  1. No that's pretty much what I was going to do :geek: . I was also going to show the method of reading and writing to files using ini format, this may be a bit more flexible. The functions I have for these (Which also enables to you manipulate the registry as well as ini files) work perfectly in VB6 but I haven't tested them in VB2008 yet, I need to do that when I get home tonight. Unfortunately My boyfriend and I are going shopping directly after work and then I promised to cook a meal afterwards, so it might be tomorrow morning ;) Joe, thanks for rising to the occasion :)
  2. LOL. And I can't wait to code for it :) Considering that it's 10 years old, it runs LAMP pretty good, I use it sometimes as a local development server. Kewl, did you see that the Wiz's OS is Linux too :)
  3. The quickest way to do this is to make a sort of text file array, each line contains all the data for each entry separated by something like |, here's an example: Bob|Combat 12|Poop|60 Fred|Combat 88|Whoop|70 You could read it all in a loop until EOF, loading the details into an Array, I don't have time to write you any code right now but if I get the chance, I will knock something up later on.
  4. Or buy an external USB one, you can plug that into anything then.
  5. Well one of the delights of the Wiz is it will have constant firmware updates and free game downloads on the site. When you get proficient and produce something you think may be good enough, drop us a line. You could always try coding in Fenix, there's a lot of resources and help for it :)
  6. LOL. And I can't wait to code for it :)

  8. Currently Flash 7 is the version that the Wiz supports. If you check out the Wiz website there's much info there, also on the GP32X Forums there is on going chat about it. If you PM me your email address I will send you more info, and if you like I can drop your address to the guys at GPH. Thanks for your interest and I am amazed you didn't want one of the Free Consoles.
  9. Yeah you can write games in C if you wish, they have an open SDL. Fenix is a bit of an odd beast, but I kinda like it. I have a dev environment setup so I can code for the Wiz already. And someone on the GP32X forums called Puck is currently updating the Wiz Fenix Runtime. Fenix is very good for those old style retro games, and has sprite, audio, collision detection etc already built in. Ideal for messing around with. My game Myriad was written in Fenix, and I am currently writing an updated version of Berzerk. Another Dev on the GP32X scene (quasist) is working on a 3D game engine as the Wiz has 3D capabilities built in. All in all it's pretty exciting, I hope my dev unit turns up soon :D
  10. Yeah it is, they are sending me one this week :). The design is going to change very slightly as they listened to the community on the GBAX forums and are changing the buttons on the right to the standard ABXY style, but I want one soon so I am getting the model in the picture :), can't wait to see my game on the OLED screen :).
  11. Hi Folks, I'm looking for people who are good with Flash and have written any home brew games of their own. If you have written your own game that is Flash 7 then I have a proposal for you. A Korean company called Game Park Holdings are soon to launch a home brew handheld console called the GP2X Wiz, they are looking for free home brew games that you can give them that will be used on the NAND and supplied with the console, if they like your game, then they will give you a free console as a token of friendship. I developed a game called Myriad in a language called Fenix, and I have given them permission to use that, in fact their graphics designers have even given me updated GFX which I loved and used in the game, several other developers have also allowed them to use their games and they are also getting free consoles, some have already received pre production models and are very pleased :). For info of the console look HERE, it's the only handheld that has an AMOLED touch screen which means you can use it in direct sunlight! It's primarily designed for open source and already has a huge community ready to back it up, you can see the forums HERE. Those forums are all about the GP32, GP2X, Pandora and Wiz open source handheld consoles. Okay, if you do have a game that you wrote (you must be the author) and would like to submit it, then please let me know. I will pass your details on to the contents sourcing guy in Game Park Holdings and he will get back to you. He's a very nice guy, and will answer all your questions too. So to sum up, if you have a Flash 7 Game that YOU wrote, and would like a free Wiz Console, then let me know, and if they like your game, you're in! Take care, Clare.
  12. In that case there's some fancy copy protection going on and you're out of luck. Soz, Clare.
  13. Okay what you need to do is to create an ISO image of the disc and use something like Daemon Tools or MagicISO to mount the ISO as a drive. Myself I have having to swap discs to play games so I use MagicISO or InfreRecorder to create the ISO image, then I use Daemon Tools to mount the image which is seen as a drive. One thing though, please make sure you own the game you're doing this to, we wouldn't want to break copywright laws here :P
  14. Save it all up for a rainy day. Throwing 50p into a group of tramps. The entertainment value at watching them fight over it is priceless. Confuse someone by sticking 5p to your forehead and then asking someone if they could loan you 5p. Glueing 5p's to some string makes some excellent bling! Play the OWCH game by throwing 5p directly up into the air in a crowded cinema. Chucking 1p at a high window to attract attention. Shock someone in a pub by using a 2p to make them think you're eating the glass, here's how: 1. You need a drink that has ice in it. 2. Conceal the 2p in your hand and arrange it so you can secretly snap it against the glass. 3. Take a drink but also drink a piece of ice, keep the ice in your mouth. 4. When someone looks at you, pretend to bite a piece out of the glass and at the same time snap the coin against it (CLINK). 5. Chew on the ice! It's really effective especially in lower light and when people are a bit tipsy!
