(HJT Inc.) Comp Restarts after Shutdown, but not Hibernate?
Alright, tomorrow after bowling I'm going to get Avast or Avira (dunno which yet), and Comodo, and I'll concede and use Spybot just because I want to be absolutely sure I'm safe. I hope I don't have to go rootkit hunting this weekend... I don't get why someone would want to hack my myspace anyways. I have all of 6 people on there (told you I don't use it often). Guess I have to start writing new passwords now...be a good Java program to do, for some practice... And DVD, do you recommend Zone Alarm over Comodo? (Free vs Free, not paid versions, at least not for a few months).

(HJT Inc.) Comp Restarts after Shutdown, but not Hibernate?
Alright, I just went to check myspace (yeah, I hate it, but It's easier than calling people), and it said: "This account has been locked out for 15 minutes due to excessive failed login attempts. Please try again or Click Here to enter a different e-mail and password." But I've been playing WoW for the past 2 or so hours, and had logged out of MS earlier. Soo....I take it I'm being hacked now, or what?

(HJT Inc.) Comp Restarts after Shutdown, but not Hibernate?
I've been contemplating putting together my own anti suite, but I never had a really good guide for it, because every time I thought I would be good one way, some credible source says no, do it another way. I would love to have Zone Alarm and NOD32, but I don't have the money to pay for it. Hell, we're lucky we have internet at all here. I'm probably going to download Avast! and Comodo. I only have McAfee because it came with our internet subscription, and something is better than nothing, although it being so much of a resource hog is getting frustrating. Yes, I've tried Spybot, and every time I do, something gets messed up with my computer. Last time I had to spend a few hours trying to get my internet to work again, because it killed something. Damn program is frustrating, which is why I stay away. Y'all can preach about it all you want, I've had nothing but problems with it. Still not convinced someone is trying to hack me. Think its just Windows being Windows. While I'm here, anyone reading have a free program that can burn .iso images to a CD? I have a burner and CD, and a few different Linux distros I want to look at, but I can't remember what program I need to burn it.

4Chan
*must....resist....sexist....comment....*....*GAHH!!!* I don't go to /hc/, never did, the worst I go to is /gif/, and occasionally /h/ (my /h/ folder is only 22 images big though). The 18+ boards are a waste of time IMO. Same idea, different girl. Gets boring after awhile (plus, lack of movement is boring, hence the reason I used to hang around /gif/ a lot).
-
4Chan
Seriously, does anyone here actually visit the boards other than /b/? Most of the posts in this thread are about /b/, but what happened to the other ones? I for one spend a lot of time in /wg/, best board on there IMO...Or maybe I'm biased because I have about 700 pictures from there, all gotten in the past month. Sometimes I wonder into /w/ or /g/, and I'm not exactly a stranger to /gif/ or /s/, or even /h/ (although I haven't been to the last three in about 2 months or so, /h/ longer). /r9k/ is pretty good at times, definately not the festering cesspit that /b/ is, and probably always will be. But still, why does everyone have to continually bash 4chan, based mostly on /b/ or some other stupid board that they visited once. Yes, even my beloved /wg/ has bad posts, but I didn't stop checking because there was something bad on it one time (It's more of semi-daily ritual for me to check now, and grab more images to add to my collection). /rant (sorry, but I had to do it).

Well, I use a router for one. I also have McAfee firewall running on Stealth mode. The description for this is in the hide tag. [hide=Stealth description]Blocks all inbound Internet connections, except open ports, hiding your computer's presence on the Internet. The firewall alerts you when new programs attempt outbound Internet connections or receive inbound connection requests. Blocked and added programs appear on the Program Permissions pane.[/hide] I also have Windows Firewall active. As I stated in my last post, I haven't noticed anything suspicious, and nothing has come up in any of my scans (aside from the aforementioned programs, some of which were in quarentine for about a year...Yeah, I just started cleaning things up again). Everything seems normal, except for the shutdown problem. Nothing has been changed on my computer (no settings, new accounts, anything like that), no system or network slowdowns, nothing that would lead me to believe I'm on an infected system. The only oddity I can find is that I can't shutdown, and on occasion I can't hibernate (It comes up with a Windows API and lack of system resources or something like that, but it only happens after I've exited FF or WoW, something like that).

