In statistics we are permitted to create our own 'cheat sheets' to bring into examinations with us. They restrict size (you get one sheet of paper, and it must be done by hand), but not the material. Also one of very few courses that allow you to bring any calculator s) you wish, provided that programmable ones are wiped at the beginning of an exam (so that you don't bring your whole text book with you). It's a lot more reasonable than having you focus on memorizing all the formulas, but I can't help but feel it's instead turning it into at least a partial test of your preparation skills rather than your stats skills. The way I see it, once your in the real world, the important things are knowing what can be done (like what are all the statistical tests and models you can run, and which ones apply in which cases), and knowing when you don't know what your doing. As my Mom once put it to me, if she doesn't know a specific procedure or policy at her job, she has giant binders full of every last one that will ever apply to her, and she can simply look them up. Big burly men don't come into her office and go "sorry mam, but you have to remember it from memory. Looking things up is cheating". Likewise, if one day I forgot how to do a regression analysis, I'd probably just look it up to jog my memory rather than sweating at my desk for 2 hours trying to remember that specific lecture. We always look back into our history and laugh at all the crazy things they used to do and believe in. I think our legacy of crazy will be our education system.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
What makes you certain that it is genetic predisposition and not parental conditioning? What makes you certain that parental conditioning is not genetic in origin? It's a sparse field of study, but there is this. We know that our brain chemistry and how our brain responds to certain chemical stimuli affect our behavior. The hypotheses would be that our preferences for a romantic relationship would be an aspect of our life where this is a factor, and we do know that our genetic code determines our chemical makeup and response. Behavioral genetics. I think the current working theory tends to be a combination of nature and nurture. If you look at our decisions as the output of a learning AI, then our decisions will be based on our experiences, because that's how such a program leans (finding connections between inputs and outputs, which is also the cause for such superstitions as lucky objects, as well as discrimination). But how a program learns depends on how the leaning program was initially setup, what the initial program itself looks like. Our experiences are nurture, but our hardware, our programming, that's nature. Logically, we probably have broad genetic predispositions towards just about every decision we will ever make, with the fine tuning set by our experiences. It's not really a one or the other sort of thing. It probably never is just one or the other. It is both, in varying ratios.

When you edit all the content out of your post, magical forum gnomes whisk it away to the dark realm. As a side note, while I was looking at those 6 types, I also discovered that people have genetic predispositions towards at least some of them, such as Eros and Storge.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
Yes and no. As best as I can tell, Storge when used to refer to a sexual relationship puts the specific emphasis on homogamy, or similarity. Philia puts the specific emphasis on familiarity. But yes, for all intents and purposes Philia is a storgic relationship. And obfuscator, I would agree with that. We are wired to evaluate peoples physical status sure, but it doesn't have to be the cause behind entering a relationship, even under totally voluntary circumstances.

Last night it was suggested to me that I should start a blog (after commandeering the staff chat for this purpose for a few minutes no less). Seemed like a good idea to me, since I actually throttle a lot of what I say around here because no one likes reading sthe forums and finding post, post, post, whoa a freaking novella! Not really sure if I care if anyone reads it or not. Mostly it exists as a diary for myself, as an outlet for the things I just need to get out of my system, and where people who are actually interested (if they exist) can read it at theair leisure Not that I'll be posting less here. There might be some cross posting between me and the blog actually. Being a fairly prolific writer when I want to be, I've managed to sort of get the ball rolling. There is also some hope that this might help me focus some of my energies and stop hopping game to game so much, which is a habit I would like to squash out of fear that it is manifesting in other parts of my life (actually, it's more like my life is manifesting in this habit, but still).

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
A storgic relationship is sexual, it's just...imagine being such goof friends with someone, who is likely very similar to you, that you want to spend the rest of your life with them; because your such good friends. It goes beyond friendship, but it is each others company, conversation, and time together that drive the relationship, not physical pleasures. Those are just a bonus on the side. Wikipedia has a decent explanation and it's not the one that list links too, it's the one that list is from, found here, though be warned, it almost sounds like a fortune cookie. It's still a decent overview of the what the six categories sort of stand for.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
@Ginger Warrior Agree with most of that, though relationships can grow out of friendship, called a storgic relationship (from the word storge, which refers to love from familiarity and similarity. The relationship puts the emphasis on friendship above everything else, including the sexual component, and the relationship is borne of a bond of understanding rather than physical attraction. It is one end of the extreme spectrum of balance between emotional and physical, placing the entire emphasis on an emotional bond. The best example I can think of off hand are in home caregivers, where it's not entirely uncommon for hired caregivers to develop feelings for the people they take care of. This would generally be a storgic relationship. The problem most people would encounter is the lack of passion, which really comes more from a sexual attraction and focus, and this can lead to boredom. On the far end opposite storge, you have relationships that revolve entirely around a sexual component (such as trophy wives), where the focus is (almost) entirely on a physical bond with little to no emotional bond. I figure the norm is some balance between the two extremes, so you need more than friendship, you need a physical bond as well, so you shouldn't expect a romance to develop as an extension of friendship, because there is no expectation that you fill the other criteria needed for a relationship of that sort. EDIT: actually, the good people at wikipedia have a list of 6 styles. You don't neccesarily have to agree with the classifications, but it seems like a reasonable classification of how people love to me. Eros would be what I was talking about as 'normal': Eros – a passionate physical and emotional love based on aesthetic enjoyment; stereotype of romantic love Ludus – a love that is played as a game or sport; conquest; may have multiple partners at once Storge – an affectionate love that slowly develops from friendship, based on similarity (kindred to Philia) Pragma – love that is driven by the head, not the heart; undemonstrative Mania – obsessive love; experience great emotional highs and lows; very possessive and often jealous lovers Agape – selfless altruistic love Pragma was the one that really jumped out at me (as in pragmatic love). Not the one for me, but an interesting concept. And as clairifcation, you could also add Philia to the list itself, which would also be considered "true friendship". A friendship so deep that it is itself love. If that makes sense to anyone else.

