Evolution of PVP combat!
Maybe this could use gathering spots instead of randomized drops; say, a pile of wreckage that you can gather planks from, or a dragonstone vein for miners? The gatherers who get there get massively boosted EXP, the PvP'ers can pick them off for the rewards. It limits the risk for skillers (you can't lose EXP), so maybe there will be additional rewards for making it out alive? Say, you can get good mining EXP even if you get killed, but you lose out on the resources you gathered... But if you cross the wilderness wall (by jumping over it, not teleporting across), you get an even larger bonus that turns it into one of the best activities in the game? It's a shame the wilderness really isn't designed with cat-and-mouse gameplay in mind. It's a straight, flat battlefield when it could have plenty of room for traps and shortcuts to either make escapes tactical or to punish careless players. You could use that to reward experience. *note: Alg is the kind of gamer that likes using the environment as a weapon

Evolution of PVP combat!
You know, it probably could work. It's what Stealing Creation should have been, but dangerous: you have a team with both playstyles, skillers gather and process the resources, PKers try to get them from the other team while protecting their own. There could be an element of world-building involved: you find a resource-rich area and fortify the hell out of it, while the other team is outside in the woods building a siege weapon or something... It'd be hard to balance, of course, but if done right it could reward both sides (of one team/faction) for working together, rather than rewarding PKers who can one-hit an unarmored player or skillers who can click 'log out' before they get attacked. Kind of like an extreme version of DIY play, actually. Damn it, now I want to play this. BRB loading up Mount & Blade again.

Pictured above: the reason why PvP'ers and PvP-based content are fairly unpopular outside of PvP communities.

Except the risk v. reward in those areas never came close to being balanced, and now it would only be worse in that area. More to the point, non-PvP'ers just don't like being forced to go into the wilderness, and never have. That seems to be the one thing that never comes up.

Evolution of PVP combat!
But god-themed armor and overrides could add a layer of something to a PvP minigame or event, if not to the real wilderness. Hell, the world events would be perfect for that sort of thing, and they don't even have to be (fully - maybe you lose your shards?) dangerous.

Seems like the better solution would be to nerf that ability, then.

You say that like requiring a 99 stat to get a T60 item is a good thing... But of course, that's a topic for a different thread entirely.

And now all I can think is that they missed the opportunity to show that the churches and teachings of each god had changed in the time since the gods were banished. Say, have Zamorak return and be disgusted at the kinds of people that call themselves Zamorakian, whether because they put too much emphasis on evil instead of chaos, or because they're chaotic stupid, or because they don't care about social darwinism and are just using his name as an excuse to be puppy-kick-evil. We did get a short hint of that, where he disavows Dawn's actions, but that was downright out-of-character when his followers among the Mahjarrat are considerably worse and when every other quest that involves his faction has actions like that. So much wasted potential...

It'd be really cool if they could actually show this, rather than tell it. Maybe it's just me, but when your character is more visibly demonic than this guy, controls monsters and factions that are unambiguously evil, and generally encourages evil acts as a way to strengthen the survivors (if he's not just doing it himself)... Yep, that sounds chaotic neutral to me, no question about it! :-P Not saying they can't pull it off, but considering their attempt to make Saradomin sympathetic... They have a lot of work to do.

Barrows - Rise of the Six
Not in all the cases. But even in the cases where your point is true -- it only reinforces what I am saying because in those cases the best gear was so cheap that it was essentially welfare gear cheap. But you still needed to be in the 1% to get any kills. It was so accessible that anyone could do it, but if you couldn't out-muscle whoever else was in the world you weren't getting any kills. That really didn't start to loosen up until part of the way through the Nex era, if not until they released instanced worlds. Sure, gear wasn't an issue, but I'd think that this is a better mechanic than one that fostered a lot of the social problems that you (and other Truthscape transplants, self included) tend to endlessly rant about. :-P