When was the last time you cried?
You son of your mother and father...You had to go and post a sad story that I could relate to, didn't you? The last time I cried was this weekend actually. Although it wasn't really my fault. My friend challenged me to a wrestling match, and he accidentally kneed (or maybe kicked, can't remember which) me in the eye..Kindof involuntarily cried.. Last time I actually cried, in sadness (I cry when I'm in a certain state of rage, which is generally a good time to run away, especially if I have any heavy objects nearby), was probably about 4 years ago when my uncle died, at his funeral. A combination of some really sad music, and everyone around me crying, including my dad who I've seen cry only once before, finally did me in. I don't ever seem to cry. Even when my great grandparents, who I was very close to, died, I didn't cry. Didn't even cry when I dislocated my kneecap, tore a ligament in my knee, and had to put the knee back into place and walk home (about a football field away, distance-wise).

Minor Annoyances
Very nice list I shall add to my own. Got a new one today: -People who try to mess with their friends and miss...Example: Today I was walking down the hall and there was a group of kids arguing and I guess one went to go mess with his friend and hit him. Well, he missed, and hit me instead (may have been deliberate, since I knew some of the kids, and weren't exactly friends with them...far from it). I had no choice but to throw him into the wall and keep walking. -Meaningless school rules. My friend got yelled at for wearing his sunglasses, outside, walking from the high school to the tech center...What the hell is he doing wrong wearing sunglasses? Protecting his eyes? Shame on him.

Uhh...damn...I delete things after they are quarentined usually. And FF is set to delete history after closing, so I really cant help you there... I don't know if anyone can get on my computer though. I've got both McAfee firewall and Windows Firewall set at their highest settings under complete lockdown, and I deleted all program permissions, and redid them all one by one, so nothing is on the list that shouldn't be. Also haven't noted any weird processes, or anything taking up space that shouldn't be (I use Process Explorer [procexp] to check periodically). Also haven't had any odd network activity, no lag or anything. If it helps, a few were 'mp3 files' that I got through limewire (but they were scanned before playing so nothing could have happened there, or I don't think they could have). A few were found in a jre 1.5 or something like that. They were trojans, I think some ended with .a. A lot seem to have been IRC things, where it would try to connect to a remote serve and wait for commands, stuff like that, or that's what the threat center said. I looked to see if anything sounded familiar, and I have these results (don't quote me on that these are the exact ones, but they seem likely): http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_125294.htm http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_144503.htm <--- This one was definately one of the ones I removed. I'm sorry I couldn't provide you with more information, but I try to keep this computer clean if possible, because my other computer got hit with a few bad pieces of malware (win antivirus 2007 or 2008, think it was '08), and is now a fully functional footrest and doorstop...So, I'm trying to keep threats, even quarentined ones, on the computer for the shortest amount of time possible (and for most, that time is about 0 seconds).

(HJT Inc.) Comp Restarts after Shutdown, but not Hibernate?
Oh, I thought I added the OS: I'm using XP Professional SP2 (just downloaded the SP3 update, but haven't installed it yet, will do it later). I did check the bios yesterday just to see if there was anything in there, but I didn't find anything odd. Could it possibly be the RAM upgrade I did about a month ago? The only reason I noticed the problem was because I used to use hibernate all the time, but I wanted to go with full shutdowns. There is no abnormalities when I shut down the computer. ie no flashing power light, no odd noise, nothing out of the ordinary. I've even tried to shut down all processes one by one except those vital to keeping the system up, and still the shutdown caused a restart... The only thing I can think of is I've deleted some viruses on the computer (found and quarantined through McAfee), that were like backdoor trojans. Could it be someone is trying to keep my computer on so they can control it? I've done some googling, and I couldn't find anything about any of this, so I came here.

(HJT Inc.) Comp Restarts after Shutdown, but not Hibernate?
Yeah, as the title says, I'm having some shutdown problems. When I go to turn off my laptop for the night, I go to hit shutdown. Everything closes down normally, doesn't seem to take a longer amount of time than it has in the past. However, after a shutdown, the computer will restart itself anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes after the shutdown. To keep it off, I have to unplug the power supply, and remove the battery, and then put both back in the next day to use it. Yesterday, I decided to do a few tests. I scanned with Ad-Aware, found some tracking cookies and one bookmark that was cited as an attempted browser hijacking. I promptly deleted both, and scanned my computer with my antivirus, McAfee. McAfee found nothing. Then, last night, I decided to try something different after my shutdown didn't work again (which means whatever was found wasn't to blame). I click on my hibernate icon (I have a shortcut on my desktop that does hibernate), and the computer went through and hibernated just fine. Thing is, this time it didn't restart. So, tl;dr My laptop restarts soon after a successful shutdown, but does not restart after hibernate..Any help?