  15. Nice avatar, I love cats. Excellent WC level too, you must be a master chopper! :D
  16. Go swimming, it's a great stress for stress relief!
  17. And they are my eyes too :) I did it for a possible idea for a startup animation for the up and coming Pandora console, you can see the actual idea HERE.
  18. I have used PHPBB a lot in the past, and still have two PHPBB forums running on my server. But I have now moved over to a content management system called Joomla which has a forum module available if I need it. I have messed with skins etc whenever I used PHPBB as I always wanted something a little different from any of the available skins. It's quite fun to be honest as I love CSS.
  19. You don't need to use VB Script, just a DOS batch file would do it. You could even use XCOPY to do an incremental backup of all your documents.
  20. What exactly is "Customs"? Can that be installed onto the network drive instead?
  21. HTML and Javascript is rendered on the actual browser so they cannot do what you need, also HTML is not capable of making random decisions. PHP is what is called a server side language, which means that the script is run on the web server and all your browser receives is the output from the PHP script. So the only thing the PHP page would return is the URL to the image, the code would go something like this: <?php $RNImage=rand(1,3); echo 'http://home.berzerk.co.uk/Images/'.$RNImage.'.jpg'; ?> And here's a quick explanation: $RNImage is a variable that contains a random number generated by the rand function. rand(1,3) selects a random number between 1 and 3. echo is what echoes information to your browser, and you can see I have placed $RNImage instead of the image name. This script will select a random image from 1.jpg, 2.jpg and 3.jpg. Addition: I have just realised this will not work on this forum, [garden tool] hum. Scrap all the above :(. If I can figure out a way to get it working I will let you know, but I'm not feeling well at the moment and am going back to bed so it won't be soon.
  22. It is very likely that a virus can be packaged in an Acrobat document. You can embed almost anything into a PDF. Although it is speculated that people using Acrobat Reader only and not Writer are immune as the code used to exploit embedded documents is not present in Acrobat reader. But those hacking type are clever folk, and nothing is 100% immune :(.
  23. Or you could convert the MP3s to WAVs using Audacity. That in my opinion would be the simplest option.
  24. Thrash you beat me too it lol, but here's my post anyway: It depends on the game and the method they use to write to the screen. Some games will take total control of your PC and there's no way to get back to the desktop unless you exit the game or press CTRL+ALT+DEL and kill the game using task manager. So unfortunately you cannot pause the game and get back to the desktop. The main reason is that games need as much of the PCs resources as possible and sharing CPU, Video RAM etc with other programs will mean a degradation in the games performance. You have one processor that has two cores built into it. Each core can work indipendantly and is almost like having two separate processors except they share much of the bandwidth on the bus. You don't have a 4GHz CPU but you have a CPU that can do two different things at the same time. Your graphics card has 256MB of memory specifically set aside for it, this means that the GPU can access this memory very quickly. The shared memory is allocated for system or graphics and the PC manages this depending on what is required. i.e. if your game suddenly requires more address space for textures, then it will be allowed to grab some of the system RAM, but this space is slower than the 256MB. That depends on the game, some games are written badly and you need a really powerful system to play it properly. While other games that have better graphics run more smoothly, and these games would be written with more skilled coders. I have two games that demonstrate this, 1. Halflife 2: This runs amazingly fast and has awesome graphics. 2. Gotcha: Graphics aren't that good but it feels sluggish and has slower frame rates. I have always found games by them Valve folk to be excellent quality and always runs fantastic, even on lower spec systems, and that's down to skilled and tight coding regardless of the system specification the game requires. As thrash-boy said, you may increase performance by lowering the resolution or turning off various aspects such as anti-aliasing. No, it would be too slow. Playing games off external media would be painfull. I use Avast, and found it to be excellent. My boyfriend used to use AVG but he's gone over to Avast now too. In theory no, but it may make boot times a little slower due to prefetching (Superfetch in Vista). I wrote a screen saver a few years ago that displays the time as a digital clock and has a choice of me saying the time every 15 mins, a chiming clock or silence. It also has a funny quote system that randomly displays quotes. It also allows you to add your own quotes. I can dig it up if you wish? One of the most useful things you could have is a backup method, now there are many free programs out there that do this for you, i.e. backing up to external media such as USB hard drive, but you don't really need these programs as you can do it all from within Windows using XCOPY in a batch file and Scheduled Tasks. The command line for XCOPY would be something like this: XCOPY "SOURCE\*.*" "DESTINATION\*.*" /D /E /C /I /F /H /R /Y SOURCE would be where the files are coming from, such as "C:\Users\Fred\My Documents\*.*" and the Destination would be where you want to back up the files to, such as "F:\Backup\My Documents\*.*". This backup method is incrimental so it will only backup files that are new or have changed and should be backed up to an external drive or network resource. If you want to know more about this I can give you hand. Bye for now, Clare.
