Drugs, the ghettos problem or everyones problem
While we have the NHS in my country, anything that involves someone's health ultimately affects all of us because we have to collectively pay for the treatment. I don't oppose that principle - free healthcare paid for by the taxpayer is important. Yes, drug issues are usually localised, but they are a national issue.

Inmate claims he's to fat to put to death.
:wall: That doesn't mean 8 lives minimum will be saved... it indicates the unreliability of that source. Hell, even the final paragraph says other factors may have contributed to the results. It evidently wasn't even a scientifically correct study. Even within the margin of error there are still lives saved. Every statistical analysis I've seen shows that it is a deterrent. Did you actually read a single word I said in that post? And have you even bothered to read up on sources you don't necessarily agree with? We can all go onto the websites of pressure groups, or do a search of Google, and copy-paste.

I would say "Your doing it wrong!"... but your not. Some things just can't be helped, such as they unpredictability of lag. Speaking of which, if you're prepared to deal with a bit of lag, I'll face you Alex.

Maybe, but this means nothing unless it's actually working. Which it isn't. It is a deterrent. Each execution saves 18 lives. http://www.cjlf.org/deathpenalty/DezRub ... rFinal.pdf The report admits a margin of error of +/- 10 on a conclusion of only 18, and you think this is reliable? A error margin of, in percentage terms, 55.5%? Are you for real?

Firstly, how can you say the death penalty is necessary when there are many countries around the world who have abolished the death penalty and still have a lower homicide rate than the US? Secondly, where is the proof it's even working as a deterrent? A life time in jail is a huge deterrent in itself. The only factor that might deter a potential murderer from carrying out the deed is how likely he's going to be able to get away with it. If the criminal believes the punishment for what he's done is escapable, it makes little difference what that punishment is.

Maybe, but this means nothing unless it's actually working. Which it isn't. Are you seriously telling me that the pursuit of revenge, by killing those who have seriously wronged society's laws, isn't sadistic? I've seen little pertinent common sense reasoning for the death penalty in the entire five pages of the thread thus far. All I've seen is a barrage of hatred against this man, and a few (baseless) blanket statements. A person rapes and murders two women as part of their career... what? Even if rehabilitation doesn't work (which it does in many cases, as is evident by the drug addicts, the alcoholics and the mentally ill prisoners which go through such schemes), how does this prove the need for retribution? You've punished the criminal by giving him all the lashings and indignity you want. So what? Have his opportunities improved coming out of jail? Has he gained any new skills in jail? Can he pursue a career so he no longer feels a need to turn to crime? No. Instead he's got a criminal record which deters any potential employer from taking him out of that crime.

Where do i go to check if i am...
Any doctor or even a nurse should be able to take a blood sample and have it sent off to a lab for testing. They'll then usually post the results back to your GP, who will inform you of the test's results and any action that may need to be taken. There aren't really any home-test kits for HIV, so I strongly suggest that if you even suspect you have an STI, you go see someone at your GP's clinic asap. They are bound by confidentiality so your close relatives shouldn't need to know if you don't want them to. I'd also suggest that if you've had a sexual relationship with anyone recently, you tell them so they can get themselves checked out too.

U.S. has a much higher rate of murders than Canada, and guess what, in Canada there's no death penalty. Ironic isn't it? I can't tell if you picked up on the sarcasm oozing from my post. In any case, I agree with your point. Retribution works in cycles, hence why it should not be the primary aim of a sentence. Which brings me to meol's question. The aims of prison should always be vindication (in order to make society safe) and rehabilitation (in order to ensure society remains safe once their time in prison is over). We can get as right-wing and militant about this as we like, but retribution simply does not work as an effective deterrent - the proof for this statement is in the stats me and sbrideau2000 have mentioned - and doesn't reform a man for his post-prison life.

Inmate claims he's to fat to put to death.
Hitler wouldn't have been able to massacre the Jews if he was in jail, or on some desolate island in the middle of nowhere, as has happened with some political leaders in the past. To say the death penalty would have been the only way of preventing him from persecuting minorities in Germany is a blinkered view to say the least, especially since in reality, the death penalty wasn't even a significant factor in stopping the Nazi movement. No one here is suggesting that the alternative to the death penalty is to become overly liberal and let them out onto the streets again. While it isn't desirable that the tax payer forks out to keep these people alive, such is the price of upholding both the law and anti-homicide values simultaneously. Think about it. If the state itself responds to a murderer by taking his life in public view, then how does this reinforce the message that taking life is wrong? Indeed, not only is it entirely hypocritical and ineffective (through fear of sounding repetitive, homicide rates are three times higher in the US than in England and Wales where the death penalty has been outlawed for decades), it actually gives the impression that taking life is more acceptable given a certain circumstance, rather than the impression we should be giving; that taking life should be the final option, bar risking your own.

And of the executioner? He too has taken a human life; and whatever way you look at it, there is an alternative to the death penalty. Should the executioner also have his human rights removed by your logic? You've punished a murderer... by murdering him. I'm not quite sure that sets a better example. A country's laws apply to all inhabitants of that country. You merely living there is a sign that you agree to, and will adhere to the law of that land. If you don't agree with the law, move to another country whose laws you do agree with.

What I've never understood is, if you're gonna kill him anyway, why care for dignity? The death penalty is hardly the epitome of humanity. Just fire a bullet at them and have done with it. You guys couldn't even resist making a show out of Saddam's death. Course, being the silly naive liberal I am, I would say that one way to avoid all this is to not have the death penalty in the first place. But I understand that if you didn't, rapists, terrorists and murderers would run riot... just like they do in all countries which have outlawed the death penalty.