Minor Annoyances
Really, don't know how to say it better. -People who listen to bad music really loud, so you have to hear it too. Only doesn't bother me when I have my mp3 player with me. -People who move really slowly on the stairs, the grounds, in the halls, anywhere really. I've had to push my way through crowds, and/or physically move people from my path in order to get to class on time (and I usually don't talk to people between classes, since my classrooms are so far from each other). ....Actually got called into the dean's office Monday or Tuesday, don't really remember, for doing it. Didn't get in trouble, because the dean I was talking to was cool, and I knew him better than the others. -Teammates who bowl bad and blame it on the lanes, or their ball. Seriously, you hold the ball, you swing your arm that's holding the ball, and you release the ball. It's your own damn fault if you're best frame was a 9/... -People who insist they need new equipment, like new shoes or a new ball (or in lacrosse, new everything, from pads to sticks, to the mesh on the head of the stick), when they don't need it at all. I've gone 3 seasons or more with the same primary ball, and my average continues to rise. It's not the equipment, it's the technique. Perfect the technique, then you can go and spend 300 bucks on what you need to advance to higher levels. -Guys who wear clothes way too big for them, so you see their boxers, or they steal the last class t-shirt in your size, so you have to wait for new orders -.- -People who stress over stupid things, like a 10 point quiz when you have a 93% average in the class already... -When a movie stops in the middle of a good scene, or an action scene, by power outage, film corruption, manual stop, etc. So frustrating, especially in school where you have to wait almost 24 hours to see the rest of the scene. -Mods on cars that are useless, like cutting off the muffler so it "sounds better", or lift kits. I've seen maybe a dozen trucks with lift kits that actually look good, and are functional. Just saw a VW bug with a turbo in it. What a waste of money, putting a turbo on a Beetle.. -The [wagon]es who seem almost glad to fail, like most of my 2nd hour. I think around 90% of the class has failed at least one class, and at least 3 people failed more than half their classes last year. They couldn't even pay attention to a movie with simple worksheet, where the questions asked in the worksheet were easily found in the movie and answered. The teacher had to stop so many times just to give the idiots the answers. Man, if he wasn't so nice, I think 4 people in the whole class would actually pass. -Not using directional signals. I don't know why, but this drives me crazy when my mom or whoever doesn't use the turn signals to switch lanes (which is illegal as well) or something similar. -People who sign up for classes for no apparent reason. I signed up for a programming class, and i was the only one who actually had prior coding experience, or even wanted to write programs as a career. I'm the only person to have done a game outside of school in my Vo-Tech class too...Thought it might be like a pre-req, but nope, damn slow school system. -The phrase "the other day." That could be from yesterday to the beginning of time. Why can't you say "sometime in the beginning of the week" or "I can't quite remember what day it was, I think around thursday..." etc..it's just so annoying trying to figure out what day it could be. There's a lot more, but I fear I've bored you too much already. Seeing all the things I listed as annoying kind of shines a light on why I have such bad anger issues.

Arrr it be International Speak like a Pirate Day!
Our school mascot is the Pirate, so we were celebrating it all day lol. 200 kids that got pirate pride (everything we do is pirate related, pirate tv, pirate pride, announcements start with "Good morning Pirates"...lol) tickets for being good students got to go on a scavenger hunt. Glad I didn't get picked, would have been a stupid reason to skip Vo-Tech...Srsly, scavenger hunt or design and play video games?.. I mean...Garr! Avast ye scurvy dogs! Thar be gold in them there hills!..:twss:

Large amount of multiple internet browser windows opening.
Bette yet, have her sign up for an account and explain the problem to us? Seems like it would be more helpful, as we would get answers and results straight from the source. I'll agree with the HJT, SpyBot S&D, and Ad-Aware scans. Other than that, like everyone else said, not much we can do without some specifics.

Microsoft Word
Its the only thing I could find that even came close to what you wanted. Unless you're a good hacker, I say you're SOL on this one. Just save it in both folders (create a shortcut in one to the other, so it's faster), only takes a few seconds to do a save. Unless someone else knows something I and the first 40 results of Google don't.

