  1. I think passion can extend to negative emotions, not just positive ones. In fact, I think 'passionate' is an adjective that can be put to just about any emotion except ones like "relaxed" which would be oxymoronic. When people rage at dying on a video game it's because they're passionate about not dying, which could be for a whole number of reasons like wanting to win, KA/D spreads etc. Obviously I feel passionately for a whole number of things. I spend some of my free time updating an online encyclopaedia free-of-charge because I feel so passionately about my favourite sports team, and I feel passionately that anyone who wanted to know about them should be able to do so without having to pay for it. I also feel passionately about politics and modern issues, especially in regards to healthcare. As for the example you gave, I only feel passionately about winning a game. I'm not one of these people who'll ragequit a FPS game because I'm dying a lot; so long as my team is winning, I don't care. I guess you could say it's an attitude I take very strongly from watching sport a lot. So really it depends on the context within a certain match about whether I feel frustrated. If I turn a blind corner on Halo and get shotgunned for my troubles, I don't feel so mad because a) I wasn't really to know any better, and b) I can warn my teammates about their location. If I die while holding a shotgun while defending an advantageous position (S3 on Countdown, or something like that), I tend to feel worse because my death has given the other team a huge advantage and made my team's troubles that much worse. As for being the final death in a 74-75 Squad Slayer game... it doesn't really get much worse than that. I can go 20-5 or something and still feel awful in that situation. Of course the flipside of that is being getting the match-winning kill. Damn that's a sweet feeling. But I find getting mad doesn't really help because, yes, it boosts adrenaline but it also increases stress which can have a detrimental impact on concentration and focus.
  2. Maybe she'd prefer it if you barricaded the front door and lived as a hermit wallowing in self pity, until you reached the point where you'd rather go back to her than live in insufferable lonliness. Oh wait, that would be called jealousy, since you can move the [bleep] on and she can't.
  3. lol irony. Only one person complaining there because you had the sheer audacity to strike a civil conversation with her parents. You horrible person. Attention seeking. Penile plethysmography studies have proven that on average males are more aroused by lesbian pornography than they are when watching hetereosexuals. As soon as teenage guys hear those golden words 'I'm a lesbian' their heads go crazy with ideas, oblivious of course to the fact that being a lesbian (as opposed to being bisexual) inherently means they have no interest in males. So yeah, I'm guessing she was going round telling people she was a lesbian to get people thinking about her in "that way", only to open up the possibility she might be want to be "that way" with you. Question is: are you complaining? Of course the alternative explanation is peer pressure. If her friends were all lesbians she felt she had to "choose" to be one as well just to fit in. But that seems absurd.
  4. I'm going to bed. If posts could be liked on this forum, you'd be seeing a blue thumb right about now. My Last.fm tag cloud says indie rock, alternative, electronic, indie pop, post-punk, and some dance. (The one from Cascada is hot. /debate). But seriously, I prefer to like artists over genres. It's just the artists I like tend to produce music with similar instruments and topics.
  5. I don't think there's much debate that RuneScape will be buried before 2016. Maybe not long buried, but it will be buried. A more appropriate question, in my opinion, is whether World of Warcraft will still be around. I'm no WoW fan, believe me, but I'd suggest it has more longevity left in the tank than RuneScape does simply because it's more popular and therefore has more momentum within its community.
  6. I'm not sure anyone was really arguing, I honestly don't feel strongly enough about this to argue. I'm not entirely convinced people were even attempting to analyse the situation for anything more than it really is. I'd say the same thing to anyone going through a messy break-up: Just stay clear, it's easier for both sides. You want a source for that? Well sadly you can't put a URL on personal experience, not just myself but friends as well.
  7. Yeah, her parents have no right to meddle, granted. But then that also works two ways. If Sam's talking to her parents then frankly it's none of her business either. I don't know... whatever. I think the point is, when you talk to them you're essentially communicating with her by extension, so... don't, even if the reasons are benign.
