Just a quick question
You could also do it if you have a webhost that supports PHP by pointing the URL to a PHP page which returns a random image.

The most appropriate way to do this?
Yep AJAX is the only easy way to do this without going into Flash or Java etc. Where are you getting the data from? Errdoth, love the Pilot :)

Network Drive Question
I agree, Devnull got is spot on. And considering hard drives are so cheap these days, why not just get a 2nd drive?

Getting Administrative Rights on Laptop
Remember Devnull also thinks cookies are dangerous it really surprises me he doesn't use ntfs. Actually, I'm sitting on a PC that uses NTFS for the C: drive, and I've had nothing but trouble with the NTFS-based system volume. And this is even though my ID is a Power User. (Yes, not an Admin, but geez... Microsoft blew it. Power Users should have the ability to traverse anywhere they need to, give or take an Admin's personal folder, and maybe one or two deep-seated system folders!) That's why I'm calling it ugly, because it is giving me that level of trouble. Sure, it should be secure, but it shouldn't lock out people that should have access to certain folders, which is something that having the upper deck of priveleges is supposed to allow. :| And as for cookies, they're not all bad. I recommend prompt so that a user knows what's going on their PC. Not to be an annoying [bleep], which is contrary to what sloter thinks. (OT: BTW, you'll notice I spell-checked him for what he did to my online last name...) ~D. V. Devnull This just goes to show that you have absolutely no idea what you're doing when it comes to NT permissions, you obviously DON'T know what's going on, on your PC, if you did then you wouldn't keep bashing into permission denies! Did you know that you can quite easily create a group and give that group the correct permissions on the folders you need to access. Then add yourself to that group. Or simply give Power Users the permissions, it's not rocket science. Here's some basic rules of thumb when it comes to NT permissions: 1. Unless otherwise set, a folder will get it's permissions from it's parent folder. Permissions are also called ACL (Access Control List). 2. Deny always overrules Allow. 3. If you're having problems with accessing folders/Files, check your effective permissions, being a member of more than one group can effect this, i.e, if you're a member of Admins and a member of Users, and Users have a deny for one folder, then you will also be denied even though you are a member of Admins which is allowed to access that folder. Don't forget: Deny always overrules allow, it's a safety factor. Checking effective permissions tallies up all your permissions and shows you plain and simple what you are actually allowed to do in a resource. 4. Copying/Moving Files may change permissions, here's the general ruile: a: When you Copy a file from one location to another, the file will inherit it's ACL from it's destination folder. b: When you move a file on the same NT Volume, the file retains it's ACL from its original location. c: Then you move a file from one NT volume to another, it acts like a copy and that file gets it's ACL from the destination folder. 5. When you log onto an NT system, you are issued with a key containing your ACL which this determines what resources you are allowed to access and the permissions. If you add yourself to a group or change group permissions, then you need to log off and back on again to get an updated key. NTFS is simple if you know the basics, this is one thing that separates a professional from those who tinker around and pretend to know what they are doing, and I know a lot of technicians who fall into the latter basket. Why do you think MS has MCDST, it's not just a noddy exam you pass and get a fancy certificate, you learn so much while doing the course. I am in the middle of updating myself and doing the Vista MCDST, and you betcha I'm learning stuff all the time! Anyway, to sum up: NTFS good! FAT32 bad!

Getting Administrative Rights on Laptop
Sounds like he's on a HOME version of either XP or Vista, and that means there's no user account option in the management console. Home variants manage account from within Control Panel only. As Sloter said try using the NET command as that might work, although I have never tried doing that on Home editions and there me be a restriction policy in place. You may have to take ownership of the folder and then give yourself full permissions. Or you could log on as "Administrator", if you're on a home edition of XP or running Vista you will have to boot up into safe mode first or a security policy disables the "Administrator" account when you're not in Safe mode. Note to peoples regarding Vista: Vista has an extra policy in place that means even if your account is a member of the Administrators group, you still don't have the same rights as the "Administrator" account, and by default the Administrator account is disabled unless you're in Safe mode, and that goes for non Home editions of Vista too! The ONLY account that is a true 100% Admin on Vista is the account named "Administrator". Devnull, NTFS isn't ugly, it's secure! And isn't security something you keep banging on about? If you're still using Fat32, then your file system is not secure as any program can write anything anywhere. Please don't slag NTFS off because you don't use it and obviously have no concept of NT permissions. Stick to facts not fiction.