Barrows - Rise of the Six
The trouble is the part that comes before, though. Boss hunting is fun, but getting to the point where you can isn't, and it has more to do with the way the game is designed than anything else. We're still playing with a lot of content built around Classic-to-early-RS2's balance and endgame, rather than today's boss-heavy one. You spend hundreds of hours getting skills (As it was when getting a skill to 99 was the end goal) to spend hundreds of hours getting gear (which is the end goal today), and the first half of that may as well be a different game entirely. You can argue that there's a lot of content throughout most of the game, but pretty much everything that isn't from 90-99 is filler. ...Maybe part of it is the level progression? You just don't spend enough time at low levels for there to be any meaningful content there, and high-level content takes long enough to get that they aren't balancing the game with it in mind. Perhaps if training skills took the same amount of time but was more evenly distributed? Then throw in the same kinds of content at every level, so there isn't such a massive jump from skilling to bossing? I'm sure that this explanation isn't doing the idea justice: generally, you'll spend more time as a low-level, but there will be more to do at low levels, and it gives them a chance to balance the game so that upgrading from one tier to the next doesn't multiply the required time by a factor of 40 for a minimal reward. Maybe it will still take 400 hours to get T99 gear, but that time could be spread out throughout the rest of the game: say, the jump from T95 to T99 would be 100 hours, because you did the other 300 at earlier levels. It'll still be grindy, but players will feel like their grinding is going somewhere. Maybe it's just me, but I've found 'smaller' goals less daunting for this reason. The end goal is the same, it's just broken into manageable chunks. As it is, you're pushed to spend a fairly heavy amount of time on the game all at once, without much chance to break it up as you grow.

Alg Plays: Pokemon Vietnamese Crystal 11
I don't like this part of the game for some reason, and my reasons are most likely petty and irrational. Luckily for me, this time I had many things to make it tolerable, if not enjoyable. In order: 1: Funny dialogue 2: New and fun team members 3: The ability to speed past the boring parts 4: A highly inspirational soundtrack of Queen and ballet. Without further ado! [spoiler=DON'T STOP ME NOOOOW] Wheat grinding. The RAGE LAKE contains plot, so yes. It also contains ELFS I didn't even know you could find the second here. In the last part we discovered LIDEL. In this part, we discover LIDEL's evolution. [spoiler=Bonus image!] And that gave YIFU enough experience to envolve. But to what? [spoiler=Major spoilers!] And now that that's done, I have back tracking to do. I found an item on the way. However, I'm not posting the item get scene, because there are some lines that even I won't cross. You'll have to use your imagination for that one. And another catch on the way. ...I'm not sure what's going on here. Or here. But I made the most of it. Time to Back to the plot. ONE TRAVEL MONTAGE LATER THE FIRST ALTERNATE LUMI-EGGPLANT INEQUALITY COLOR BASIS ELF Except not really. This might look like a botched translation of the item "Red Scale", but it's actually a near-perfect translation... From Latin. I really don't know. I know even less. And now I've been conscripted. This will be on the test. The test that should have happened three chapters ago. On the way back, Pokemon games usually have an item called "Good Rod". This isn't it. So here we are back at the plot. And... Gentlemen? These gentlemen will attack you if you step in front of those statues. Normally, you can find the switch for that after the first one. I wanted a bit more experience. But all good things must end. Meaning that they'll still attack, just not automatically like before. So now I have to find passwords. And got two for the price of one. Now to find the... Second? Third? I don't know anymore. This infiltration is rudely interrupted by ??? But I don't wanna be the guy. final image lost because swoon Step 1: enter passwords Step 2: Talk to birds again little strawberry me baby Step 3: Combat. Step 4: ...Breast? The final part of this arc involves disabling their machine by attacking the bombs that power it. That's not Vietnamese Crystal shenanigans, that's canon. But I'm not going to let the game railroad me like that. [spoiler=NEXT TIME... ON POKEMON VIETNAMESE CRYSTAL] I go ice skating! [spoiler=Behind the Scenes] As for where that came from... It's a very long story.

Barrows - Rise of the Six
Would I be wrong in saying that gear makes the biggest difference in the beginning, when you need the extra stats to give you some room for error? It's always been possible to do a lot of these elite bosses in subpar gear (Except weapons now?), it's just never been efficient. Re: Yoko: Pre-EoC there were other high-level perks that you really couldn't substitute, though: things like the yak's second inventory worth of sources, OVL's boost+stat restore and spirit shield damage reduction kept the non-elite out of Nex in the beginning, just as T90 does here.