Who is your favorite Tipiter?
I hardly feel there's anything wrong in listing out the people you like in a community. The problem is when you start saying the people you dislike, for obvious reason. It's not like we're all gonna hang around in clans and attack each other just because we feel friendly towards each other and have more differences with other people. People I like from OT... hmm: I_Goddess_I assassin_696 bluelancer Sumpta13 baron8000 (he never spends any time here these days) magekillr Barihawk Nadril Probably a lot more people who've slipped my mind.

Compulsory subjects at school > your thoughts?
Oh, do you really? When you write a paragraph like this: I realise you might not use English as your first language, but don't claim you 'excell' at it when your spelling and grammar are, frankly, awful. Pedantic argument aside, how is English irrelevant to the modern day world? You can have all the ICT skills going - it means nothing if you cannot effectively articulate what you are trying to say to another person. Likewise, you could use the skills gained in Mathematics to become an accountant, but if you lack the vocabulary to discuss a business's accounts with someone, you're going to be pretty hopeless in that job. Knowledge of the English language (perhaps French and arguably, Chinese Mandarin) is more vital to success in the modern day world than Maths or ICT. Skills mean nothing if you cannot communicate to other people.

Leeds/Reading Festival 2008
I saw Editors when they were supporting Franz Ferdinand. No one had heard of them, but they were amazing that night (probably better than FF) and I've never got bored of them since. Great band. I get the feeling that The Killers will just be like last year's Glasto, only shorter and with one or two new songs. Nothing special.

loyal or go with the flow?
If by loyal, you mean would I ask "How far?" when they say "Jump!", then no, I'm not loyal. Even the love I have with my family is conditional. That's not to imply the relationship I have with my family isn't strong, it's just I don't believe in 'blind following'. To date, they've only done good by me and I hope I've not mistreat them. I won't backstab my friends, but if one of them mistreats me, I have absolutely no gripes about severing the relationship between me and that person there and then. I've done it in the past, and I'm pretty damn good at it. I'd never leave a friend simply to follow the crowd though. I'm quite happy not being part of the crowd, to be honest.

Gun Control
Erm... it wasn't me who brought it up.

Gun Control
Irrelevant? Deflecting the issue onto the UK? You're the moron that keeps comparing the United States with your country. I understand patriotism, but do you really have to bring up your country in every topic? UK this, UK that. Hey guess what, that's not what the topic is about. And where did I say that I want to live in a COD4 style society? I only said banning firearms is not going to work. I'm comparing two countries with totally different laws and attitude towards gun control. It just so happens to be the UK and the US. If you cannot accept two ends of an argument, 4chan is calling you.

Gun Control
Of course there will always be immigrants and weapons that slip the net. Who said otherwise? Moron. The aim is to remove the gun culture. I'm not saying the UK is gun-free at all. I could go out on the street now and get a gun for £50.00 (and I'm not joking, I know exactly who to talk to). Half of all youths in this country feel the same way. It doesn't mean we're gonna run out and buy ourselves one though. We've learnt, through experience, that carrying a weapon attracts unwanted attention, and this puts you in more danger than the gun compensates for. The problem isn't that people have guns, it's that they feel it's acceptable to carry them out in public and even use them. Wow, you're comparing a country of around 50 million people living in an ISLAND in contrast to a country of three *HUNDRED* million people with some of the most impoverished nations just south of it. Here's a fun fact [wagon], there's at least TWENTY states in the United States bigger than your island. If your police state can't even control all of you with all your CCTVs around, you think the US Fed can? Do you have Tourettes or something? You just seem to uncontrollably shout complete irrelevance, that's all. You're also considerably richer than the UK, and I mean proportionality too. Policing is done on a state-by-state basis; you make it sound like I can live in LA, phone 911 and some guy from Boston will come round. There really is little excuse for the high homicide rates in the US, so don't attempt to deflect the issue onto the UK. You see, we also have illegal immigrants. Come and ask most Britons whether they feel like they live in a police state, and see whether even a quarter think they do. If you expect to live in country where absolutely no crime in exists, then you're just plainly ignorant. But since you clearly feel as though you want to live in a COD4-style "every man for himself" society, would arming these toddlers with guns have done much to deter to sick bastard that did this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunblane_massacre

Compulsory subjects at school > your thoughts?
I hated doing Shakespeare (the guy who wrote Romeo and Juliet, he's really quite famous you know) back in high school, but looking back on it, I see how necessary it was. It's about interpretation and being able to pick up plot lines and stuff from the words the characters are saying. Reading plays like Shakespeare is also important in developing an emotional awareness of other people. Shakespeare's works, Twelfth Night in particular, are still relevant to modern day life. I realise as a mechanic, you feel you only need to know about engineering and mechanics. That's simply not the case though. When a mechanic comes to fix my car, or a plumber comes to fix my pipes, or a builder comes to repair my house, I expect them to be able to write a letter. I also expect them to be able to do basic maths. Language and arithmetic are the two main ways we, as humans, communicate with each other. That's why doing Maths and English should be compulsory (and is compulsory over here). It's ridiculous only around a quarter of people in my high school left with the ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic (Grade C in both or above at GCSE level), yet over a half of them went into further education. The role of a school is not to equip you with a career - that's what a college or an apprenticeship is for. The role of a school is to equip you with the basics to get along in life.
