  1. When I was learning Actionscript I drew partially on my previous experience with PHP, Fenix, C and Javascript. When I say partially, it was also a bad thing as Actionscript I found to be awkward, but after you get used to the idea of it all revolving around time lines, it's really quite fun!
  2. it's a shame both the Wiz and the Pandora won't be out until after Christmas, you would have loved either one of them. Both are totally open source, and you can easily code for them in C++, Fenix and Flash etc. The Pandora you will be able to code ON it due to its full QWERTY keyboard and is the most powerful handheld device in the world so far.
  3. Playing Quake 4 and Doom 3 on Vista is not s smooth as on XP, the frame rate was noticeably slower on Vista. This is why I keep XP boot for games.
  4. Good luck, if it all works can we see pics of the finished project?
  5. Yes usually IC sockets are the right size for veroboards, I would also get a track cutting tool too as it's much easier than cutting the tracks with a knife etc. I would also heed Deathmath's post and map it all out way before you start soldering anything, you really need to make sure tracks are cut and any loops between tracks are mapped. If you don't do this you're gonna end up with a right mess. Also if you are not too happy with soldering I would practice a bit on soldering bits of wire into spare veroboard offcuts.
  6. Okay, then you could probably make this using vero boards :) You just need to map out the circuit!
  7. May I ask, have you ever used a soldering iron before?
  8. I love Christmas, it's that time of year that's sparkly, friendly, and gets all my friends together. There's soo much I love about this time of year. So, tell me what you love (or hate) about Christmas, after all it's only 5 weeks away!
  9. Also reload the Chipset drivers, sometimes the DMA manager gets screwed up which can cause all sorts of weird problems.
  10. What has probably happened is that dust has collected on the outlet, if it's extremely bad compressed air won't solve the problem as generally the dust builds up forming a little carpet which blocks the vent on the heat sink. Here's an idea of what the assembly looks like with the fan in place, obviously this is not 100% the same on all models but they are generally similar: And here's the view of the heat sink with the fan removed: I have outlined the section of the vent in red where the dust builds up. The only way to remove the carpet of dust would be to open the laptop and remove the dust yourself, but if you're not feeling compitent then I would get a professional to do this for you as you could quite easily damage your laptop if you're not experienced. With some laptops you may be lucky as they have a trap door underneath giving you access to the fan and heat sink, but some you may have to remove the keyboard or even dismantle it completely. As stated in earlier posts, you could try a vacuum cleaner or compressed air but from experience this will only clear out the dust if it's a small amount. If it's clogged up, it won't help much.
  11. Another option is to have 2 hard drives, load each OS onto them individually, and then change the boot order in the BIOS, this means you are not sucked into any boot loaders, and you can kill any OS at any time. This is what I do and it is a much safer option.
  12. Google is your friend: Transparency Tutorial :)
  13. Well my brain does MD5 natively :D
  14. I usually make up a stupid sentence and then take the 1st letters from each of the words turning S into 5, A into 4 etc. Here's an example: ah yes, the weather here is totally naff Take all the first letters you get: aytwhitn And after changing some of them to numerical you get: 4ytwh1tn And I think generating passwords out of a sentence that only you know is an excellent form of password creation!
  15. Try Infra Recorder
  16. DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER is a generic error and may not be related to the hard drive, it just means it could not find any bootstrap info. Okay things to check: 1. Unplug your Hard drive cables from both the motherboard and hard drive sides and plug it back in again. Sometimes you get bad contacts and doing this has the effect of cleaning them. This can also be known as "Re-seating". 2. Boot off your Linux Live disc again and if you can see your hard drive then it's unlikely to be a faulty drive. 3. Check your BIOS to make sure your hard drives are being seen in the correct order. 4. Check your boot order removing everything but the boot hard drive. 5. Some motherboards allow booting from USB devices and this overides the boot order, disable USB booting. 6. Remove any media such as USB pen drives, floppy disks and optical media from your PC. 7. Boot off your Windows install disc and perform a repair. I am wondering if your hardware is working fine, i.e. your Linux live disc is able to access your hard drive and view all files correctly, then have you got something nasty such as malware that's screwing with your Master Boot Record?
  17. It's probably because of the join type between your tables, access by default performs an inner join which returns ALL data connected between tables, you probably need to do an outer join between your tables. For more info on this take a look HERE. Alternatively, if you can upload your DB I can take a look and amend if you like?
  18. I tried Slax Linux today and I was VERY impresed, I ran it off a USB pendrive and it worked extremely well.
  19. What about DeLi Linux, that's extremely lightweight. I have an old 486 laptop laying around and DeLi Linux runs pretty well on that!
  20. or just create a file with: <?php phpinfo(); ?> in it and navigate your browser to it.
  21. There's also much more going on as the whole architecture of the machine is better, ignoring the CPU speed, the front side bus, RAM, drive access, DMA etc will be much faster on the new machine. All in all the newer laptop will kick your old ones [wagon] (so to speak).
  22. Can your webpage use PHP?
  23. Okay if the tip actually fitted then it's probably the correct one, but why you now have a dead laptop could be one of the following reasons: 1. The Polarity of the tip was set incorrectly - Most multi purpose PSUs have a polarity selector, why manufacturers could not a agree on a standard polarity really narks me off. Wrong polarity could mean your laptop would have continued working off batteries for a bit but as soon as the charging circuit died (Which is directly connected to the battery) your laptop would have done exactly what it did. 2. The voltage of the new PSU was set too high. Again this would have worked for a short space of time but you would overload the motherboard and quickly kill it. 3. The new PSU could not deliver the requested power - On the bottom of the laptop there is a rating in Amps, if that rating is higher than the Amp rating written on the PSU, then it's possible the laptop drew too much current and has actually killed the PSU and your laptop is actually fine. Where did the pop and smoke come from, was it from the laptop or the PSU? By the way, if the Amp rating on the PSU is higher than the Amp rating on the laptop, that is perfectly fine, in fact that is better, it just means the PSU will last longer as there will be less strain to deliver the requested current. I have bad news though, going by your description of what happened and if the smoke came from the laptop it sounds like you have fried the power/charging circuit and that's on the motherboard, you have killed it big style and replacing a motherboard in a laptop can cost anything from £200 to £600. In the trade this is known as uneconomical to repair.
  24. Hmm... I'll take your word for it since I've never had the chance to see this irregularity. Although I must wonder what would happen if a laptop with such a connector setup took a drastic fall. :-k ~D. V. "Sorry for the upset, and thanks for the heads-up." Devnull You know what they say about someone with a little bit of knowledge, they're dangerous :P
  25. You don't get it, you tried to show someone what an IDE connector looks like by showing them an ATX motherboard IDE connectors, If you look at a laptop you really won't be able to see that type of connector because: 1. The connector is the inverse gender of an IDE motherboard connector because generally the drive plugs directly into it without a cable. 2. Quite a few laptops have a little adapter on the HDD connector making it look completely different anyway. The only similarity is the fact the IDE 2.5" HDD connector has pins, but as stated some have an extra little adapter so you may not even see that, it's why I thought it was a safer bet to show a SATA drive and say if it ain't that, then it's IDE.
