in the AOW.

Since this isn't a Runescape guide, but helps cropping pictures to put them on TIF.

Would be cool if it goes in the Gallery, etc.

I would be honored :D

If I may be so free also to suggest "Rate This!" and "Graveyard"? Since a lot of pictures get posted their.

And like I said, I don' mind if it doesn't get in the AoW :)

Thanks Kill_Life. Although most regular Gallery users already know this sort of thing, hopefully it will help players who are new to graphics and just want to post some simple Runescape pictures.

Gallery users, please be kind :). And if someone wants to post info on how to use the Paint "handles" to crop, it would be very much appreciated.

Maybe an old version of Paint.

in that case, make your screen bigger then the window you want to paste.

Paste and and you'll have a lot white space.

Now, make the Paint-screen smaller untill you just reach the borders of the screen you just pasted.

That should do it...

To all people, this guide remains for Paint! It's like I said, Paint is standard on like all computerts, that's why.

Gimp is a free download now a days. It's much better than Paint.

But Gimp isn't on most computer...

Like very little computers.

And some people don't trust downloads.

So, this remains: PAINT...

um....when you select the region needed, how do you do that? what i end up doing is resizing the pic every time and it gets tinier. what i mean is i click and hold on the tiny boxes in the corners.
