I kind of have mixed feelings. Where does one draw the line? I think I would like some humor present in my funeral. Not excessively, but I just think it would be better for my family and friends to smile and chuckle than to weep the entire day. On the other hand, I think your death is the most awkward moment of your existence, and I'm thankful that I won't be alive to bare it. The thought of people looking at my dead body is almost humiliating. Enough to say some sort of respect is warranted, at least to spare my dead body from the aura of awkwardness. :-?

When she tells you to stop stalking her, it actually means she likes you. Of course girls say that. But in reality they want to be known as the emotional one, so when a guy one-ups them it's usually not a good thing. It's probably best to ignore what they say they want and just give them what you want to give them. If the relationship lasts for a while, then it will probably last for a longer while since you're obviously giving them what they really do want. If it doesn't, trial and error my friend. ;)

Not every consequence is going to be "self-serving" - when you take into account mistakes and whatnot. However, your perceived expectation of the result is the driving force behind the deed.

Have you actually ever seen a police officer talk someone out of suicide? Have you actually even seen someone tell a police officer, "Yes, officer. I've been very depressed lately. I want to kill myself. Please help me!" There's a difference between what you might see on TV and what actually happens in real life. I've already said it a few times. Police officers can make the issue worse because 1) it's degrading and because 2) they usually don't know what they're doing since they aren't qualified. It's not really the kind of attention most suicidal people are looking for anyways. It would be much more efficient to have those extra police patrol the streets or do anything else besides going to investigate everyone who mentioned the word "suicide", no matter the context. There are literally millions of times where, if the police were to be in the right place at the right time, crimes would have been prevented. You're essentially saying that it's not that important if we waste the manpower of the police force. It IS important because the more available police officers we have, the higher our chances of stopping crimes we have. Police are qualified for stopping crimes - not talking kids out of suicides. If you want to talk someone out of a suicide, at least get a psychologist. Even they have a lot of trouble trying to comprehend what's going on in someone else's mind. PS: This isn't just limited to when people joke about suicides though. Police need to get their priorities straight with many things. Stop imprisoning harmless people who were merely smoking pot. Stop charging people for going 2 over the speed limit. Get your priorities straight, dammit! (Sorry for the rant. I think the idea of police is a pretty nice concept, it's just the execution of it which needs a lot more work if we are to truly ensure justice in an efficient manner.) Exactly. I absolutely hate when people say there is nothing suicidal people can do to stop being suicidal. It's actually encouraging suicide instead of treating it as a problem that needs to be fixed and that can be fixed. Not only is it illogical, but it's also reinforcing those suicidal thoughts of hopelessness into their minds, which is one of the main reasons why they wanted to kill themselves in the first place. They already feel hopeless. What's the logic behind making them feel more hopeless? It's so counterproductive. Oh and this opinion is coming from "psychologists". Imagine how badly a police officer could mess things up. These people can be very fragile, so one wrong sentence can make things a million times worse.

I don't even see a negative connotation in there. I'm quite happy that I'm my own butler. Who else would know what I wanted better than myself? :P It satisfies him to know that he preserved a beautiful landscape. He is painting to reach that perceived satisfaction. Even though the intentions might not directly involve himself (like in the cases where he's making money or bettering himself), the fact that he has an intention at all is what points to the psychological egoism. Just like a soldier who jumps on a live grenade to save his men - knowing that he saved his men is his satisfaction.

They probably see the psychological and emotional comfort of not being alone as more important than their physical well-being. Since we have all the medicines and stuff we need, it makes no difference right now. It's as if we are "evolving" in the technological sense, since it is increasing our chances of survival. But once we run out of resources, it will nip us in the behind. Our immune systems will probably suck. If you think about it logically (something we humans are capable of), love just seems more 'special' when you don't have to share your partner. Well, animals such as cats and dogs attack things for the purpose of exercise and fun. As for humans, I would think so. Anytime a fight breaks out, people will crowd around to watch. Very few people are actually opposed to violence, even though a lot of them say otherwise. Of course there are some who really are opposed to it, so there could be exceptions. Or maybe they're just trying to suppress it? Don't know. I wouldn't consider myself a violent person, but if the situation calls for it, such as my family being attacked, I would feel that resorting to violence is the right thing to do. Sometimes violence can be efficient. So I guess you could call violence a tool. To get what you want, to entertain, to show dominance, whatever. If you drag certain people into certain situations, they will most likely use that tool to alleviate their problems. So I guess it's not really a "need" or "urge" as much as it is a "means". With more population, there also comes more friends and comfort. And yes, there's more crime in the cities but with all the people and cops around, you're more likely to be saved if you were being attacked or something. In a rural area, nobody could hear you scream for miles. Maybe we just feel more comfortable in larger numbers. Interesting questions. Nice thread. :thumbup:

So what's your take on the elderly, young, and handicapped? Just let them all starve? Some people don't have the means to acquire things the hard way. I don't think it makes it "wrong" to take the shortcut and just go to grocery stores. As far as the killing animal thing goes, there are plenty of species who will hunt and then share their catch with their family. You don't have to kill it to deserve it. That principal is found even amongst animals. We need to eat to survive. If that means taking shortcuts, sure, why not?

I hear this a lot. "its not harassment because its true", "I only mentioned the stereotype because its true for him/her", "i'm not being mean, I'm just stating fact". The issue has never been whether or not a statement was true. It was why that statement was said in the first place. The excuse of "its okay because its true" is a front to hide your intention of getting that point across. That, of course, doesn't even touch upon whether or not its true. Example: Elementary school student gets called into principle's office for making fun of a fellow student because he is overweight. His reasoning? "because he is". Yes, I chose an example from an elementary school student for a reason. While I do believe it is fine to view a certain type of people a certain way, so long as you have the scientific evidence for it, I don't think it's right to treat them all a certain way. A generalization is just merely a generalization - it does not imply that every person of that certain type is a certain way. Only that they generally are. Which means harassing someone just for being a certain race is not fine. General: of, pertaining to, or true of such persons or things in the main, with possible exceptions; common to most; prevalent; usual: the general mood of the people. So my point is that if you see a lion, it is fine to be scared and cautious because there's a good possibility it could attack you (it is fine to view them a certain way), but it's wrong to shoot it because you assumed it would attack you (it is wrong to treat them a certain way, until they prove that they are that way). It's the difference between your thoughts and your actions.

So many people I've come across through RS and Myspace talk about "killing themselves" on a regular basis - not because they're truly suicidal, but because it has become a figure of speech which implies the same as "F my life". The connotation that suicide has amongst our society today is a lot different than it was a few generations ago. Just like the word "gay". Today, it's more common that the word "gay" is in reference to something lame or stupid as opposed to an actual homosexual person. In that case, the problem lies within the way legal systems handle suicides. I don't think it should be the company's responsibility to report stuff like that. Reminds me of the Genovese murder. 30+ people heard her screams but no one reported it, so she died. Yeah, it was a messed up scenario, but are you really going to charge those people for minding their own business? We the people never signed up for being obligated to ensuring justice, or else we would all be cops.
