[exploit patched] Disable Java NOW, users told, as 0-day exploit hits web
Java and Javascript have (almost) nothing in common, besides the name, and the fact that they are both "programming" languages of a sort. The above poster mis-understood the no-script plugin/extension. NoScript prevents Javascript, and it *might* be able to prevent Java as well, not sure. But that is a different setting. Just to make it clear: "Java and Javascript are similar like Car and Carpet are similar." - Greg Hewgill If you want to be absolutely sure, disable the plugin.

Jagex: Thinking of Gambling Alternatives?
The only thought I have about this is something about morals...but that has been defenestrated by now.

The Big Chinchompa & Boost Your Bank! (28th of August)
Agreed. I found it offensive that Jagex scrapped the entire plan because players didn't want it to have bank space. Really? Forego your community's security because some people whined about a proposed incentive? And then turn around and implement it with an obviously larger advantage. The amount of fail with this move cannot be contained in a square kilometer. Also found this post - for those that don't know what I'm on about: http://forum.tip.it/topic/238938-10th-july-2009-the-jagex-anti-hijack-system-and-devblog/

The Big Chinchompa & Boost Your Bank! (28th of August)
...so why the hell can't players have an RSA dongle now?! I mean, you're already selling the advantage of extra bankspace! You may as well give players something useful out of the deal!

[exploit patched] Disable Java NOW, users told, as 0-day exploit hits web
I wonder how I'll ever get any work done...we exclusively use Java. Oh wait, wrong version; shouldn't have to worry about this particular exploit... I also didn't see any mention of if OpenJDK 7 was affected. It may be worth looking into (a guess says it may be), but if it isn't, then it's a pretty good alternative to Oracle JVM.

BTS#15: Al Kharid: Rebuilding a City (Jagex Video)
I'm liking that they're working on actual content! To be less sarcastic, it does feel like Al-Kharid is tons improved over what it was before. We even get to see Hassan in-game finally.

Bank of RuneScape; Leaked Update?
Perhaps, but it doesn't explain the building.

Bank of RuneScape; Leaked Update?
To play Devil's Advocate - The Bank of RuneScape is the canonical name of the banking system in-game. Perhaps it's a revamp to the banking system instead? </optimism>

Bank of RuneScape; Leaked Update?
Kneejerk reaction: Selling GP. It would not surprise me in the slightest if it were the case. Rational reaction: Wait, why do I care? I don't play anymore...

Well Known RWT'rs banned.
I've heard a lot about these "advanced systems" that Jagex employs to catch nefarious players like this. You know, this is easily the kth time I've heard them mentioned, and for some reason, it's always the 1 + kth time around that finally gets these guys. I really don't think that this is anything more than a PR stunt, especially given that players have been reporting for years that these sorts of groups were illegitimate. Congratulations Jagex; you've finally got your man. Only took you two years.

Certain Corrupt Mod Oblivious to Recent Update?
First - discussions rarely need to delve into slippery slope. They may certainly devolve into that, but need to? I don't think so. If it was a debate or a constructively written grievance with this update, RU may not have been the best place - it would belong in Rants. (Interestingly enough, RU has the most traffic of any board, and more people will post there, assuming what they've said is "recent" - when sometimes that's not the case.) Now I'll state this with my experience, so take it with a grain of salt - a general belief is that if a thread doesn't pertain to an immediately recent update, then it doesn't belong in RU. I didn't operate hard-line in that fashion, but it is a kind of generalization. I mean, if I were to start a topic about SoF from when it first started, that's obviously not a recent update, so it wouldn't belong. Second, if it was a suggestion, what was it doing in RU? If it was a constructive rant, what was it doing in RU? These are views that must be considered. Third, and finally, taking action against trolls isn't a vendetta. There's a general sentiment that, if a user is trolling the forums in any manner as so determined by the FMods, there may be one or two FMods that make an effort to monitor that forum or user in an effort to maintain civility. Creating multiple topics because you feel that you're doing the right thing, but are very clearly "in the wrong", doesn't make anything better. I'm not saying that Jagex's FMod system is worth its weight in gold; it's workable but there's clearly room for improvement. There are holes and inconsistencies galore. However, my gut is telling me that your particular case doesn't fall into an edge case.

The Bot-o-meter; How do you feel about Jagex's actions towards bots?
The problem is that the data has a sort of bias. The drops also account for the two week grace period that players get when their membership lapses. In this time, there could be minor-scale bans that we don't know about. Ultimately though, I'm a bit tired of Jagex's methodology to get rid of bots. Clearly there's no deterrent, and banning high profile accounts isn't as stunning to the community's psyche as it once was. It may be better for them to move to a different platform altogether to relieve the player base of the long rooted issues that still remain.