  8. So long as it doesn't create an imbalance within the combat environment I don't see a problem. I'm not really up-to-date with this story, but if they'd have released something like the Barrelchest Anchor as a promo item and slapped a 1 Attack/Strength requirement then we'd have problems. As it is, I gather that isn't the case and there's nothing wrong with wielding equipement for aesthetics rather than the usual unnecessarily deep stat analysis which sometimes plagues RPGs in general, especially Japanese ones. It's like how Nintendo run promo Pokemon through Toys 'R' Us, but for some mystical reason this is only limited to the US despite it also being a UK-wide chain. Reality is, yes the Pokemon received through those events are powerful on paper, but thanks to other complex factors within the metagame (natures, IVs, tiers), they aren't likely to upset the balance of the competitive main game. If you ever see a Deoxys-S leading a team in a D/P Uber match you can be pretty damn sure it was hacked anyway, spare a ~1:2.5 billion chance the game might've randomly produce a 'perfect' Deoxys, which isn't Nintendo's fault. It's not like American players would be getting something everyone else are incapable of getting for themselves. The recon helmet in Halo: Reach is a decent example but not one that really holds much weight since equipment on Halo holds no stats and has no effect on in-game performance (except incredibly minor things like Party effect alerting people to your death or something). Still, you could argue the Ornate Katana's stats are so meager it doesn't really have any effect either. Promos are good. Imbalance is bad, and Jagex haven't created one here. On an unrelated note, I find it funny a katana holds a negative stab bonus, having watched Kill Bill (I think the schoolgirl uses one on that seedy drunken guy--she definitely doesn't bludgeon him to death anyway).
  9. Tenacity and stubborness are both sides of the same coin. For what it's worth, that persistence might come in useful in another relationship at another time with another person. The fact of the matter is, this girl was clearly incapable at dealing with a break-up properly--no amount of stubborness or lack thereof was ever going to change that. Definitely the right thing to do (re: deleting her from contact). Makes the whole thing clearer for everyone if you give space for people to deal with their emotions.
  10. So I used Ferrothorn in the Super Subway for the first time today and... yeah, I see what all the fuss is about. With Magnezone and Starmie in 2nd/3rd there's a big weakness to Fighting and Ground. Also, both are running HP Fire, so Magnezone's Flash Cannon doesn't really offer anything Starmie can't already do quite comfortably. I'm thinking Magnezone for Reuniclus or Sigilyph| just to add more bulk and cover weaknesses to EQ and Focus Blast. Thoughts?
  11. She's probably got hundred friend requests on FB by now from pubescent, smelly RS players. Hide her name lol ;) But seriously, if anything it was you who gave her a chance, not the other way round, and she's not taken it. That's not your fault. Forget about it and find someone else more worth your time.
  12. 8 hours is ridiculous and he's most likely trying to scare you into action (which has clearly worked), but in any case you want to be stepping up the work rate to make sure you're keeping on top of the workload. University/college (US) can be very fast paced at times--easy to get left behind once you slack off, and much harder to catch up again. Just follow the study tips everyone provides, find out what's best for you and constantly make sure that you're doing enough to cope.
  13. I think it's important to remember that education isn't meant to prepare someone for a specific job--that's what training is for--but is meant to provide people with a wide range of skills which they need to succeed through life in general. If you look at surveys asking employers who take on new graduates what they think their new employees are lacking, hardly any of them say literacy skills. They're more likely to suggest a lack of commercial awareness and critical thinking. In other words, graduates can read and write and have 'crammed' well enough to pass exams, but they don't have a clue about the world around them and cannot analyse new information in order to evaluate what it means. With that in mind, perhaps it's time we focused less on reading textbooks in a classroom and actually gave children some more hands-on, or even vocational, experience. Obviously this would only be appropriate for teenagers rather than anything younger. At the very least we could teach them be become more business-savvy, perhaps making business studies a mandatory requirement in high school (US)/college (UK).
