This guide assumes that you have read the Barbarian Assault article available in RuneScape's KnowledgeBase, Read Tip.It̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s Barbarian Assault Guide, paid minimal attention to the tutorial in game (yeah, I thought the tutorial was a drag too).

Understand the interface

Here we shall take a look at the Healers̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ Interface.

healerinterfacevl8.png

In the upper right-hand corner of the screen you will see:

A Penance beast: The current wave

Ear: What your correspondent has told you. (At times this will be blank, which means your partner has not used his/her horn to ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâupdate̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ or ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢call̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ your information.)

Mouth: Shows the information that your partner needs to know to fulfill their role. You will use the horn in your inventory to select a ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâTell̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ option that matches with the mouth. How do I know if I̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ve made the right call? Your chat box will show all the calls you̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ve made. If you keep your scroll bar down all the way, you can make sure the last thing you̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ve said matches with the mouth symbol.

Horn: This is the person whom you are contacting with your horn. They rely on you for information, and you rely on them as well.

Healers Only: Along the bottom of the game screen you̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ll see a table with the Current/Base HP Levels of the other players. If one of the players uses the ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâMedic̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ option on their horns, or if their HP gets below a certain point, a Red Cross will flash next to their name. It is difficult to see because the table is rather transparent. Just be sure to keep an eye on your Team̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s HP.

Know how to use your horn

Perhaps the single-most important thing in this game is using your horn. If you can̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t keep your team mate(s) up to speed, they can̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t do their job, and that̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s bound to make someone angry J

Most times, the horn must be RIGHT-CLICKED

hornattkz8.pnghorncolxq5.png(Defender and Healer horns to be added later).

The following calls may be Left-clicked. Remember which is yours and save yourself some time (and perhaps prevent a mis-click).

Attacker: Red Eggs

Collecter: Style 1

Defender: Poison Tofu

Healer: Tofu

Begin the wave with your interface on the Inventory section. You̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ll be making a call right from the get-go, so be ready (it is especially important for Collector(s) and Healer(s) to make their call ASAP).

Keep Auto Retaliate OFF. And Run ON

Auto Retaliate remains off for attackers because you don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t want to ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢retaliate̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ using the wrong attack style. Everyone else can̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t attack any of the Fighters or Rangers anyway. Keep run on. Go faster, faster. Note to healers: ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬ÅDrink From-Healer Pool̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ

Thank you, both.

I'll be spending some time at Barbarian Assault to take pictures after my friends get back from school. Don't want to make strangers mad because I'm running around taking pictures instead of focusing on the game :-$

As far as equipment goes, I just go with my best set of armor (yeah, it's rune :P). And best D'hide when the queen spawns. *shrug* I believe there are adequate recommendations for equipment in the Barbarian Assault guide (sticky). My focus is more on just the Defender and what one needs to do to get the job done [well] and nab points :P

Now, if by chance I discover some configuration of equipment that annihilates the Runners, I'll be sure to share.

To be honest, I found it easier to just have a main goal as defender- keep the runners away from the exit. I've played many games with a group of friends (all of us were in TeamSpeak, it makes this game A LOT easier), and what I would do as a defender is just make sure no runners got through the exit, by just leading them away from the exit when they got close. I never missed ONE runner until wave 8. Since each runner missed is equal to -3 points, I just kept them away to maximize our amount of total points after each wave. You might be thinking "well, how does he kill them?". What I do is just lead them away, and after all penance fighters and rangers are killed, the attackers use the red eggs already loaded in the cannon (by the healer) to pick off all of the wandering runners. It is really easy to keep the runners away with this method, and easily gets you more points if you don't miss any. I think it's just as easy, and probably easier to use this method, because you don't have to worry about leading them to a certain destination, just away from the exit. And also, you don't have to worry about gathering logs to fix the traps.

EDIT: This method also is easier when using the "right click--> stock food" option on the dispenser, because since the dispenser is right next to the cave, you can just take the right food ONLY, and run away from the cave while dropping the food, which lures them away from the cave.

Thanks for your input and sharing your method. Sure, wailing on the Runners with the egg launchers is an easy out, but I don't like others doing my job for me, especially if it takes away my precious honour points.

