The 'Official' "I think Religion/Agnosticism is bunk" thread
Well, I was born in a christian home. So you'd might be thinking I have been brainwashed. To some extent I think I have been, as I've been hearing a lot of christians talk since birth. On one hand I question if it's just because I was born a christian that I am one today. However, I do know both people who were born christian who aren't christian today and I also know people who weren't born christian who are christian today. I just think that the odds of becoming a christian are greater if you're exposed to a lot of christianity. That's of course just speculation. I haven't been taking my religion that seriosuly until the last few years though. But I've always believed in the back of my head that there is a God. Jesus says that it's better to be hot or cold than lukewarm. So I try to be not just christian on the outside but also on the inside. The Bible is fully correct since it's inspired by God. There are some parts of it I have trouble understanding. And sometimes I feel that God isn't always fair. But most often I hear a better interpretation of what I've read from a theologist who really has studied the Bible. And then it makes more sense. However, that's almost exclusively detalis that I'm confused about. The important meaning of the Bible, why we are here, were we're going, what Jesus has done and why he had to come and die for us is rather clear to me. But the whole thing makes no sense at all if you don't believe. It's most certainly the key to understanding the bible.

UEFA Champions League/Cup - Euro 2008 - Leagues & Cups
David Healy was brilliant. Especially his first goal which was beatiful. I think we underestimated Northen Ireland, we thought we had it the bag before the game had started. I'm disappointed in our play, Zlatan was terrible and the defence weren't really on its toes. Very nice job by NI though, they are a huge suprise so far. Who would've thought they would beat both Sweden and Spain. Incredible.

The Bible is sufficient for me to live my life by. That doesn't mean scientific discoveries are pointless. If science doesn't contradict the Bible I'm more then happy to believe in it. However, if I'm supposed to live by either the Bible or science aka man's speculation, my choice would be the Bible as I consider it to be the truth. Science can never be the truth, as it can change. It's a framework to explain some aspects of the world. It doesn't answer metaphysical question and that's why I consider philosophy to be more interesting. Philosophy is something everyone can discuss, whereas science requires observation and research, which is also the reason I'm not interested in a detailed evolutionary debate. Regarding your "if I was a theist view", I don't share your view. I do believe in hell, as it's pretty clear it's a reality if you read the Bible. However, even if we don't share our views we can still go to the pub. Though I'm not much of a drinker, so you'd be better off bringing someone else.

I believe the Bible is the truth. I don't know it but I have good reasons to believe it. I also have good reasons not to believe what you've just said. Your post sound to me like another example of man's speculation, which I'm not ready to live my life by. No, God really did tell me that. See? It's written right there. I'm gonna refer to my first post on this thread. Sidenote: Is this classified as spam?

Of course it's written by man. Though that doesn't make it man's speculation as they were inspired by God to write what he intended.

I consider the Bible to be the truth. Not man's speculation, that might or might not be true. It's not an option for me to live by some guys speculation, if it's not the truth I might aswell shred my Bible to pieces. Though I do agree that only God knows the whole story.

I think they would be able to understand. I mean if it's God's creation, why would he create a being that can't understand how they were made? So that he must tell a false version for them to put in a book, which is supposed to hold the truth. It doesn't make any sense to me. Again, there is nothing saying we won't lose our dominance, in the future, to some other random species. Or has evolution suddenly stopped since God decided that it would? Sure God could stop evolution, he can do anything. But it just seems like he had no original plan and just said: "Hey, those homo sapiens look pretty good, I'll make them the ruler of my creation."

If a person doesn't believe the Bible is true then I don't see any point in being a christian. So are you saying the Bible and evolution are compatible or incompatible?

Okay, I'm gonna change my mind. I actually do think that some beliefs are bunk. I don't believe that the Bible and Christianity are compatible with the evolution theory. The evolution theory says that humans are no more special than any other species. They might be the most prominent species at the moment, but there is no guarantee that we will always be nor have always been. Why would Jesus die for some random species who currently is at the top of the world? Why would humans be asked to rule all other species? Please enlighten me if I'm wrong.

I think you're right when you say that we understand life better when we fail. It's when I fail miserably I realise that I need Jesus. When things are seemingly going well, I tend to think that I deserve the salvation more than before, when it's actually the other way around. When you start to think that perhaps you're worthy of getting to heaven, you are worse than ever. Because then if you fall into sin, you're without hope as you've relied on your own ability to be worthy.

I was saying that from what I've heard, evolution might aswell be not proven or proven, as I've heard people saying both. But I'm not trying to discredit evolution from a scientific view, as I don't have the sufficient knowledge to do so.

The 'Official' "I think Religion/Agnosticism is bunk" thread
Looks like to me your not really in the position to be able to discredit evolution if you know little of it. I discredit it from a christian view, where the Bible is the truth and it contradicts the evolution theory.