Cropping pictures in Paint
I'll +1 the link... But "hacking photoshop to 'get' it" is not only highly illegal, its pretty much 100% impossible to do cleanly (meaning without being traced and/or getting a virus/rootkit/trojan/other malware). Unless you're just so incredibly good at guessing numbers you manage to get a matching authentication key and the other code on the first few tries...

Questionable Items in Your Possession
No wai, me too!!! :twss: HAHAHA!!!! Still laughing a bit at this...dunno why.. lol some more.... Alrighty then..I suppose the weirdest things I have would be an unfinished spud gun (missing the igniter, and somehow the pvc sealer...dunno where that got off too), fireworks, a makeshift bomb from half of said fireworks (not really a bomb...usually just catches on fire and burns for awhile, although the last one did explode, thanks to some...external help). I have an electromagnetic fishing pole (wooden broomstick with some stretchy cord thing, fishing reel/line, and an electromagnet at the end...was for an old science experiement/competition). Power cords to things I don't own anymore, and don't know what they go to. My assortment of knives and swords hangs around my room, along with my paintball gun which no longer works. I have lighters and matches stashed in various parts of my room. The first model rocket I ever made and launched by myself (well, my dad was there to help oversee the launch, but I did everything myself, including the recovery). Also have the shrapnel from my first exploded rocket (or most of it, that was a fun day). Also found some burned things that I can't identify (seems like I did my job right though =P). Probably a bunch more stuff, but I didn't really look, just opened all my drawers and glanced in.

Microsoft Word
Hold the shift key before clicking on file. Then click File, then Save All (new option thanks to the shift menu). Don't know if it works, but I found it on 2 seperate sites. I rather doubt that it will work, but if it does, let me/us (here on T&C) know. Only thing I could find that may work.

iPods and Linux
Alright, thank you Makoto_the_Phoenix for the helpful answers. I'll just go ahead and make the CD for my own use. I'll work on getting a flash drive dedicated to Linux at another time (I hear Puppy Linux is made to be used on a flash drive, so I got a distro of that. May give it a try this weekend). Now this server thing has gotten me all confused. I'll make sure to call Comcast (my ISP) and see what they say about it. I don't think we've done anything to make them mad at us (for lack of a better phrase), but we did just cancel having the set-top box (which has all the movies and good channels), but that's about it.. Don't want to terminate the contract, as if my father and I didn't have enough problems with each other... I don't get what I need to set up or how to do it though. Like, I don't know what Apache is, and I've never worked withH PHP or MySQL (though I want to learn MySQL...I understand it's like MS Access?). Also never used Python or Perl...Probably should get on that...Does not knowing any of these matter a lot? Should I go out and buy a few books on the different ones (or ask my tech teacher to borrow his, since he also teaches Web Design)? sloter, what do you mean change the listening port? That mean like the place where the requests for access to the page would come in? Yeah, I just got in to web design, and programming seriously [meaning for a career], so please don't just throw things at me without a little explanation, or maybe some linkage. Like, I just went under Wikipedia to look up Apache, and it seems like that would remove the point for Ubuntu Server? Maybe someone could help me over PM or a chat program (I think I still have an active AIM and MSN Messenger account)? Or even a decent web site would help.

I got offered a pretty amazing job, i'm lost though.
I would say go for it. "Test the waters" or whatever, and see if you like it. If you do find that you enjoy the work, then you can stick with it, and skip going to college since you already have a solidified position. Should you do the job for awhile and find out that you don't like it, then you've only wasted maybe a year (probably, since I don't think you could go for a few weeks, find you hate it, and enter college immediately)..Since you've been working for pretty good wages, you'll hopefully have a fair bit of money saved up (2 nights a week for a year, at 450 bucks, is nearly 50 grand), so the financial burden that colleges place on you wont be as large. Plus, you may discover something else on the road that you want to do, and you'll have travelled to many places, so you may be able to check out a few colleges on the way, and see all different places while you do it. Seems like a really good opportunity to me. I would definitely take the offer if just fo a little while.

