Why is my computer so slow?
Maybe your computer is the same but your brain has speeded up?

Question for those familiar with NOD32, SpybotS&D,ZA(free)
Not from my experience, avast for me is the biz, and you can totally tailor what it scans too, such as Web, Email etc....

Microsoft Office Problem
This happens a lot with Office 2000, it's possibly the worst version of office ever. It even asks you for the discs to un-install the damn thing. I would suggest inserting your office cd and re-installing all products.

is vista really this bad...
Oddly enough you're right, but in a way so am I, I just found out miniwin is basically a stripped down kernel. we already have it in Vista :|

Question for those familiar with NOD32, SpybotS&D,ZA(free)
My personal preference for security on a system would be the following combination of software: Avast - Much better than AVG and less of a resource hog. Ad-Aware 2007 - Superb antispyware. Windows Defender - It's free and comes with Vista anyway! Comodo 3.0 Pro - An award winning firewall that beats Zone Alarm into the dust. All are free and that combination I have found to be superb!

is vista really this bad...
That's nothing to do with Vista, that's IE7, and IE7 runs on XP too. Firefox and IE are just browsers and not OSs. Well not 100% true, Vista was supposed to ship with the WinFS file system which boasts a relational database making file searching and indexing much faster. However, due to reasons mentioned below, vista had to be delayed and they stuck with good old solid NTFS. With Windows 7 you will still be able to use NTFS of FAT32 if you wish, but doing so would be silly as you will loose a lot of the advantages that comes with WinFS. It's a bit like using FAT32 on NT, 2K, XP, or Vista. Compared to NTFS, FAT32 is slower and lacks any form of security, you would be mental to use FAT32 on your Windows based HDDs these days. Another thing about Windows 7 is that finally the kernel will be built from the ground up using MiniWin technology. Making the kernels codebase much smaller and a lot faster. I personally can't wait as I have been fed up of Windows 2nd hand code lurking around. One point on Vista being delayed was oddly enough to do with XP. During the development of Vista some bunch of numpties found a load of security holes in Windows XP and released a mass of viruses into the wild. This was known as "The Summer of Worms". MS then halted development of Vista to concentrate on fixing the security issues in XP, thus Vista was put on a temp hold which led to WinFS not being used. I think it was pretty amazing they got Vista released when they did!

Rs on ps3?
you can even get it working on a PS2 by loading the PS2 Linux Ditro and JRE. But again that's painfully slowwwwww. But, I bet your life you will be able to run Runescape HD on the Pandora when that comes out.

Looking for Flash game programers for GP2X Wiz
Well here's an update. My pre production Wiz turned up today all the way from Korea. And it's a nice handheld indeed! Smaller than what I imagined but the screen is amazing :)

Windows Vista Firewalls - What's good?
I agree, Comodo is an awesome firewall. Award winning too!

Question about dual cores and dual OS's on 1 pc
There's something else to consider: Some motherboards support something called hardware virtualization, which means for emulators that support it such as VirtualPC 2007 will grab the 2nd core for itself. You will then be running the virtual machine almost completely on a 2nd core making it much more like running a 2nd computer within your main PC.

Danger Will Robinson! (The do's and dont's in computing)
An anti-static wristband will help, so long as you have something to discharge to(a part of your case will work nicely) I just will make a note of not tampering with your hard drive. If the top pops off, it's ruined, because the distance between the contacts and the "plates" on the hard drive is smaller than the size of a strand of hair. Pushing it wont help. Correct, the distance is less than 5 microns so even a spec of dust could wreck the heads or platter surface. Rule of thumb: NEVER EVER open a hard drive up! The industry have special dust free rooms for doing this for a very good reason.

Danger Will Robinson! (The do's and dont's in computing)
Here's what will really happen: A single USB will supply a finite amount of juice, and that's it. It will not overload the system and if the device you plugged in requires more than a single port can supply then it will simply not have enough power to function. Please note the OS will not know this as it has no way of knowing how much energy is required to power the device effectively. This is is why a lot of 2.5" USB hard drives have dual USB plugs, so you have the added ampage from a 2nd port!

PSU Power Supply Units If the power supply on your system dies, never attempt to open it up and poke around in a futile attempt to get the poorly deceased thing working again. Power supplies not only are the point where you can come into contact with live mains, but most PSUs are switch mode power units and could seriously harm you with the high frequency switching circuitry. Even after the PSU is off and unplugged from the mains, it still has capacitors that are could be charged, so don't go sticking your finger in there and wiggling it around hoping to see a spark of life. Power supplies have no user serviceable parts inside and should never be opened. Some PSUs have a fuse that can be changed without the need to open the unit, this should be perfectly safe to do. I have actually seen someone having a shock from a PSU inside a television, he was thrown back and landed in a glass cabinet behind him. That was one of the scariest things I had seen.

