Blu-ray or HD-DVD?

So.. the Blueray and HD sections are getting much bigger at HMV lol.

Think it's nearly time to begin the move from DVD onto the new format.... but which? No one wants to invest money in one particular medium that ends up disappearing.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm pretty mad at whatever body decides what new formats should be used. I can't believe they've allowed us consumers to be put into a situation like this.

Anyway, which format are you tempted to choose (or you may have done so already). Which format do you think will win the "war"?... and why?

I'm really on the fence on this one... gonna wait a bit longer before I decide, and of course, wait for the prices to come down, not just for the players, but for the discs also.

ARGUEMENTS FOR HD-DVD

* Blueray disks have a thinner protective layer, making them more vurnable to scratches - Mechwariorx

* HD Discs are region free - Mechwariorx (TBC, but it's looking good)

* Adult industry has chosen this format - Mechwariorx (TBC)

* HD players are currently generally cheaper - indy500fan

* HD discs are cheaper to produce, thus cheaper to buy for the consumer - Mercifull

ARGUEMENTS FOR BLU-RAY

* Blueray discs have a higher capacity. - Mechwariorx

* Blueray disc higher capacity might make it a winner with businesses which could save the format - Mercifull

* The PS3 has a blueray player included

I'm going for the hybrid option. If that's not the case I'm putting my money on blu-ray. I'm currently saving for a PS3, so i'll already have a blu-ray player.

I was thinking about a hybrid player as well... but I don't wanna waste money on the actual discs too lol. If one format wins out eventually, then they may stop making hybrid players or perhaps they'll be too expensive.

It's a crapshoot either way you go at the moment. I don't have the money to waste on a format that doesn't win, so I have to stick to DVDs for now. Sticking to DVDs is also kind of a crapshoot, since they wont be made much longer after the new formats go popular.

Yer, damned if you do, damned if you don't. We consumers have really been let down by the powers that be

Great original topic, many kudos to you.

HD DVD.

HD DVD's have a 0.6mm protective layer, while the protective layer on a Blu-ray disk is 0.1mm. Even though the Blu-ray disk's protective layer is stronger, one scratch and you have ruined your disk.

HD DVD is region free: buy a disk in Asia, play it in North America.

"But 30GB isn't enough for me! I need 46GB!" My hard drive isn't even 30GB! (Kidding.) 30GB Is more than enough to hold a full-length movie in 1080p and then some.

Last but not least, the American adult film industry has chosen HD DVD over Blu-ray. :anxious:

I would chose HD DVD player over a Blu-ray player now; but the war is not over yet.

I thought HD DVDs had regions, and I was pretty sure Blu-Ray is what the adult industry went with. It is not making nearly the amount of difference it normally would though, the Internet is taking that market share.

HD-DVD players are cheaper at the moment, which will probably mean they will win. The cheap $300 (or was it $200?) didn't make as much a difference as it was supposed to either though. I think a lot of people are like me, just waiting it out.

I will check up on both of those.

I am leaning towards HD DVD now but my decision is not set in stone; we will see what the future holds! clicḫ̩̉̉>

HD-DVD is better for consumers. They are cheaper to produce and can be pressed with minimal additions and modifications at the factories compared to Bluray which needs all new kit. This makes the production phase cheaper and thus passing savings onto the public. HD-DVD spec was also written by the DVD consortium i belive.

BluRay however has a higher storage capacity which i personaly feel makes it better suited for business use and storage. Its high capacity is ideal for backups and large databases. I feel this has a much greater commercial benefit than to the consumer who will end up paying far more than they really should do.

In an ideal world sony would change the direction of their Bluray media, like they did with Betamax which ultimately ended up scaling down and turning into Video8/Hi8 which is still the leading camcorder media, and got for B2B leaving the consumer marker open to the cheaper and more flexible HD-DVD.

Alas sony are committed to foisting thier expensive media onto consumers and I fear that it will eventually win out against HD-DVD.

Even more bad news about this is that its not going to happen over night and its going to be several yars before one or the other conceeds and for the whole time this is going ahead the public just wont adopt it. Consumers remember the VHS/Betamax war and dont want a repeat.

This competition is actually harming the market and stiffling demand for HD products. I am desperate to watch some kick [wagon] films on my nice big HD TV but im not forking out ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã500 for a player and loads of money for Bluray discs only for them to be obsolete in a few years. At the moment DVD is still king.

Also it's Blu-ray, not Blueray (or abbreviated BD for Blue-ray Disc) :P .

Blu-ray FTW, 5 of the 6 major hollywood studios have sighned exclusively to blu-ray
Its actually only 3 or 4. One of them recently abandoned Bluray in favour of HD-DVD. The rest are using both.

Yeah, they were making a big deal about Paramount jumping ship recently. They're now with HD-DVD :)
