I was thinking have it appear on one of the sides (and maybe move all of the content that's currently there to the other side slightly), although the bubble thing could work too.

I'm all for no scanlines, IMO they're distracting (in a bad way) and just don't look very good. Same as Kaphias, too. I definitely agree with the dock idea though, would work very well. Or you could just make the slightly larger version of the image as well as some more information appear when you hover your mouse over one of the thumbnails, seems a bit more user friendly and allows for some cool animations to be added. :P

Inspired by Harry's work on PR? ;) I'm not too sure if the rainbow colour scheme style works that well on this one. It does look good overall and I really like the effects (nice and clean, they help establish some flow), but like gbpackers said the render just doesn't really seem to fit. Good job on the new style, though.