It's happened in the past, in terms of time we're really not that special. Most of history was bacteria, millions of years was dinosaurs and we've been around for a few thousand really. It's entirely conceivable that we won't always be the dominant species (i.e. [bleep] Sapiens as we know it). If, there is a God, the chances of him being the Judeo-Christian God of the Bible are really very small. You saying "it's proven or it's not proven" doesn't make it valid for me. I'm not a scientist or whatever, but I've heard just as many people saying it's not proven as to it's proven. When talking about macro-evolution. What I've learned from this forum is people who says: Sorry to bring this up again. But it seems like the fossil-records aren't very convincing. I do like that you think that the story of Genesis contradicts evolution. I agree with that. I don't really want to participate in a detailed evolution debate due to my lack of knowledge on the subject.

I can't say that it's impossible for God to have used evolution (again macro). However, I have good reasons not to believe it. The theory of evolution pretty much says we're the same as other animals, just another species. God says we're the image of God and are meant to rule the earth. If the theory of evolution was true, some other species could in the future be the most prominent species on the earth.

There are many ways of saying something that is true. Just because it's written by man and man isn't perfect, doesn't mean God can't use man to write a book the way he intended . Don't limit God. This is the kind of reasoning I have trouble swallowing. You claim God used man to write a book the way he intended. Galilei, a devout Catholic, wrote a book in support of the heliocentric worldview of Copernicus. Yet, he was deemed a heretic by the clergy. How does one combine the two: on one hand saying the bible was written with Divine inspiration, but on the other hand dismissing a possible similar inspiration (which was proven right later on) as herecy ? Maybe God used Galilei to correct his original legacy ? Oh, but God is infallable ? The same basically goes for the evolution theory and Darwin. I'm stuck in a loop here, but to me it seems the followers of God do a good job in limiting God as well. The Bible itself doesn't teach a geocentric model. Galilei proved that the Bible had been misinterpreted. If science doesn't correspond with the Bible, it's either a misinterpretation of the Bible or that the scientific theory is wrong. You don't need divinie inspiration to figure out that the earth is not the centre of the universe. Galilei didn't correct the Bible, he corrected people misinterpreting the Bible.

I will refer to the simpsons episode I watched yesterday. Professor Frink is asked: "So does this theory of evolution necessarily mean that there is no God?" He replies: "Of course not. It just says that God is an impotent nothing from nowhere with less power than the Under Secretary of Agriculture, who has very little power in our system". These verses (or rather the whole creation story) doesn't make any sense to me if we evolved from other species: Genesis 1: Maybe I missed your point but to me God must correspond with the Bible as I believe it's his words. Sidenote: I do care to some extent what other people think of me (I think everyone does), however I do not let that stop me from expressing what I believe in. Kind of like the saying: "I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not."

The people around you can change, die, abandon you etc. Sure I love the people around me and I do rely on them to some extent. But God is unchanging and is the only one I can truely, always, no matter what, rely on. Maybe it sounds like I'm reading out of a Bible since it's my source of truth. I know it annoys people but as I've said before, I'd rather you listen to the Bible than what I have to say. There are many ways of saying something that is true. Just because it's written by man and man isn't perfect, doesn't mean God can't use man to write a book the way he intended . Don't limit God. I'd still say if the christian God exists he didn't use evolution (I'm refering to macro-evolution). Adam and Eve are both guilty of eating the forbidden fruit. I don't think I've ever heard the question: Are we punished for Eve's sin? It's always Adam's sin.

If I made someone laugh, then at least I did something good. I'd rather look like a fool and try to express what I believe in, than shut up and worry about what other people think of me.

The 'Official' "I think Religion/Agnosticism is bunk" thread
I don't think that any honest person's beliefs are bunk, whether it's believing there is a God or believing in science or whatever. However, I do believe I have found the truth in God. Reading the Bible and listening to what Jesus has done, is what really moves me and touches my heart. That is probably the main reason I believe. But also, when I look at the world and all the beatiful places and people, I feel it must have been created by someone. And when I'm around christians and talk about God, I feel this great connection as if we were experiencing the same thing. Of course you might say I'm deluded. But God makes me happy, he is the only one who never let's me down. The only one I can truely rely on. And the only one who can save my soul. If I were to rely on people like myself I would be without hope. What I've discovered is that I love sin. Sure I hate the fact that I love sin, but it's still rather disturbing. Heaven is perfect and I would love to be there today, but I'm not there and I can't sit around and do nothing as it's not God's will. I don't believe in telling people they will go Hell either, it's up to God to decide everyone's fate. I can't look into people's hearts like God can. Then who am I to judge anyone? I just wish everyone would believe in God, but I know people who claim they've seeked God and not found him. Why that is I can't tell, only advice is probably not to give up. What I don't like is compromising. Like God used evolution to create man. Or the Bible has some good points but is mostly myths. You can't just take what you like and disregard the rest. If something is the truth, it's the truth regardless to if it's not modern or fits into the society. Of course you should always question if it's possible that we have misinterpreted the Bible. But more often than not it's pretty obvious what's being said.

another way to look at life... ?
It was "a belief", not "an idea". Eh, close enough :-w . What if I love Jesus and want to live (or die) for him? Is it stupidity because I would die for my beliefs, or is it just right since I want to live/die for someone I love?