iPods and Linux
Alright, so no Java (damn), but I'm not sure about this whole linux thing. First, the iPodLinux does not support my 5G ipod, so I don't think I want to risk installing it, as my iPod also serves as a place for me to backup files, and an external hard drive. Second, I thought that the ipodlinux distro let you use linux and some linux apps on your ipod...well, this isn't possible with me, since i can't see my screen (the crack is huge, and warranty expired a long time ago, and I'm not spending 200 bucks on the repair, or 80 bucks for the kit to do a self-repair). I suppose what I should have said is I want to use the iPod as more of a portable OS or something, so I could just plug it in, have Ubuntu and some apps ready, etc, so I could use Linux at school (where installing Linux on the computers would be pretty much impossible)....I don't know how to explain it, maybe someone knows what I'm talking about... Alright, I downloaded a version of Ubuntu on my iPod (since I got it at school and didnt have a disc handy). How do I get it on there? Change the boot order to boot from the iPod, or do I absolutely need to find some software to burn the .iso on a disc, and boot from that? Alright, I'll grab a copy after I get done with cleaning out the system. But can I also use it to host web pages? Like, I'm just practicing web design, but I'd like to host a few pages so I can show off my handiwork, and let my friends access the pages. Probably put some info on my game projects, some bowling records, info on my WoW and RS characters, etc. Simple stuff. Maybe make a seperate site for employers containing a minor version of a resume. I dont know if you can help me with the above, may not even be possible (like, how would I do the domain registation and everything)...Just a few thoughts that popped into my head during the day.. Java projects? Do share. I'm reading a Beginner's Java book right now. Would love to see some higher-level, more advanced applications... Speaking of Java, any idea on what I could use to do more visual things? Like, I'm familiar with Visual Basic .NET and stuff like that, but I would love to add some graphics and things to it, instead of just something that spits out the results of an equation, or like batch files where you can maybe press a key to open a web page (after all, if I wanted to do batch files, i would have never gotten the book).. Like, I had an old app I made in VB that I would put in a few things, like my 3 games, previous average or series, number of games bowled and what average I wanted, and would spit out the current number of games, new average, and what games/series I would need for my wanted average...Any idea how to do this? It was much easier in VB because I could see all the controls and debugging was really easy...Not sure if there's a better thing for writing and compiling code than what you get from Sun..

iPods and Linux
Alright, I've been using my 30GB 5th Generation iPod as an external hard drive (and a backup of some important laptop files) for about a month now. Note that the iPod has a broken screen, so I can't exactly use it for videos or finding songs anymore. Since school has started, and I take a game design class at the vo-tech center, I've been using it more and more in class to shuttle graphics, unfinished games, etc, back and forth between schools. I was wondering if there was any way to install programs on my iPod, and how would i go about doing it? Like, would they have to be Mac compatible? Specifically tailored for iPod? I looked online a bit, but I couldn't really find anything that said what the programs have to be compatable with (since some software is mac-only, or windows-only). I'm rather interested in putting on Visual Basic, a Java compiler, and Notepad++ or HTML-Kit. Maybe a few other programs (Possibly Firefox with all my add-ons on it, for when I have to do research). Also, can I install Linux on the iPod, so when I plug it in at school, I can use Linux itself, or Linux programs at school? I know there is an iPodLinux, but it does not support the 5G model (and I'm not risking the install). I do have a few more questions about Linux too. I've read so much about it in my magazines (PC World and PC Magazine mostly), and online, I figured I should give it a try. I have an old desktop that's been infected with viruses a few times (one which I'm not entirely sure i've cleaned out) on one HD, and on the other, a copy of windows that doesn't boot due to a failed attempt at installing windows updates. First, I want to get all my files off the desktop, so what would I need to do that? Like, what would be the easiest distro to boot off of so I can copy over my files (probably to the aforementioned iPod) to this computer? I've never used Linux before, so something that's a bit simple would be nice...Although I am a programmer (well, VB and soon Java), so I'm not exactly afraid of the Command Prompt and coding. Also, I've been debating on turning the computer (after I shrink the windows partition and get all the unneeded programs off of it, to save disk space, since I can't wipe it, only have an OEM copy of windows) into either a NAS device (since my laptop only has 60gb of storage (with about 12 free atm), and I'll probably have 50 to play with after I get done with the desktop), or maybe a web server..I would like a bit more information on what I would need to do both (sticking with Linux here again, for both cases). Is it possible to do both? Have a small partition for my website, and keep the rest for storage? If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'll answer them after sleep/school (wanted to post this before bed to hopefully get some answers, 15.5 hours should be enough time, right?). And I'm sorry for any typos involving the letter "r", as my r key is broken (or it takes multiple attempts and/or a really hard hit to get the character).

*scratches head*.. Things to do by next year: Learn PHP....lol What would the code look like for that lol? And does it have to be PHP, or could it be just html/css (or maybe Java Script?).