Certain Corrupt Mod Oblivious to Recent Update?
My thoughts have been included in the appropriate thread where they should be (http://forum.tip.it/...ults-970-spins/). Just because you don't agree with someone doesn't mean they're corrupt. Being corrupt is "Having or showing a willingness to act dishonestly in return for money or personal gain." This forum moderator has nothing to gain from this. Their only goal is to keep order on the RSOF based on the rules and proceedures given to them by Jagex. I don't blame them one bit for getting rid of those people who don't know how to follow a few simple rules. There might be a minority here, but a recent update really does qualify the day, or the day after the update was announced, vs that same moderator posting about an update announced a month ago the same day the SOF convert items to gold update came out. As someone else said, it might just be Jagex ordering their mods to hide posts that are against their microtransactions. My gut feeling (and experience as a former RSOF Forum Mod) ask these two questions: Was the discussion about the most recent update to SoF without borrowing themes from the past updates? Did it read more like a rant and not an actual discussion about the topic at hand? FMods rarely act on vendetta. If the topic was more of an nonconstructive rant and less of a discussion, it would deserve to be closed. If it were a constructive rant, it'd be moved to the stupidly hidden forum Rants board. If it were a true discussion about the recent update, then it'd have stayed open. Jagex's FMod policy may seem lax, but for the most part, they check up on closed threads. If it didn't deserve it, then it'd be overturned. But...ranting about it here isn't going to do much of anything.

Your New Secret Weapon: Clan Avatars! 14 Aug 2012
I see the need to put in new features for the clan citadels, but something that's this decorative could have served its place in a patch note. Not too much to write home about this week...

Kid gets robbed over RSGP
Diverging thoughts here: This is really nothing new. Players have been hacked and physically intimidated before 2007 to the tune of GP/rares/whole accounts. This is what the community voted for (to the tune of 91%). cheek(tongue);

Kid gets robbed over RSGP
This ain't the first time a story like this has emerged. The only thing now is that fewer people see RWTing as one of the three "major evils" that continue to harm the community. I'm glad that no one was hurt over this, but perhaps he'd like to make an honest, less potential-gun-pointed-at-head-oriented living doing something else?

What really happened regarding the GP dupe - 80B/HR
Well, at that point, the argument's pretty much moot. People will do different things based on their views of morality, which has become evident in this thread alone. Also, it could be argued that since Jagex's morals have been a bit lax since SoF, players don't enjoy walking on "the straight and narrow" if the company that asks them to do it pulls a "do as I say, not as I do". Speaking for myself, I wouldn't exploit this bug for raw profit. I already have a good job, and even with student loans and other bills, no matter how tempting that much money is, it wouldn't feel right to me. Even if I didn't have a job, I wouldn't do this. I'd much rather talk with Jagex about it and see if I could secure a decent paying gig fixing this sort of exploit. You could say it's for profit at that point if I'm making a living by exploiting and fixing bugs, but since I wouldn't run afoul of the moral police, I would disagree.

Gold Dupe Glitch...
It's a bit of a shame that Jagex didn't either Use a new currency to be traded for GP later, to avoid this issue, and/or Test their code to avoid this breakage. Then again, this has been their track record - push code now, fix it later. I'm learning in the industry that, if you do this, your technical debt could be too high.

Gaming Addiction and "Pro" Players
Professional gamers in the SC2 ring are often paid salaries and given prize money to continue playing competitively. Some don't view that as an addiction, but more of a job. I don't see how progaming and game addition relate to one another. One can lead to a healthy social life, habits, and prosperity; the other...won't, necessarily.

Why did Andrew Leave, Again?
It's been demonstrated that making more than $75K doesn't increase one's happiness, so him making a lot of money is probably a moot point. He wanted to focus on his side project, rather than be weighed down by the mammoth project that is 'Scape, which is understandable. While he's a captain of the ship, yes. But any captain is allowed to change ships (or become a farmer or whatever). Yet a captain can never leave the ship unless he knows it is in save lands, it is actually a crime if a captain leaves the ship before the others. (As seen by the ferry earlier this year in italy, where the captain left the sinking ship as first and is now in jail for leaving instead of helping). I'm also not saying that andrew should not leave RS: be my guest and leave.. But saying he deserves respect for that, and would be stupid not to leave is something I disagree with. Things that earn respect are people who devote their life for a company. Keeping a company the "family" feeling of a small company yet very influental in the world. (for example how the philips family made philips one of the largest companies between 1900 & 1980, after that it went downhill as investors came into the picture & fritz philips had to retire for old age). Software engineers are just plain wired differently than anyone else on the planet. For example: http://xkcd.com/242/ Your logic sounds sound in one sense, but is completely invalid in the dynamic world of software development. People that don't observe trends in the marketplace, and attempt to adapt to those trends, are as good as doomed. Software developers that don't experiment in different fields are doomed to both irrelevance in modern times, as well as boredom. People in general that don't try to capitalize on their own idea are only limiting themselves, and leaving themselves dissatisfied. The guy wanted to do something different, and that's definitely commendable. I can't really recall at any point in time when he handled the front-facing side of the business anyway, nor do I recall him stating that he liked doing that if he did, so accusing him of abandoning ship is pretty harsh.

