If you have any criticism, please make sure its constructive! :) Five year Runescape anniversary! The Editor Yup thatÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s right; the game of Runescape was officially released in January 2001 which makes it five years to the month now! Last weekÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s article looked back at the highlights of 2005 and IÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢d like to take a brief... Chantzzzzz
The only thing I want to comment on is that you mentioned more commercialism. Well, since Jagex is constantly expanding (i.e. upgrades and new servers), they need to finance this somehow. They need the advertising. Computers are tricky and break down, need repairs, and need programming. That's just my 2 cents
-Hero-
Great article, i understand why you talked mostly about RSC, it being the first game and having the 'sense of community' that was lost when rs2 came out and with the influx of new players. saberlion
Player owned houses were big back then, they delayed their relase and gave rune weapons instead. Since that was a couple of years ago, POHs may not be even close Just goes to show how nothing really changes
Bubsa
I can't wait to see the person who disputes this release date :P This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
Mirror
I could have been there at the beginning but didnt join until 04. I cant believe runescape is 5 years old. Amazing! Muffin_Daddy
Sad to say that I have only known of it's exsistance for a year. When it first came out, I didn't even have the internet yet (I was a "late bloomer"). :?

n64jive
aww...good times...rsc will always be one of my favorite past times... sadly all good things do come to an end, but o well. i wish i had kept all my old pics of rsc..i have many uploaded on uploadit.org but due to their limit, all have been lost(yea i switched to imageshack.us).. Runescape classic was at its high point before the fatigue update, went downhill shortly after that. Sure autoing was on the rise, but it was fun when you would run into someone at a training spot and laugh at some autoer.
CL_Gnatt
Well i've been playing RS for quite a while, over 4 years i rekon maybe close to 5? When i first started there was only 2 worlds, and you could only have 1250 per world. So only 2500 could play RS at the same time. I distincly remember typing in my name and password and spending 30mins sitting there just pressing enter non-stop waiting for a space in the world. I started just after they introduced the wildy, they hadn't even changed the old guide which talked about choosing between being a monster killer or a player killer. I'm fairly sure there was no such thing as an R2H when i started as no1 had that level. But i distinctly remember the day Bluerose13x got 99 smithing. it was big, everyone was talking about it, such was the sense of community. But all this is old skool, *sniff* i love reminiscing. khamoshi
RSC was a great with its not so spectacular but pleasant graphics, i enjoyed that much more than rs2. As the numbers of players increased i think i lost interest in the game.

diverboy699
wow... when i heard bout "the good ol' days" where every1 was friends and every 1 knew who was who, i was just like "w/e that was then and this is now, get used to it" but now seeing this article and seeing those news items just really makes me realize how much a pro-customer game it was back then. but now we have millions of players, hundreds of worlds, and to be considered really good ya gotta be a lvl 126... but i wish i joined back in '01. sure the autoers woulda been annoying, but oh well... This really makes me wanna find a game just outta its beta testing phase 91 RC!!! #332 to get it! Bloodyhand
Ah, the golden days were golden but from where I'm standing this grass is still green. No longer is the game centered on hard work and lots of time playing, in fact each new update seems to make skills even easier. But hey, old timers have to adapt. And for anyone who is interested the website holds many more hidden gems like the photo. Have a look at all the old news posts from the times of '2 new worlds added, total worlds now 10!' and of course the old god letters (with some funky graphics). Next time you are fishing, smelting or crafting, have a look at some of those.
SenorTamale
and of course the old god letters (with some funky graphics). i'm in the god letters! it was one of my happiest moments in RS methinks, i was just like omg  and  . what's more, i actually have pictures of all the interesting/ironic/coincidential sleep words i had.. 'impure' for example, and 'lobster' when i was fishing lobs... nice article though. there's definitely more you could've included, but obviously you have your time constraints and other things to do.. P.S. don't try to hide who that person is who got 85 mining, lol
remoteman
ah the good old days lol. i started back in beggining of '02 but quit six months later until june '03. that community spirit was great, and it was common to run into oother people that you new, and some mods with so little worlds. with over 100,000 people playing today the community sense has shriveld up and died, hooray for the time machine idea lol. great article, well written and well worth the read  "A disbelief in magic can force some poor souls into believing in authority and business"