A question, because I've never been clear on this. People will say that some name (and I can't give an example because nothing comes to mind) in chinese means let's say beutiful flower. Is the meaning attached to the name, or is the name literally "Beautiful Flower" in Chinese? My name apparently has a meaning in Greek where it comes from, though again I'm not sure if this is an attached meaning to a name, or if the name is derived from an actual word. In English, it doesn't mean anything becuase it's a name, not a word, and in this language names don't have meanings, and if they do or did, no one seems to know about them anymore. Of course, trying the name of someone else I know, It's listed with the same meaning in both Gaelic and English. So maybe there is just a whole culture of meanings for names that I am totally ignorant too.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
I agree with you, at least to a point. There is nothing wrong with taking a chance, being shot down, and maintaining a friendship. If your in the position where you really want to make the move, then please take a chance or it will eat you from the inside and drive you crazy. But if you can't take no as an answer, if you can't honestly see the person as just a friend after you strike out, then you need to take a step back until you can. If you don't, and you can't at least hide your feelings, you will destroy the friendship. And you also have to be receptive to them as well. It's not just awkward for the person being shot down, it's awkward for the shooter too. If your fine and they aren't, then again, you need to take a step back until your both cool.

Darn winter making it less obvious which scale I use. That would be -24C, which is actually about as cold as we ever go on the 'feels like' scale. I think we are in the coldes part of the season, at least here, right now. It seems to me it's the tail and of Jan and then at least the first half of Feb when we get the cold weather, with maybe even a couple days hitting -30 on the windchill scale. I'm very glad that we only reach these temperatures as windchill. @Saq, that's not so bad. When you said minor, I was thinking 14-16 (here that would be grades 9-11) which is the usual mix for that age range (here minor specifically means 16 and under). The grade 12's either party with the 11's, or try to get in on the university action.

Things that annoy the HELL out of you.
The city seems to be sending a bobcat to plow our sidewalk this year. I am very happy with this change, even if it can't seem to quite get all the snow away. Mostly just needs some salt thrown on the ground after it runs by.

Tip.it General Survey - 2013
The Tip.it administration is pleased to present the first ever general survey, a chance for all our users to provide us with feedback about how you use the forums and our site, as well as feedback on our staff and policies, in an effort to see how we can improve ourselves to better suit the needs and wants of our users. We are looking for feedback from all our users, whether you are new to the site or a veteran, whether you have a clean record or a rap sheet as long as you are tall. When filling out the survey, please be as honest as you like, don't worry about hurting our feelings. You are welcome to mention specific Staff members or events if you feel it it would be helpful to us, including naming administrators. We want to know how you truly feel, even if you have negative thoughts, as this is the best way for us to self improve. Only administrators will ever know what your answers are, and your name will be kept 100% confidential. Information relevant to specific staff groups will be shared with that group in the following manner: After we have received and reviewed the results of the survey, the administrators will compile a summary of of the replies detailing areas where you think we need to improve, as well as areas you think we are handling well. We may use bits and pieces of peoples responses in our summaries, but no names or identifying information will be included. It is these summaries that will be presented to the relevant areas of our staff. Please PM completed surveys to @Randox or @tripsis. Let the Survey begin! It's a survival world and I'm playing creative in it. My passions in minecraft are mostly designing underground bunkers, and playing with redstone. When I am done building at least most of the complex, the plan is to start exploring Thaumcraft in creative mode, which I haven't toyed with yet. At the end, it will be set up with underground quarries to help me farm for resources to pursue thaumcraft.

Rephrasing Muggi, after the just friends talk, you should cut off contact until you can be around her without desiring her. You need to be at a point where her presence isn't going to bother you, and having her in your life isn't going to get in the way of you moving on and eventually finding someone else. Just be very careful that you don't convince yourself you can do that, when you really just want to be around her.

We are having one of our cold days >.> -14, with -24 windchill. Just looking out the window makes you feel cold. Found the actual numbers for Kursk (and remembered the name) The battle of Kursk. I've always liked this narritive, though it's either counting every single person involved or exaggerating the man count. Armour and plane counts are accurate. It might also be counting the Russian reserve that was ready to go full Rambo if the Germans did the impossible and actually got through the defensive front. Germans didn't even get close. The losses were around a combined 6,000 tanks, 5,000 aircraft, and more than on million soldiers. About 80% of the casualties were Russian. Its a very neat battle to study, and also the definition of why you don't invade Russia.