When you get the hang of things, it's not too difficult to keep the Runners away from the Lure cave AND lead them to the traps. And getting that point across is the purpose of this guide.

I'm assuming that one has a competent team, but I can't assume that they are friends with their team mates, or that they have teamspeak. Both of which are a distinct advantage in Barbarian Assault. No doubt about that.

Again, thanks.

Nice guide, just one thing I wanted to point out: Why barricade on level 10 and not on level 9? The monsters on level 9 are stronger, and generally people have 2 healers on wave 10, so it's ok for the monsters to come out faster. It also makes it a heck of a lot better to kill them faster, preferably before the queen comes out. When I've failed on the queen before, it's always been because there were a few runners left, and the person couldn't keep up with getting healed and trying to trap the runners. When the runners were all killed before the queen came, it was much easier. So I really think it's important to completely put off barricading in Wave 10.

Just one other little thing, I like to drop two bait on each space leading to the trap before I dash for the logs/hammer, and often time 2 runners will be killed by the time I get back. (Maybe also mention that food doesn't have to be put directly on the trap, it can be put in a 9x9 square around the trap?)

But again, nice guide. \'

Perhaps my organizational skills are at fault. I did mention that the need to barricade depends on the capability of your team. I agree, if in any wave your attackers and healers are overwhelmed, definately barricade the Penance Caves.

I also mentioned in wave 10 that if your team mates can handle themselves, go ahead and focus on the runners. The sooner the better, eh? (I hate it when they're the last Penace standing. I feel like a slacker :P )

Nods for the bait thing. Mentioned that.

I'll do what I can to make those points more clear. :-k

Is it necessary to pick up the wrong kind of bait when the bait changes so that the runners don't eat it, or will simply placing the right bait near it be sufficient? For example, when I start, should I place a line of the correct bait from north of the east tower to the east trap, and then, when the bait changes, place another line of the new correct bait? Or should I first pick up the wrong bait?

EDIT: I've also heard about a strategy in which, rather than placing food in a line to the traps, you simply place some of each kind of food in the 9x9 grid around the traps. Have you ever tried that? What do you think about it?

Coming back to this post, I realize that I didn't quite give my reasoning. Forgiveness please.

If your attackers have Moderate to High Combat Levels (and they should), having 2 attackers from waves 1-9 should rid the field of Penance Fighters and Rangers fairly quickly. Again, if the field seems congested, yes to barricades. Just note that you will likely lose points for letting Runners get to the Lure cave.

On wave 10, you receive the same amount of points when you win, regardless of how many runners 'get past'. There is usually only one attacker (two healers). So barricading would alleviate the pressure from the attacker (and the healers trying to keep your attacker alive), without incurring any penalties (as opposed to waves 1-9).

It's not absolutely necessary to pick up the old bait leading to the trap. Runners will be lured to bait whether or not it is correct, when they react to the bait is when things get tricky. Wrong bait = Erratic behavior.

If you're luring with a 'line,' place a new line then go back and pick up the old bait if you've got time. Your attention should be more on the Runner. He may not even head in the direction of the old line. Just stay a step ahead of him

Runners are just plain weird. Imagine, I placed a baited and placed a line to the west trap from a Runner that was at the south wall. The Runner skipped the all the bait along line (but he kinda followed it. I think :anxious: ) and took the bait at the trap. Hum.

EDIT: I've also heard about a strategy in which, rather than placing food in a line to the traps, you simply place some of each kind of food in the 9x9 grid around the traps. Have you ever tried that? What do you think about it?

I've heard of this. Very sneaky. I haven't tried it, but I have this much to say: If a Runner chomps a bait that is grossly wrong (remember how fickle they are?) will "Bluggh.." and run away in an unpredictable direction, taking no damage at all from the trap. Quite frustrating. I like to keep the baits near the trap as updated as possible to avoid this.

I don't mean desperately changing the bait near the trap immediately after you've been updated. There is a certain 'grace period' (a few seconds) in which if the Runners takes the 'old' bait, he'll still feel the sting of the trap :3

Heading back down to reassure myself that I'm not crazy...