Danger Will Robinson! (The do's and dont's in computing)
Air Vents Never ever under any circumstances block the air vents on your PC, Console, Laptop or any electrical equipment. They are there for a specific reason, and that's to vent hot air out of the system. Blocking these vents will cause the temperature inside the unit to rise, at the very minimum it could cause component failure, which is the very reason the vents are there in the first place. The worst case scenario could be a fire, resulting in possible death, loss of property and I am guessing your system won't work after that. Never ever listen to anyone who offers "Blocking the vents" or "Wrapping your device up in a towel" to heat it up thus resolving dry joints as a solution to a hardware failure. You will likely do even more damage and run the risk of a fire. What you should be doing is regularly vacuuming out dust from your system, usually just hoovering out the vents once a month is good enough. This will likely prolong the life of your system and may even make it quieter and run cooler!

Danger Will Robinson! (The do's and dont's in computing)
Danger Will Robinson The do's and dont's in computing! Ever wondered what would happen if you stuck your finger into an open power supply? Then wonder no more as this thread is all about safety when messing about with your hardware. Here we hope to bring to light the point of safety in the subject matter that is, computing! So little is thought about when modding, dismantling and messing around with your systems that we thought it required a sticky in an attempt to save not only your own life, but the life of your precious hardware too! Please don't use this thread to ask questions (open a new thread to do that), it's intended as an information resource only. If you have your own safety tips, then by all means feel free to post them here, but do check that it hasn't already been covered in previous posts. Also, may I add that if you do not know 100% that your tip is reliable, then don't post it. False information may ruin someone's computer, especially if it's related to hardware. ~Pryomancer Take care, Clare.

Computer/tv corner picture idea - Tell me what you think!
I always find seeing other peoples setups interesting, but I'm not sure about making it a sticky though. If you're going make it a sticky, then you should lay down some topic ground rules in your opening post, otherwise it will become a free for all and then mutate into just another topic that doesn't warrant it being stickied.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
it's also possible that her parents have installed surveillance software that even captures screen activity every 30 seconds or so and sends it to a website. I came across something like that last year when this girls boyfriend was checking up on her even though they had split up.

haha, so my 360 red ringed... but theres more obviously
So you wrapped a 360 up in a towel, and got it hot enough internally to remake a connection on a dry joint? What are you nuts? not only will that damage other components but it's a fire hazard. Jeez whoever came up with that idea should be shot, then hung drawn and quartered and then made to explain to me what an idiot they are. Don't you ever go doing something that stupid again. Take it from me, I am a professional technician, don't EVER do that again. And the site you got that info from, I would seriously think twice before taking any advice from there again.

Looking for Flash game programers for GP2X Wiz
This isn't a contest, the manufacturers are looking for games to supply with the Wiz and all people who's games they like enough and are used will get a free Wiz as a thank you gesture. Addition: for those who think this is too good to be true, I just want to give some info or incentive.: GPH feel that if they give you a gift of a free console as a thank you for letting them use your game, then it may spure you on to develop more software for it thus keeping this neat little open source console alive. Also, you will still have all rights to your own game, you're just giving them permission to include it on the internal nand. It makes sense that if you have a game that you're already giving away free, or even a brand new game nobody has seen before which is laying around doing nothing, then why not get something in return for it? You never know, if you're good enough they may even ask you to dev more stuff. Who knows where this may lead! Don't forget, even though there will be many commercial software available, this console is mainly aimed at the open source market. Many games that look really noddy on the surface are really fun to play, take the Wii for instance, GFX is no where as powerful as an XBOX360 or PS3, but it's incredibly fun to play. The Wiz is also more powerful than a PSP. If you're a clever coder, you might even get noticed and make a career out of it. It's what happened in the days of the Amiga, some of them uber demos people wrote got them noticed :) All in all, it may just be a bit of fun and you may get a free console with your game on it, how cool would that be to show off to your friends! Myself, I'm beaming as Myriad is already on it:)

Looking for Flash game programers for GP2X Wiz
That would be fab, I am sure they will be incredibly happy! I will probably talk to their contents sourcing manager tomorrow morning (They are 8 hours ahead of us, I think). Are you able to show us any screen shots as tasters? It would be great if you could. PM me if you like :)

Problem with .ISOs
Or buy an external USB one, you can plug that into anything then. Madam Clare, you must have not read my post and/or checked the link that I posted. You have only repeated my suggestion. ;) ~D. V. Devnull No I didn't, er, it was an echo! :?

How to make a game playable without a CD (still need help)
Viruses checkers don't look for modified executable files, main system files maybe, but no way could they know what an original or modified game file looks like. Virus checkers work by searching for known viral code within the files, not the fact that they have been modified. If my virus checker says there's a virus there, I would tend to believe it! Unless I know 100% that it is incorrect.

How to make a game playable without a CD (still need help)
Be very very careful with no cd patches, make sure you virus and spyware scan the files before using them. A LOT of these files tend to be infected.
