One thing to bear in mind when looking at Canada's situation is the effect our proximity to the US has on illegal weapons entering the country.

I use both feet to drive. One for the clutch, the other for gas/brake :P

Yeah, I don't think 'most' domestic violence is done by women... Some happens and it is horribly underreported, but so is rape and sexual violence against women. I just think that the idea of men being the truly repressed gender is ridiculous. Look up "feminism and the disposable male" on youtube, some very interesting points made in that video on this topic.

No idea. But my issue with that argument is that someone who has decided to shoot up a school doesn't care about breaking a "no concealed weapon" law.

Juniors this year should be great. Goaltending is still going to be a weakness for Canada though...

It's more of a safeguard than anything. It's possible to have a reasonable, constructive policy debate after a tragedy, but it's considerably more likely for the arguments themselves to be insensitive (and more). Agreed completely. Take, for example, this blog post yesterday. It's an emotional plea to government representatives to do something about these events. It follows with four suggestions. Three I won't touch on, but this one struck me immediately when I read it yesterday: This is simply an emotional reaction to a problem that requires logical analysis. This suggestion is not logical, in fact it is fundamentally illogical. But this is the kind of thing that tugs at people's heartstrings so soon after a tragic event like this happens. That's why taking time to let the emotions subside is so important - because it allows you to avoid making illogical decisions based only off of emotional reactions.

What book are you currently reading?
Reading 1 nonfiction book a week for an entire year is the equivalent of earning a PhD in that field btw Assuming they are all in the same field of course :P I struggle with non-fiction. I'm still only 1/5th of the way through Origin of the Species.

I love it when every topic on here invariably devolves to religion-bashing every few weeks.

I think it's not entirely due to nationalism - it's partly proximity, and somewhat relateability.

Que the temporary gun control mania... Very sad. Hard to imagine what was going through the mind of the person (people) who were doing this...

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
See, I'm personally of the opinion that anyone who enjoys or makes a habit of sleeping with multiple women will never be happy in a marriage.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
Pretty sure there are no major legal differences between a "common law union" and a marriage...at least not here anyway.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
I think this works better in theory than in actual fact...I've yet to see any statistics that show pre-marital co-habitation decreases divorce rate.

I don't think that's always the case. It is most of the time...but not always.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
"I have dreams about you." And then wait for her to respond, don't say anything else. Breathe with your mouth slightly open. Don't blink. and be sure to stroke her arm gently while saying so, after all you have to touch to get out of the friendzone

One day, someone is going to get arrested for groping and blame it on the advice they got in this thread

What movie(s) did you last see?
The Bourne Legacy. In itself it was okay...plot was a bit disjointed but acting was pretty good and the action was as well. However, compared to the other bourne movies....it was very generic. I did like both the leads though. 6/10

Things that annoy the HELL out of you.
Everyone says this, about every site, every time. And in a few days they forget, and repeat the process the next time the layout changes. That's not true. I stopped complaining a while ago, but I still prefer both the youtube layout a couple times ago (before the layout that just changed) and the Facebook wall. I also really miss the way things looked on TIF back when it was a php board or whatever it was, though I recognize that the new system has some feature the other lacked. By "everyone", I don't literally mean "every single person", I mean people in general.

The Obligatory Ice Hockey Thread
I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm going to wait until the inevitable pre-season trade frenzy is over before making any standings predictions.