A little tip for defenders...

If you place down the correct food (ex: tofu), and it changes (ex:worms), you do not need to pick up the tofu and replace with worms, the runners will still eat it, because it was "right" when you dropped it.

This guide might help me some to my quest to be a lvl 5 defender.

Also maybe add to relieve stress of the healers, spec with excalibur as often as you can in the final rounds to raise your defense? :-k

Good guide. Could use some pictures and a little material but very good. I've been a defender and am almost at level 5 and I only picked it because first day it was in high demand and still is. Your tips are very good. The only issue I have is that you say to wait at the horn of glory for a low level. THe only problem I have with that is that on the queen the runners seem to get stukc very easily behind the mushrooms and such. Maybe this could be just me but it would be helpful to mention.

After reading this, I tried it as you described and watched for the Runners' reactions. Sometimes they would take the old bait and enjoy it, sometimes they would 'Bluggh.' I'll keep trying it out.

I hope this guide helps enough that I don't have to be a Defender anymore!! I'd like to earn points in other roles but Defender is usually the only 'open' one *shakes fist at sky*

To clarify: I suggested that lower leveled (combat level, not role level) Defenders may want to wait at the horn of glory (the only safe spot) until the rest of the team has taken care of most of the Penance. The purpose being that your Healers will have one less player to worry about. Honestly, I haven't tried it as I survive well enough. Defenders with lower combat levels might want to provide some input? (or just get their combat levels up :XD: )

Defenders that don't take much damage will be more beneficial to the team if they are assisting, and if they can rid the Runners before the queen spawns.

A Defender's duty is simplest at Wave 10 because the runners generally get 'stuck' in one area.

I will certainly post a picture of this spot.

Yes! Keep harrassing me for pictures. It's probably the only way I'll get it done. Hopefully I'll have decent picture up tomorrow.

Section: Incurring Penalties. Yay! There's a cap to the amount of points you can lose for your team! :D

Letting Runners Past= -3 Points up to a Maximum of -10 Points.

So, if at any point in the wave you have let past 4 Runners, focus on baiting them as they exit the Penance Cave rather than trying to get them away from the Lure Cave.

I've just started getting into defender, certainly gets easier at lvl 3+.

It's important you get speedy updates from healers, especially at start. Rush the trap as fast as you can and put a few bait there in the 3x3 grid. Then drop some more as you run for the wood + hammer. Then just keep dropping stuff to keep them occupied, make sure there's plenty of food on the ground. Best if it's the right one but better any food than no food.

I think my method needs a bit of tweaking but I just did a run at lvl 3/4 defender with a healer who kept me updated pretty well and only let 1 runner though, on wave 9.

Also as far as i understand it, as long as it's the right food when you drop it, they will chomp away happily. Never noticed that not be the case.

Also no penalties on queen so doesn't matter letting runners past. Just make sure you have the right food on the trap and you keep it fixed, there's less need to hold them up by dropping junk.

Mm, perhaps my Healer wasn't fast enough on the horn (or just plain wrong at times). What I wouldn't give for a good Healer... :wall:

Edit: I take back what I said. I'm not crazy! :o And my Healers were fine.

The following is from the Barbarian Assault Guide in progress (sticky)

The rule is food drops right/wrong status

Remains same after changes

eg:

Tofu dropped when it should be worms will be wrong even when it changes to tofu

Worms dropped when it says worms will be right when it changes to tofu

HOWEVER this only applies to Runners in the arena, brand new runners that (re)spawn at the door after change over will find any pre-dropped food wrong, accept food that fits current status

eg: if it is on Tofu when runner appears at door for that runner ONLY tofu that had already been dropped will be correct

I believe this to be the case, as I witnessed some Runners disatisfied with the bait that was correct at the time of my dropping it.

Thank goodness (and Paw Claw)! I was losing my mind with this old vs new correct bait thing, wondering why my Runners "Bluggh'd" when everyone said they wouldn't. \'

I'll be adding some General Rules/Tips that all team members should be aware of. I'm sure I've left out a few other things that should be explained. I'll keep adding as they come to mind.