Monitor Issue with KVM (Not centred)
It's more likely to do with video cards outputting different analogue signals. Even if you output 60Hz 1024x768 on various systems you will find they all give different results. This is why all of the newer monitors have an auto sync function. With old CRTs you would have to alter the screens dimensions individually. It's kewl you have found a compromise though :)

Your mobile devices?
Well there are two devices set to hit the market soon: 1. The Pandora This is set to be the most awesome community driven hand-held console ever. It's literally being built by a non commercial company to the specs laid down by enthusiasts on a forum. They asked the members what would they like in a hand-held system and modelled it on the responses. And the guys designing it are part of that community. Simply awesome! 2. The Wiz From Game Park Holdings we have this device, it will hit the shelves in November and is quite interesting to say the least. Not only does it have PDA style apps built in, it boasts an OLED screen which will be perfectly visible in direct sunlight. The good thing about both of these systems is it's like being back in the days of the Amiga, being open source systems there will be a wealth of fantastic free software written by the community. and both are Linux based too. The Pandora even runs a Linux desktop environment if you so wish. Both will have Fenix runtimes so all them apps and games written in Fenix will run already!

Google Chrome
Well it's been around for a few days now and we seem to have a lot of pro and anti users. But for a product that's brand new and is still Beta it's kinda kewl. I have found some problems already and reported them to Goggle, I hope you do the same as that's the point of a Beta; to release it into the wild and then have bug reports, if you use a Beta version of anything then you should understand this concept and report back accordingly. Spell checker doesn't seem to work correctly on vista, right clicking on a red highlighted word doesn't suggest any corrections on my PC, but does on my XP boot, Runescape has the same problem as IE on my PC (White screen of nothing on full screen), I would like the option to set home page for new tabs. I would love a drop down arrow to list recently visited websites on the address box instead of having to partially type it. I'm sure things like this will be addressed and added or at least as an option or someone will write an extension, who knows, I might even write some myself :) Addition: Home page button should be visible by default. Home page is something I use a lot, especially if you can't set what a new tab defaults to.

Street Racing
Let me just say it's things like this that really pisses me off. We have kids that do that round here and we call them "Boy Racers". They are noisy and dangerous. And it's a stupid thing to do.

Anyone got Google Chrome working with RS yet?
But RuneScape doesn't run with JavaScript. It runs with Java. There is a difference, I promise you. I've heard tale that one can get Java to run with the new 6.10 update (BETA), but I'd advise against it until that becomes stable. Wouldn't it just suck to be playing RS and then get disconnected at some critical juncture because of it...? I totally agree, I only run RS on FF2 at the moment as I found that is the most stable platform for the game. This is partly Jagaex's fault as they released the HD version when it still has major issues with the full screen mode :( Sorry guys, I love the game and what you do, but it's the truth: Full screen has big issues with different browsers, IE for one. I find I get the WHITE SCREEN OF NOTHING quite often, and I think I know why: When entering the full screen you fade from a white screen quickly to the game, but I think some browsers kinda get stuck on the total white bit. The game is actually running, I know this as if I CTRL+TAB I get a glimpse of the game as it returns to non full screen. Please sort that one out. You tryed Opera? For me it's the best and I tested Safari, FireFox and Internet Explorer 8 (ye 8 but also 7) Does it work with Runescape HD fullscreen?

Google Chrome
Bright Side: If a tab messes up, at least you can knock it out without calling "Windows Task Manager" and having to figure it out the hard way. :P ... I would call that an improvement over something like... *gulp* ...FireFox. :( ... Although, FireFox could use a memory breakdown feature like that. I wonder if such exists as an extension for FireFox. :-k Unluckily, Chrome doesn't have certain things yet. I'll be watching, but I'm doubtful. Especially with how they reacted to plugins in their little comic. :XD: ... At least FireFox took better to it. 8-) ~D. V. Devnull Dear Mr Devnull, We are all aware of how you're against change and how you poo poo ideas opposed to your final order. I for one have supported you on certain subjects and still do when you are correct and make sense, Unfortunately I feel at the moment you are being very negative about a potentially awesome development and may I say you are talking out of your arse sir.... If you ever talk about technology again please note that technology = progression, whether it be silk worms that spawned the invention of binary cards via the silk industry or the latest audio encoder bringing us smaller sized audio files. Do remember that progression brought us where we are today. Please don't stick to something because you know it, please embreace something new and run with the rest of us, learn and view the wonder of what is! I.E Stop being a nut and get with the program!