  14. I generally translate 'FWB' as 'I want all the fun times without the emotional commitment and without generally caring about what you think'. To be honest, if any one of my exes asked to be FWB, I'd tell them where to [bleep] off. Just my opinion.
  15. Isn't it more useful to think of 'good' as a spectrum rather than a black-and-white adjective.
  16. Then if you're fed up with mismanagement, blame the managers. Stop blaming workers and irresponsibly demanding an end to their basic democratic right to ballot and protest, and target those who actually deserve to be held to account. Like it or not, your local postman isn't responsible for the local allocation of tax budgets and their accountability thereof. That you seem to think otherwise indicates to me your intentions are well-meaning, but thoroughly misguided. At the end of the day, no credible trade union decides to strike 'for teh lulz'. They too are fed up with mismanagement, so why aren't you trying to explore what they're trying to do to bring local officials to account?
  17. There's nothing ironic about public sector workers paying taxes. They are citizens like anyone else and therefore should have to shoulder some of the tax burden. In that one sentence alone you've shown me you know nothing about the basic principles which underpin tax systems. The burden on individuals in any tax system should be decided by how much they earn, not who they happen to work for. As for the corruption comment, you must be incredibly naïve to think corruption only exists in local government. Only difference between private and public sector there is we get a chance to vote them out democratically. The same cannot be said for consumers and CEOs.
  18. I know nothing about Smogon's metagame but aside from the lack of ground immunity, surely Jolteon is closest to Zapdos for sweeping. Pseudo-BoltBeam combo via HP Ice, with Shadow Ball and Volt Absorb to absorb T-Wave. He makes a good snack for Dugtrio though.
  19. I don't tend to think that people are either 'bad' or 'good', but rather some people have more negative traits than others. I don't see a false dichotomy between 'good' and 'evil' as generally being any different to this thread. The thing about saying 'detrimental to society' is that as far as the NSDAP were concerned, killing six millions Jews as well as blacks, gays, socialists and other political activists was to advance their idea of society ruled and controlled by the Volksgemeinschaft. Surely intentions and motives should be condemned, but their intentions were good as far as they were concerned.
  20. So managers in local government have no responsiblity to make sure their workers are being paid fairly? Seems disingenuous to blame public sector workers for basically being ripped off. When not come out and just say you hate local government?
  21. I'm not actually aware of what the postal workers are striking over. The original quote doesn't really explain. However, I still support the principle; wages are consantly being renegotiated depending on company profits, performance targets and inflation, see I don't see how accepting a specific wage is a point at all really. Also, working conditions and pensions are in a constant state of change too, it's like pinning jelly to the wall. Fact is, wages and conditions change regardless of any priorly expressed agreement, and if these deteriorate, workers absolutely have a right to protest.
  22. I support the principle that in a free economy, workers have a right to negotiate their work and paying conditions, and have the right to withdraw their labour if no agreement can be found.
  23. It's interesting technology, but you really have to wonder whether letters need to be 3D for the printer to merit widespread use.
  24. OK well, we'll just cry foul play at China from our electrically-powered (predominently coal- and oil-fueled) laptops over our electrically powered Internet routers while consuming food imported from the Ukraine and South America contained in packaging, only 25% of which we'll bother to put into a recycling box, and we'll all continue to feel sorry for Eric Pickles on the week he had to withdraw plans for weekly bin collections which he declared as a 'right' over fortnightly bin collections which are there to bully us into recycling but, despite our moral conscience, we couldn't seem to care less about. Then we'll all claim the moral high ground for "gradual change" whilst spewing patriotic vitriole. There is plenty we can do for ourselves first without blasting China for being unable to keep control of ballooning waste inefficiency in one of the fastest growing economies on Earth, yet strangely when it comes to election time, hardly anyone wants to hear what the Green Party has to say. All I'm saying is, while our own record on waste and the environment is as pathetic as it is, I'd withhold on telling China how they should behave.
  25. Oh right. Because people in the westen world, the UK especially, are so good when it comes to waste efficiency. I'm not saying China's in the right here but seriously...