"Insight Venture Partners" filtered on the RSOF
It becomes a point of major concern when Jagex can't seem to make anything sustainable other than RuneScape, and even then they're slowly sucking what morals it had right out. This is a really bad straw man. What does your statement have to do with mine, other than to try to make some false link between IVP and, say, Jagex deciding to axe Stellar Dawn? Seriously. I want to know. I'll start from the top. First, you mention complaining about one of Jagex's private investors. Complaining, or voicing negative feedback in general, has always been an awkward thing for Jagex to react to - sometimes they take it in stride, sometimes they ignore it, sometimes they try to squash it outright. It doesn't stop players from voicing their opinion about the state of any one of their products. As to the flames directed towards IVP in particular - they've done similar things with MapleStory. This wasn't something that Jagex stood for to begin with, but now it seems like they've done a complete 180 on their perceived morals. Second, whether or not the game would go under because the investors didn't step in is probably up for debate. I mean sure, Jagex's financial outlook for last fiscal year was none too pretty, but would that have meant that they go under? [Warning: opinion] Had they focused on adding content that both the players wanted, and increased the appeal of their game, then that wouldn't have been a major concern. The bot nuke was a step in the right direction (preceded by a few updates that set them back 30 steps). Had they rolled this beta out a bit sooner, that would've helped. Adding more engaging quests, improving existing skills, reworking some aspect of the game that gets a lot of whine - all of this would have helped assuage any fears of Jagex needing cash. Adding content like SoF and Solomon's Store doesn't expand the game, it's just leeching off of it. It may be a sign that the game is in dire financial straights, but going under is tough, considering that it still brings in at least a healthy $2M/month.[/Warning] Third, it's not that big of a deal, but it leads to the Streisand Effect. As stated earlier, one of Jagex's major shortcomings is reacting to negative criticism about some aspect of themselves - be this daily operations, updates, statements made by JMods, reactions given by JMods, and so forth. Censoring that name only intensifies discussion about the investors, and it gets less flattering by the second. Lastly, the situation should be of concern to any RS player. RuneScape is the only apparent way Jagex is making sustainable income. Developers do not like a bounced paycheck. Spending tens of millions on projects that don't break even (at minimum) is a big problem. Then you have the situation where microtransaction-like features are bolted into the one product that's still doing alright, which for many players, is why they chose that product in the first place. This causes those players to leave. It's not a good spot for the player that's enjoyed this game throughout their childhood, or the software developers that have to pay their car note/insurance/rent/utilities/food/buy new clothing/buy new phone/miscellaneous.

Why did Andrew Leave, Again?
Andrew Gower left RuneScape a while back. This isn't new news by any means, but a new article that was published highlights some of the things he's doing, and touches on some of the reasons that he departed. http://www.develop-o...pe-Andrew-Gower For the most part, the reasons fall in line with why any normal developer would leave a company - even one they started - they wanted to do something new, but felt either distracted or inhibited by the major project at hand. From a developer's standpoint, I can see where he's coming from. If one has an idea, but one is back by something that's majorly time consuming (like RuneScape), it's better for both parties to separate - the developer, so they can focus more on what they want to do, and the company, so they can focus more on their major thrust. Hopefully, two things come of this: He becomes successful with his project, releasing it to indies and studios alike, and offering a competitive platform for people to develop games, and All talk of him abandoning Jagex because he couldn't stand their direction is squashed. He doesn't talk about Jagex directly, though, which is interesting in its own right.

Sizzling Summer Blow Out!
Where is everyone getting this $45 thing from? that's the price jagex quoted in news feed Seems odd seeing as Jagex are English based to use $ over £ in there examples.. The vast majority of their customers are from the United States, and converting from USD to any other denomination is pretty commonplace.