I tried Blender and it's kinda confusing, but I'm no way a pro at 3D modelling/texturing, I just dabble.

It actually runs on Chrome for me, my only problem is that full screen has the same problem as Internet Explorer does. When I try to go full screen I get a blank white screen. If I try it a few times it eventually works, after getting full screen it's fine until I need to play it again. Firefox doesn't have this problem.

If you want to have fun playing with 3D modelling and textures, give Art of Illusion a go. That image in my signature was created with AOI, and so was this:

I love of how you're saying all this as if it's fact. Sorry but I disagree, You're assuming they have the google toolbar installed. I have the toolbar installed and even I don't use that to search, for some reason I always find myself going to google's homepage to perform the search even thought I know it's essentially the same thing. To be honest I have built the google search into my homepage at home. On your point of people going "Why? I only want the Internet, and I've got it already". I will tell you; Because they all want something better, especially if it's faster. Why do you think there's soo much hassle about faster broadband. Anything that boasts a speed increase will get noticed, and Chrome definitely improves your surfing experience! Only time will tell, but I know what I will be using and what I will be recommending!

I wonder how long it will be before MS are forced to class IE as an optional extra, they got their hand slapped for having IE as a desktop icon option in the screen control panel, that's why it ain't there anymore. MS don't really have the right to monopolize the browser market, especially when it's full of holes :? I also think you don't give the public the credit they deserve, we meet all sorts here and I would say it's about 50/50 split between IE and Firefox. But I would say 99% of these people use Google regardless of what browser they currently use. And hey look on the Google homepage, Chrome is advertised! Now take a wild stab and guess what's gonna happen next :)

Clare is right, there's already a topic about this. :) This topic was reported, so I had a look at both topics. However this one is not so much a technical discussion, which is why I believe it has been allowed to stay by the Moderators who have already posted in this topic. I will leave it up to the OT Mods to decide if it should be locked or not. Laikrob, Tip.It Moderator I could be merged with the other topic?

Windows OS:which one is best
You may want to consider dual booting with Vista 64bit and a minimal XP for older game compatibility. But if you'er not going to be running those older games, stick with Vista as you're going to be seeing some of the newer games will be Vista only as DirectX 10 will not be supported on XP. If you're going to be dual booting, Install XP first then Vista 2nd. Rule of thumb for MS when installing software, older stuff first. One thing regarding 4Gb on Vista: A 32bit Operating system cannot physically address 4Gb of RAM as it doesn't have enough address registers, but with Vista SP1 MS produced a work around which sort of pages the RAM allowing you to use the full 4Gb. Please note this will not be as efficient as Vista 64Bit which will be able to address 4Gb natively. 64bit is faster anyway due to the fact it can shuffle data around faster than a 32bit OS can, obviously!

Google Chrome
Not a chance, this is here to stay. I'm running Chrome now and Oh My God, it's brilliant, very fast due to DNS pre-fetching, phishing and virus protection built in and so far has done a perfect job at rendering every site I have tried. It even rendered the menu I coded on >Checklist< correcly, I wrote that a looong time ago and uses very dirty javascript. Chrome also seems to value you browsing real estate by not cluttering it up with menu bars, excellent! I love the history screen too, excellent search function and the Javascript debugger is nice, and I love the way it manages your passwords :) All in all, excellent, so far I have no complaints except for Runescape HD not always going into full screen. But that was the same in IE and I think Jagex still have some bugs to sort out themselves. Oh and one more thing, Chrome's CSS isn't broken like it is with Firefox 3.

64 bit Vista would be better, it's also backward compatible with 32 bit applications. Unlike XP 64 bit which is a nightmare.
