  1. Roman empire greek empire colonial england indian empire soviet russia ancient egypt ancient mesoptomia ancient israel That's a short list. We're approaching a problem we've never had before - a massive population and a demographic shift. The current way we live isn't sustainable - and there will be a lot that's going to change. I won't be alive 100 years from now, but I'll wager the world will be completely different, and our current society nothing but a distant memory.
  2. But see, that's just the tip of the iceberg. The world's population (particularly the west) is aging rapidly and within the next ten years the population distribution will no longer be sufficient to sustain the economic model we've been living off of for the last several decades. Our society in its current existence is incredibly new in terms of overall human history - all regimes and societies throughout history have failed eventually, I can't see why ours will be any different. Debt may be the catalyst.
  3. Good topic, nice detail  Debt has been a problem for a while, fueled by idiotic and naive politicians. I've no doubt that the world is headed for a massive economic change - and it'll look very different once we come out.
  4. Probably depends on the country. Not to sure exactly about Canadian laws but I've never heard of anyone even being charged for possession alone, unless it's intent to sell.
  5. Like Noxx said, that's normal to some degree. At your age there's no need to really worry about it, just live life and see how it goes. No need to stress about it.

Well, actually, the topic is about money - so that train of thought is relevant. But Croc, if you want to continue the discussion, you can make a new thread, I was thinking of creating a thread about government debt anyway.

Not true. To say they were somewhat to blame would be accurate, but America's debt problem owes its roots to many unwise governments. I believe you're thinking of Sarah Palin - the tea party movement existed long before she(bachmann) had any prominence.

Yes, and I'm asking for your source on that. "common knowledge" is not good enough. If you're going to imply causality like that you should be prepared to prove it.
  9. About 15k people are in jail for only possession of marijuana at any one time in the US. Yeah, about what I was expecting. I imagine many more are in there for dealing, trafficking, etc.

I don't understand why that sickens you? I do enjoy law, but I enjoy other areas more (history, music) but realistically I wouldn't be able to do much with them when I finish my study. While the money starting out in As I mentioned before, I lived in a very poor country where doctors got paid very little. Compared to the business-like structure of hospitals here in the US where doctors aim to prescribe the most expensive, non-generic medicines to get the most money, the doctors there were surprisingly caring, knowledgeable and dedicated to their work. You can't buy some traits. If I knew somebody who went to law school just for the money, I would never hire them because their primary motivation isn't to seek justice. How can you possibly claim to know all doctors prescribe the most expensive medicines possible just to get money?
  11. Agreed with Danq - it was still breaking the law. Plus, if it were to be legalized, probably only possession would be, not permission to grow (since they'd want you to buy it resale). I can't see there being too many people in jail just over possession.

Because she was one of the dumb [bleep]es who held up the Debt Ceiling debate for political gain. Or possibly because she was elected on a platform she would have had to break. I actually like when politicians try to keep their promises, even if their promises are stupid
  13. Looks fun, great job!

So all politicians are at fault, fair enough. Singling out one because you don't agree with them is unfair (not directed at you).

How on earth is Michele Bachmann possibly responsible for a recession?
  19. Don't tell them until they need to know? That said, a lot of people having confusing sexual feelings in their teens - you may change your mind again or start feeling differently. (not to say you're lying).
  20. Might be a problem with the CDN then if only some people are having the issue.