Was looking at Sim City 5. The rage against Origin is pretty fierce around the net apparently. Not a huge fan for privacy concern reasons, though it seems to do some things better than steam. Anyway, it seems that the next Sim City will either be always on to play, or at least require an active connection to start, and people are flipping the proverbial table over it. I've also run into some interesting arguments between the pirates and the boycotters. By and large, the pirates don't seem to have a lot of support, but I do enjoy the points from both sides about how this kind of DRM drives people to piracy because they actually end up with a better game that costs less. Not really looking for a discussion (unless someone can tell me why people start frothing at the mouth whenever Origin is mentioned), but it's interesting to observe. You also run across stuff like this (http://www.techdirt....l-with-it.shtml), which always makes for a good read if nothing else. I love it for being such a fantastically complex issue that defies our knowledge of economics, because it is a completely new situation (the access, the non existent production cost, the free labour supplied by pirates and the internet in general, etc. is beyond our experience previous to this point in history). Logically, it must also call for an entirely new approach, and mostly I just love reading peoples theories because you end up with some really interesting proposed solutions and theories and it's just really cool. I think the most interesting things will be seen in maybe a couple decades when the executives are replaced by people from the pirating generation itself. People who understand the issue in a different way will have different approaches to deal with it.

The one that really stands out in my mind as missing from history is that Russia is I think the only country to ever successfully defeat a Blitzkrieg (by throwing more than one million troops into the defending line, and tens of thousands of artillery units and tanks and planes). And I second Tim. I'm not sure exactly how old you are, but as a general rule of thumb, if your legal and they're minors, that's just not cool. Minors are supposed to be trying to get into the older parties, not the other way around

Day 2 in the underground complex: I didn't get a whole more more hollowed out, though I am really enjoying the filler. Much faster than the builder, so very useful for rooms. Just clear than put in the walls. Think I might stick with the builder for my hallways though. I have however made some serious progress with the power complex, and now have a functional EU energy supply, from 9 HV solar arrays hidden in a fake tree on the surface (which I think is reasonably convincing if you don't stare at it, and it's quite out of the way). 12 MFSU's in the power storage, and another 4 along the supply line acting as power repeaters (my home is to mitigate some of the power loss through the cables, and if that doesn't work, 48 million EU extra storage). It does take an age to charge the system up, but it should be more than ample to deal with a day night cycle. For emergency power I have installed a nuclear reactor, with double containment. I still have to install the cables between that and the power storage room. Was originally going to use geothermal instead of the solar arrays, but the transposers and stuff to get it from the nether and into the pipes and all that jazz just game me a headache. For MJ power, I have what will probably end up being the nuclear counterpart set up, mostly for visual effect. Oil, water, and fuel storage, running a quadruple refinery, and a line of 13 combustion engines for high demand power generation. For primary, I am thinking a combination of redstone engines and electrical ones. Or I might also look into the new steam engines form rail craft and see if I can make sense of them, since they look like powerful yet reliable machinery. I do love the snaking pipes though, can't wait for the tanks and pipes to be full of goodies. I also notice looking at my plans for the first time since I started, I have totally missed the Atrium, and the power is not in the ideal place. I just did that first because having functional power supplies would be useful, and I need to know what infrastucture to build to power the base. Will need some tweaking the design now. I'll probably rejig the hall a bit so that you have to go through the atrium to hit power. Going to need blue power for that (which I have so far forgotten) since I want to build a nice big blast door. Probably use thermopiles for bluepower. I want to be running as few pipes to the surface as possible, and be able to power the base without any surface resources. I think I'll need to add a couple more rooms. One for thermopiles, and another for an emergency lava supply. That gives me geothermal generators to supplement the reactor, and the combustion engines are capable of running on lava at reduced capacity I believe (would make more sense with the stirling engines). Maybe I'll work out a nether lava supply entirely, in which case I can cut the solar array for a geothermal farm. This will take some thinking (which is why I make these posts actually, it's really so I can get my thoughts on paper to work through them).

Actually, that gives me an idea. Take the battery out of the car and bring it in for the night. The colder the battery the less power it can put out (slows down the chemical reaction). If you put it in and start the car while it's still warm, it will have a bit more juice to give you. Your going to lose all your presets though.

Do they still have block heaters in cars? I assumed they stopped putting them in since it's been like a decade since I saw a car with the cord sticking out through the grill. It's also never occurred to me to check for one under the hood. We might have ethanol in our gas, but if we do it's purely an environmental thing. It hasn't gotten cold enough here to freeze gasoline since the last ice age. As for my fingers, right now if I am going to be outside for a long time, I wear my mittens. My fingers in a group can still stay warm enough to be comfortable (and a heat pack works a lot better if it can get to my fingers). My thumb is typically fine all on it's own, or at least much slower to cool down, which is apparently the norm for the diagnosis.
